Panthalus and Jormuntide are the best starting picks for Water-type combat in Palworld: both rank among the leaders in two consulted third-party evaluations. Shaolong and Neptilius are also strong contenders, but each leads a different evaluation. There is no official universal tier list, and the order depends on how skills, stats, matchups, and build investment are weighed.
Best Water Pals for combat at a glance
| Pal | Recommended placement | Why it stands out | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panthalus | S-tier contender | Appears among the leading Water combat choices in both consulted rankings; described as durable and capable of powerful Water attacks. | Its exact position relative to Jormuntide depends on the ranking method. |
| Jormuntide | S-tier contender | Appears among the leaders in both rankings; combines strong melee offense with the Lord of the Sea passive, which increases Water damage. | Check the opponent’s element and Jormuntide’s skills before treating it as a universal pick. |
| Shaolong | S-tier alternative | The Palworld Database guide calls it its best Water Pal and points to its shot attack, durability, and exclusive Celestial Vortex. | Its Watering suitability is base utility, not evidence of combat strength. |
| Neptilius | S-tier in one scoring model | FarmFriends places it in S tier in its level-50 comparison. | This is model-dependent, not a cross-source consensus. |
These are practical recommendations, not an official or definitive order. Palworld Database counted 47 Water-type Pals among 288 in its 2026 guide; that is the guide’s dataset count, not an independently verified official total. Its guide-style evaluation and FarmFriends’ numerical model assess Pals differently.
Why the rankings disagree
FarmFriends compares Pals at a fixed reference level of 50, with neutral IVs, no Condenser, and no Souls. Its published score weights offense, durability, and skill-element coverage at 55/30/15. It also says the score does not include elemental matchup advantage. Those choices make the list a useful controlled comparison, but not a ranking of fully invested endgame builds or performance in every fight.
The Palworld Database guide uses a more qualitative guide-style evaluation, discussing stats, skills, and practical utility. It names Shaolong its best Water Pal, while FarmFriends’ model places Neptilius in S tier. Neither result cancels out the shared support for Panthalus and Jormuntide; they reflect different criteria. FarmFriends also leaves two Pals unranked because it lacks scoreable skill data, so the available evidence does not justify assigning every Water Pal a confident S-to-D tier.

How to choose a Water Pal for your fight
Match the target before comparing raw tiers
Water is effective against Fire, but Electric and Grass counter Water. A high tier is not a safe choice for every battle: check the opponent’s element and any secondary typing before committing. The tier model’s score does not include that matchup advantage, so its placement alone cannot answer which Pal is best against a particular enemy.
Look at the damage pattern and usable skills
Separate melee offense from ranged offense rather than treating “attack” as one interchangeable number. A Pal’s attacks and the skills it actually uses matter alongside its base stats. Jormuntide’s appeal includes melee offense and the Lord of the Sea Water-damage passive; Shaolong’s cited strengths include its shot attack and Celestial Vortex. Do not assume that a skill or stat discussion proves equal performance across every build.

Weigh survivability alongside damage
Consider HP and defense as well as attack. Panthalus is described as notably durable, while the FarmFriends model explicitly gives durability a 30% share of its score. That weighting is a feature of FarmFriends’ method, not an in-game stat or a rule that every player must use.
Separate a reference build from an invested Pal
FarmFriends’ neutral level-50 setup is not an endgame build with Condensing, Souls, IVs, chosen passives, and player-selected skills. If your Pal has substantial investment or a customized moveset, treat the reference ranking as a baseline rather than a prediction of its exact performance.
Keep base usefulness in its own column
Shaolong’s high Watering suitability can make it useful around a base, but that is a separate reason to keep one; it should not raise its combat rank by itself.

Palworld v1.0.4 reportedly changed summoned and base Pals to prioritize skills expected to deal higher damage. The exact line, “Adjusted summoned Pals and Base Pals to prioritize skills expected to deal higher damage,” appears in a notice reproduced in a 2026 community post, rather than a directly opened Pocketpair patch page. Because skill selection affects combat behavior, treat tier advice as version-sensitive and revisit it after balance or AI changes.
