The “animal cruelty” debate is about how Palworld’s fictional creatures, called Pals, are treated in its gameplay and presentation. The “Pokémon plagiarism” debate is about perceived similarities between Palworld and Pokémon. They are separate criticisms, and neither proves the other. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s lawsuit was announced as a patent-infringement case—not a court judgment that Palworld copied Pokémon creature designs. The available party statements and reporting do not establish a final court decision or the case’s status as of October 2026.
What do the two debates mean?
| Debate | What people are criticizing | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| “Animal cruelty” | A moral criticism of the fictional treatment of Pals in Palworld’s gameplay and presentation. | It is not evidence of real-world animal abuse. The available sources do not document specific gameplay examples in enough detail to describe them reliably here. |
| “Pokémon plagiarism” | A claim or reaction that Palworld resembles Pokémon, especially in creature designs or game mechanics. | It is not a legal finding. The official lawsuit announcement describes a patent-infringement action, not a court ruling that Palworld plagiarized Pokémon creature designs. |
These labels are public framings of different concerns, not interchangeable descriptions of one controversy. A reaction to how fictional creatures are treated does not demonstrate copying; perceived resemblance does not prove anything about the treatment of Pals.
What did Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sue over?
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company said they filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in Tokyo District Court on September 18, 2024. Their September 19 announcement said they were seeking an injunction and damages. That describes the plaintiffs’ claims and requested relief, not a court finding that infringement occurred. Nintendo’s announcement.
In a November 8, 2024 report, Pocketpair said the plaintiffs asserted three patents: 7545191, registered August 27, 2024; 7493117, registered May 22, 2024; and 7528390, registered July 26, 2024. Pocketpair said the plaintiffs sought an injunction and 5 million yen from each defendant plaintiff—5 million yen for each plaintiff—plus late-payment damages. This is Pocketpair’s account of the plaintiffs’ asserted patents and requested damages; it is not an award or a judgment. Pocketpair’s report.

The distinction matters because “plagiarism” is often used loosely in discussion of perceived similarities, while the case materials cited here describe a patent-infringement action. They do not establish that a court ruled Palworld copied Pokémon creature designs, nor do they establish a copyright judgment.
What later developments are relevant—and what do they prove?
A related patent application was rejected
PC Gamer reported on October 31, 2025, that the Japan Patent Office rejected a related pending application, JP 2024-031879, for lack of an inventive step. The report characterized the rejection as non-final and said the application was not directly relevant to the patents asserted in the Palworld lawsuit. It therefore does not resolve that case. The parties disputed what could count as prior art
GamesRadar reported on September 17, 2025, that Pocketpair cited mechanics from earlier games, including a Dark Souls 3 mod, as prior-art examples, while Nintendo argued that mods could not count as prior art. The report did not establish a court decision on that dispute. GamesRadar’s report.
Neither report supplies a final outcome for the lawsuit. The latest primary party update cited here is Pocketpair’s November 8, 2024 report; it is not a current docket record. The case’s status as of October 2026 is not established by these sources, so it would be inaccurate to call it ongoing, settled, won, or lost on this basis.

How should the controversy be described?
- Describe “animal cruelty” as criticism of fictional gameplay and presentation, not as a finding of real-world abuse.
- Describe “Pokémon plagiarism” as a public allegation or resemblance debate, not a proven legal conclusion.
- Call the lawsuit a patent-infringement action and attribute the claims and requested relief to the parties that reported them.
- Do not treat the related patent-application rejection or the prior-art dispute as a decision in the lawsuit.
Specific Palworld–Pokémon creature pairs are not established by the cited material, so naming examples would go beyond what it supports. The defensible distinction is between criticism of fictional treatment, arguments about resemblance, and the narrower legal claims actually described in the case announcements.
