Pals in the team still provide passive gliding buffs. Pocketpair said the change was a compromise made amid its ongoing patent litigation with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.
What changed in Palworld’s gliding system?
In its May 8, 2025 statement about Patch v0.5.5, Pocketpair said: “From this patch onward, gliding will be performed using a glider rather than with Pals.” Players must have a glider in their inventory to glide. Pals in the team continue to give passive gliding buffs, but no longer serve as the gliding mount.
That distinction matters: the update changed the method, not the existence of gliding. Pocketpair described the remaining team benefit this way: “Pals in the player’s team will still provide passive buffs to gliding, but players will now need to have a glider in their inventory in order to glide.” Pocketpair’s Patch v0.5.5 statement does not specify the strength of those buffs.
Why did Pocketpair change Pal gliding?
Pocketpair explicitly connected the change to its ongoing patent litigation with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. The company called its gameplay changes a compromise intended to avoid further disruption to Palworld’s development while the case continued. That is Pocketpair’s explanation; it does not establish that a court ordered the gliding change.

The May 2025 statement also said: “We continue to dispute these claims and assert the invalidity of the patents in question.” That is Pocketpair’s position in the dispute, not a judicial finding that the patents are invalid.
What is the Nintendo lawsuit about?
Nintendo said it and The Pokémon Company filed a patent-infringement suit against Pocketpair in Tokyo District Court on September 18, 2024, and announced the filing the following day. Nintendo said the plaintiffs sought an injunction and damages. Those are allegations and requested remedies, not a ruling that Pocketpair infringed a patent. Nintendo’s announcement describes the filing.
In its account of the complaint, Pocketpair identified Japanese Patent Nos. 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390. Pocketpair summarized the plaintiffs’ damages request as ¥5 million for each plaintiff—The Pokémon Company and Nintendo—plus late-payment damages, as well as an injunction against Palworld. These amounts are Pocketpair’s description of the requested relief; they are not damages awarded by a court. Pocketpair’s November 2024 report gives its account of the asserted patents and claims.
Palworld had already changed another mechanic
Pal gliding was not the first mechanic Pocketpair associated with the litigation. Patch v0.3.11, released November 30, 2024, removed the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres and replaced it with a static summon next to the player. Pocketpair said that other mechanics changed in the same patch as well. The company later described the v0.5.5 gliding change as another compromise during the proceedings.

What is known about the case’s current status?
A legal analysis published July 27, 2026, reported that the case remained pending, that the claims had been narrowed to earlier, pre-patch versions of Palworld, and that an evidence session was scheduled for October 1, 2026. It also said a court indication was expected November 9, 2026. The October session date has passed, but that July report does not establish what happened at the session or the court’s status now. No post-session outcome is confirmed here, so the case should not be described as resolved. Patent Arcade’s July 2026 analysis is the source for that reported schedule and procedural account.
