The best Palworld 1.0 settings are not one universal preset. Start by editing the active platform file—Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini on Windows or Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini on Linux—then choose progression, death, access, capacity, backup, and administration values around the way your group actually plays. Keep custom rates under Difficulty=None, preserve the single-line OptionSettings=(...) syntax, and restart the server after every change.
What “best” means for a Palworld 1.0 server
A cooperative server for a small group should not use the same rules as a public PvP world. Palworld exposes separate controls for experience, capture chance, gathering, work speed, egg hatching, day length, night length, death penalties, player damage, base defenses, access, crossplay, backups, and remote administration. Treat each as a policy decision rather than searching for a magic preset.

Pocketpair’s official configuration documentation is identified as version 1.0.4 and explains the file workflow and parameters. A current 1.0 settings reference reports official file data from patch 1.0.3, build 24575149. Settings added or changed by a patch should therefore be checked against the build actually installed on your server.
The practical rule is simple: decide the experience you want, change only the relevant variables, record the original values, and test with a small group before opening the world publicly.

Find the live configuration file
Windows dedicated server
After the server has launched once, open:
Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini
Linux dedicated server
On Linux, use:
Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini
The directories are created when the server starts. If you cannot see them, launch the server once, stop it cleanly, and check again.

- Locate
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniin the server installation. - Copy its contents into the platform-specific
PalWorldSettings.inipath above. - Edit the active file, not the default template.
- Save a dated backup of the working file before changing values.
- Restart the server so the world reads the new configuration during loading.

Preserve the OptionSettings syntax
The active file uses one OptionSettings=(...) block. In the current 1.0 workflow, options are kept on one continuous line and separated by commas. Do not turn the block into independent lines, remove parentheses, replace commas with semicolons, or leave an extra comma in the wrong place.
A safe editing sequence is:
- Make a copy of the file before touching it.
- Search for the exact parameter name, such as
ExpRateorDeathPenalty. - Change only the value after the equals sign.
- Leave unrelated parameters and punctuation unchanged.
- Save, restart, and inspect the server log for a normal world load.
If the server fails to load after an edit, restore the last working backup first. A missing comma or malformed value can be harder to diagnose than a gameplay choice, so change one group of related settings at a time.
Choose progression and pacing settings
Progression is best tuned as a group. The official parameter list separates the following levers:
- Experience gain.
- Capture chance.
- Resource and item gathering yields.
- Work speed.
- Egg-hatching time.
- Day and night speed.
Many of these rates use 1.0 as the reference default in the 1.0 data. A value above the reference accelerates the corresponding activity; a value below it slows that activity. The sources do not establish one universally correct accelerated value, so choose a number your group can explain and revise it after observing real play.

Vanilla-style progression
Keep the relevant rates at their defaults when you want the intended pacing, longer-term crafting goals, and meaningful resource routes. This is the least surprising option for players joining from another server.
Accelerated cooperative progression
Increase only the bottlenecks your group dislikes. For example, a community with limited evening time might raise experience, gathering, work speed, or egg hatching while leaving capture chance and combat rules near their normal pacing. Changing every rate at once removes the distinction between exploration, production, and achievement.
Short-session or event worlds
For a temporary world, faster experience, gathering, work, and hatching can make the event reachable without changing the permanent server’s economy. Tell players that these are event rules before they invest time in breeding or building.
Day and night balance
Day and night rates are independent controls. Faster nights can reduce downtime for a group that mainly plays after work, but they also shorten the window for activities that depend on daylight. Adjust one cycle at a time and tell players the intended rhythm.
Do not combine custom rates blindly with Difficulty
The 1.0 reference warns that selecting a Difficulty preset rewrites the individual values covered by that preset. If you are deliberately choosing custom rates, leave Difficulty=None so the preset does not overwrite them. A preset is appropriate when you want its bundled rules; custom tuning is appropriate when you want control over each rate.
Set death, combat, and world policy before opening the server
These settings affect trust more than almost any gathering multiplier. Publish them in your server rules and repeat them in the welcome message.

Forgiving cooperative rules
Use no-drop or limited-drop death rules when the priority is exploration and building with friends. This reduces recovery chores and makes the server easier for occasional players to rejoin.

Punishing survival rules
Carried-item, equipment, Pal-loss, hardcore, or permanent-death rules create tension, but they also magnify disconnects, mistakes, and inexperienced play. Combine them only when the community explicitly wants that risk.
PvP rules
Set the PvP policy, player damage, and base-defense behavior as one package. A server that advertises PvE but permits unexpected player damage will lose players even if every other setting is well tuned.
Configure name, password, authentication, and crossplay
Access settings determine who can find the world and which devices can join it.

Allowing client mods can effectively restrict access to Steam players because console clients cannot run those mods. If your community includes console users, decide whether a modded experience is worth excluding them and state the answer in the server description.

Choose player and base capacity without promising unsupported performance
Player capacity is not an isolated number. More concurrent players increase world activity, networking, construction, and entity processing. The same applies to base counts, Pals per base, workers per base, physics-active dropped items, building limits, and replication distance.
- Raise the player cap only after observing the current server under its normal peak load.
- Increase bases per guild cautiously; Pocketpair explicitly warns that this raises processing load.
- Increase workers per base cautiously for the same reason.
- Limit physics-active dropped items when clutter and simulation become a problem.
- Review building limits and replication distance when large settlements or distant activity cause load spikes.
No source establishes a hardware-independent player number that will run well. A cap that works on one machine can fail on another because CPU, memory, storage, network conditions, world age, and construction density differ. Treat capacity changes as an operational test, not a guarantee.
Backups: enable protection and understand the disk workload
bIsUseBackupSaveData enables world backup saves. Pocketpair notes that this increases disk load, so enable it when the value of recovery is greater than the additional write activity.

These figures describe the documented backup cadence, not a performance benchmark. Keep enough free disk space for the retention behavior you intend, and include the save directory in your normal backup plan if the world matters.
Remote administration: AdminPassword, RCON, and REST
AdminPassword
AdminPassword grants administrative privileges. Use a unique secret, limit who receives it, and change it when an administrator leaves the project.
RCON
RCON has an enable flag and a port. The 1.0 reference lists it as disabled by default. Enable it only when you have a specific administration tool or workflow that requires it, and protect the port with the network controls available on your host.
REST API
The REST API also has an enable flag and port and is disabled by default in the 1.0 reference. An API exposed to an untrusted network expands the attack surface; keep it off when you do not need programmatic administration.

The setting bAllowEnemyCampSpawnNearBaseCamp arrived in patch 1.0.3 and defaults to false in the current 1.0 reference. Enabling it permits enemy camps near player bases, changing the security assumptions of established settlements.
Because this option is patch-sensitive, verify that the installed server build supports it before adding it to a shared configuration. Apply the same check to any setting introduced in a later patch: compare the build, parameter spelling, and documented default rather than copying a line from an unrelated version.

Practical configuration profiles
These profiles show how to make decisions without pretending that one numeric preset is best for every group.
Long-term vanilla PvE
- Keep progression, gathering, work, hatching, and day/night rates at their reference defaults.
- Use
Difficulty=Noneif you are not selecting a bundled preset. - Choose no-drop or limited-drop death rules.
- Use a password for a private group or a clear description for a public community.
- Enable backups and leave RCON and REST disabled unless administration requires them.
Fast cooperative progression
- Raise only the rates that address your group’s time constraints.
- Keep the PvE and death policy forgiving enough that faster progression does not become a grind-recovery loop.
- Document every non-default rate so new players know what the economy means.
- Watch storage and CPU load if increased activity leads to larger bases or more active entities.
Organized PvP
- Publish player-damage, base-defense, and death-drop rules together.
- Use a password or authentication process during testing and tournaments.
- Set a capacity that your hardware has already handled under peak activity.
- Keep remote interfaces off unless a named administrator needs them and the ports are protected.
Hardcore campaign
- Explain hardcore character death and permanent Pal loss before players create characters.
- Use a written recovery and restart policy so a crash is not confused with an intentional death rule.
- Keep a tested backup path even when the game’s rules are intentionally unforgiving.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the platform-specific file, operating system, firewall, storage, and restart schedule. It also makes you responsible for updates, disk health, backups, passwords, and troubleshooting.
Managed hosting can reduce routine server administration, but you still need to know where the provider exposes PalWorldSettings.ini, how it handles restarts, which build it runs, and how to retrieve backups. The settings decisions in this guide remain the same; only the operational layer changes. Do not choose a host on a promised player count without matching that claim to your actual world, mod, and base workload.
Troubleshoot changes that do not apply
The server ignores your edits
- Confirm you edited
PalWorldSettings.iniin the active WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory. - Check that you did not edit only
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Verify the parameter spelling and comma-separated
OptionSettingssyntax. - Stop and restart the server; changing a file while the world is running may not reload it.
Custom rates revert unexpectedly
Check Difficulty. A selected preset can rewrite covered values. Set it to None when individual custom rates are intended.
Some players cannot connect
- Check the player cap and password.
- Confirm the intended platform appears in
CrossplayPlatforms. - Review whether client mods are excluding console players.
- Ensure the server build and client versions are compatible.
Performance worsens after expansion
- Compare the timing with changes to player cap, bases per guild, workers per base, dropped-item physics, building limits, and replication distance.
- Check disk activity if backups were enabled.
- Reduce the newest change first, then observe the server during peak activity.
Pre-launch checklist
- Start the server once so the platform-specific directories exist.
- Copy the default configuration into the active
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Back up the file and world saves.
- Set the name, description, password, authentication, player cap, and crossplay policy.
- Choose progression and day/night rates, leaving
Difficulty=Nonefor custom tuning. - Publish PvE/PvP, damage, death-penalty, hardcore, and Pal-loss rules.
- Decide whether enemy camps near bases are allowed and verify patch compatibility.
- Enable backups if the disk workload is acceptable.
- Leave RCON and REST disabled unless you have a protected administration plan.
- Restart, connect from every target platform, and test a normal player session.
- Record the working file so future changes can be reversed.
