Each action game’s timing, eligible attacks, stamina rules, equipment and punish windows determine the right choice.
Parry and dodge solve different problems
What a parry is for
A parry is a timing-dependent defensive input. You attempt it shortly before an incoming strike connects, using the game’s deflection mechanic rather than simply moving away. A successful parry may do more than prevent damage: it can inflict posture or stance damage, stagger an enemy, or create a guaranteed-looking opening for a counterattack or critical hit. Those rewards are why parries can be powerful, but they also make the decision demanding. The timing must be learned for the particular game, and the attack must be eligible for deflection.

In Elden Ring, the official online manual says that successfully parrying an enemy attack can break its stance and create an opportunity for a critical hit. The same manual cautions that one parry does not break the stance of every enemy. Treat the critical opening as a game rule to verify against the enemy in front of you, not as a promise that every parry produces an immediate riposte.
What a dodge is for
A dodge is an evasion action. It changes your position so the attack misses rather than trying to interrupt or redirect the blow. FromSoftware’s Elden Ring manual describes rolling as useful when you want to evade enemy attacks. Depending on the game, a dodge may also move you around the attacker, out of weapon range or toward a safer angle; those follow-up benefits must be learned from that game’s movement system.

Dodging usually asks a simpler question: can you recognize the attack and move at the appropriate time? It does not automatically create a punish window, and it may consume stamina, place you farther from the target or leave you facing the wrong direction. Its value is dependable damage avoidance when a parry would be too risky or unavailable.
The decision in one glance
| Question | Favor a parry when… | Favor a dodge when… |
|---|---|---|
| What is the reward? | A successful deflection produces posture or stance damage, a stagger, a critical-hit opening or another meaningful punish. | The main objective is to avoid the hit; no special counterattack is required. |
| Can you read the attack? | The wind-up, sound or animation gives you a repeatable cue and you know the timing. | The attack is ambiguous, delayed, multi-hit or too fast for your current reaction. |
| Is the move eligible? | The game’s rules identify this attack as parryable. | The attack is unlisted, unblockable, ranged, unusually large or otherwise signaled as an evasion check. |
| What happens if you miss? | You have confirmed that an early or late input has an acceptable cost and you can recover. | A mistimed parry would expose you to a severe hit, while a roll offers a safer escape. |
| Where do you need to be next? | The parry leaves you close enough and safe enough to perform the counter. | Moving around or away from the enemy is more valuable than standing in its attack lane. |
| What resources are available? | Your shield, guard resource or equivalent mechanic is equipped and you have enough stamina or energy for the attempt. | Your movement resource is available and the dodge can be repeated without exhausting you. |
| How consistent is your execution? | You can reproduce the timing under pressure. | Your parry success is still inconsistent, so reliable evasion protects more health. |
This table is a decision framework, not a universal ranking. A game can make a particular attack parryable but still make dodging the better answer because of distance, follow-up attacks or the cost of failure.
When a parry is the better choice
The attack has a stable, readable cue
Choose parry when the opponent’s animation, audio cue or weapon motion gives you a timing you can recognize repeatedly. Practice against one move at a time: identify the moment the hit would land, then press the guard or deflect input according to the game’s instructions. Do not transfer a timing learned from one enemy, weapon or game to another without checking how its rules differ.

The game pays you for taking the risk
A parry is worth attempting when the reward changes the exchange. Posture damage, a stagger or a critical-hit opportunity can shorten a fight or stop an otherwise dangerous sequence. If a successful parry merely avoids damage while a missed input causes a full hit, a dodge may offer the better expected result for a player who is not yet consistent.
You know the move is parryable
Attack eligibility is a hard gate. Some games distinguish ordinary melee strikes from attacks that cannot be deflected; others allow a parry only with a particular shield, weapon or skill. Confirm the rule through the game’s manual, tutorial or observed behavior before building your strategy around it. Never assume that a human-sized animation, a red flash or a familiar sound guarantees parry eligibility.
You can exploit the opening
A successful deflection is most valuable when you are positioned to use the resulting opening. Keep enough distance to avoid being clipped by the attack, but remain close enough for the game’s critical, heavy or posture-damaging follow-up. If the enemy is near a hazard, another target or a second attacker’s range, the theoretical reward may not be safe to collect; in that situation, evading can preserve your position and health.

When a dodge is the better choice
The attack is not a good parry target
Use evasion for attacks that the game marks as unparryable or that the mechanics clearly treat as movement checks. Long-range projectiles, area attacks, grabs, exceptionally large strikes and multi-stage patterns are common examples in action games, but the exact list is game-specific. Follow the game’s own cues rather than assuming a genre convention.

The timing is uncertain
When an enemy delays a swing, changes its rhythm or hides the impact point, a parry attempt becomes a guess. A dodge lets you respond to the attack’s approach while preserving the option to reposition. This is particularly useful while learning a boss: first survive the pattern, then test whether an individual hit can be deflected.
You need to leave the attack’s space
Some threats cover a cone, line or circle rather than a single point. If remaining in that space would expose you to a second hit, roll or step away even if the first impact might technically be parryable. Evasion can also place you behind an enemy or outside the range of a follow-up; whether that happens depends on the game’s movement and camera rules.
Your parry is not dependable yet
High reward does not compensate for repeated misses. Until your timing is reliable, use the defense that keeps you alive long enough to learn. You can deliberately practice parries during low-risk attacks, but do not substitute an experimental input for an emergency escape when a defeat would cost a run, resource or checkpoint.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Identify the threat. Decide whether the incoming move is a single strike, a chain, a grab, a projectile or an area effect. The category narrows the possible defenses but does not determine the answer by itself.
- Check the game’s rule. Confirm whether that move can be parried and which input, shield, weapon or skill performs the deflection. If the game provides no confirmation, treat the move as unverified rather than assuming it is eligible.
- Read the cue. Watch the release and impact timing, not just the beginning of the wind-up. A long animation can contain a late hit, and a fast-looking animation can pause before contact.
- Estimate the consequence of failure. Consider health, posture, stamina, nearby enemies and the possibility of a follow-up. A parry is sensible only when you can absorb or recover from a mistake, or when the potential reward justifies the danger.
- Choose the position you need after contact. If you must remain close for a critical attack, parry may be appropriate. If you need distance, an angle or cover, dodge toward that destination.
- Review the result. After the exchange, note whether the input was early, late, out of range or applied to an ineligible attack. Change one variable at a time on the next attempt so you learn the rule instead of merely repeating the failure.

What the official guidance establishes
Bandai Namco’s combat guide presents enemy openings as a central part of combat and explains that movement and blocking consume stamina. It distinguishes shield roles: greatshields are best for blocking because they generally offer high damage negation and higher guard boost; small shields are best for parrying and can block in an emergency; medium shields are all-rounders with decent damage mitigation and the ability to parry. These recommendations describe Elden Ring, not every action game.

FromSoftware’s online manual states, “Rolling is also useful when you want to evade enemy attacks.” It also explains, “If you successfully parry an enemy’s attack, you can break their stance, creating an opportunity for a critical hit.” The manual adds that some enemies do not lose their stance from one parry. Together, these instructions show that rolling and parrying have different jobs: rolling is explicitly an evasion tool, while a successful parry can convert defense into an offensive opening.
How to apply that distinction
- Use a small shield when your plan is to seek parries, while remembering that its emergency blocking ability is limited compared with a shield chosen primarily for blocking.
- Choose a medium shield when you want a compromise between mitigation and the ability to parry.
- Choose a greatshield when blocking and damage negation are more important than attempting frequent parries.
- Before committing to a parry, verify that the enemy’s particular melee attack can be deflected and that one successful parry is enough to create the opening you need.
- Watch stamina: movement, blocking and repeated defensive inputs compete for the same resource, so an exhausted character may be unable to roll or guard after a failed attempt.
- Roll when the attack’s range, timing or eligibility makes a deflection unsafe, especially when you need to leave the attack’s area rather than stand in front of the enemy.
The guide does not establish a universal parry timing, success rate or list of all parryable attacks. Do not import a frame count or a rule from another weapon, enemy or game into Elden Ring without evidence for that specific case.
Game-specific example: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Deflection is tied to posture
Activision’s mechanics guide identifies attacking and deflecting as the main ways to break an enemy’s posture. Its instruction is to press the guard button “the moment before a blow lands.” That wording is the timing rule supplied for Sekiro; it is not a general timing formula for other action games.
Recommended Free Tools
This design places deflection near the center of combat. Rather than treating every successful defense as a retreat, you can use a precisely timed guard to pressure posture and create a path to a finishing attack. The correct response still depends on the incoming move and your ability to repeat the timing under pressure.
When evasion still matters
The same guide names step dodge as a safety-roll option if the player is downed or posture-broken. That exception is important: a game built around deflection still needs an escape when your posture or position has collapsed. Use the dodge to recover space and reset the exchange, then return to deflection when you can read the next blow. Sekiro therefore illustrates why “parry-focused” does not mean “never dodge.”
Equipment, resources and positioning
Equipment changes the opportunity cost
A defense is not independent of your loadout. A shield or weapon may provide the parry skill, alter the timing, or offer different blocking performance. Another item may improve your ability to absorb a mistake but remove access to the deflection you wanted. Compare the actual tooltips and in-game rules for your current equipment rather than relying on a broad genre description.

Stamina and equivalent resources
Many games charge a resource for movement, guarding or both. Elden Ring’s official guidance specifically discusses stamina costs for movement and blocking. Entering an attack with too little resource can turn a correct read into a failed escape, so reserve enough for the defense and the immediate follow-up. If the game has no stamina system, look for its equivalent: charges, cooldowns, posture, durability or a limited number of evasive actions.
Distance determines the value of success
A parry performed too far away may not connect with the attack or may leave you outside the counter range. A dodge performed directly into a wall, ledge or second enemy may avoid the first hit while creating a worse position. Before choosing, identify where the enemy and camera will leave you after the animation ends.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practice without reinforcing bad habits
Start with one attack
Choose a repeatable, low-risk strike and observe it without attacking. Record the visual or audio cue that precedes contact, then attempt the parry at the game’s stated timing. If you miss, label the error: early, late, out of range or wrong target. Changing the input, distance and target at the same time makes the lesson unclear.
Separate survival practice from timing practice
During a difficult encounter, dodge until you understand the pattern. Once survival is stable, devote a few attempts to one parryable move. This keeps experimentation from consuming the attempt you needed to learn the boss’s broader sequence.
Confirm the reward
After a successful parry, check what actually changed: posture, stance, stagger, damage, position or access to a critical attack. If no meaningful opening appears, the defense may still be useful, but it should not be evaluated as though it provides a reward the game does not grant.
Troubleshooting common failures
“I press parry and still get hit.”
First check eligibility and distance. If the move is parryable, compare your input with the game’s impact cue rather than the start of the animation. A late input may be safer to diagnose than repeatedly pressing earlier at random. Also verify that the correct shield, weapon or skill is equipped and active.

“The parry works, but I cannot capitalize.”
Look at your position, stamina and follow-up input. You may be outside critical range, facing away after the animation or too depleted to perform the punish. In that case, either begin the exchange closer, reserve the required resource or choose a dodge that places you where the next attack can be answered.
“Dodging avoids the first hit but I am struck by the next one.”
Do not treat every roll as a complete solution. Observe whether the attack is a chain or area pattern and choose a destination that leaves the danger zone. A shorter step, a roll around the enemy or a longer retreat may be appropriate depending on the game’s movement rules.
“I can parry regular enemies but not the boss.”
Bosses may use different eligibility rules, timing, posture behavior or follow-up attacks. Test one boss move in isolation and consult that game’s official mechanics information. Success against a normal enemy does not establish that the boss’s corresponding animation can be deflected.

When starting a game that you do not know, answer these questions before committing to one defense:
- What input performs a parry or deflection, and what input performs a dodge?
- Does the tutorial or manual identify which attacks are eligible?
- What does a successful parry reward: posture, stance, stagger, damage, a critical opening or only safety?
- What does a failed parry cost, and can you recover before the next hit?
- Does dodging reposition you, consume a resource or leave you vulnerable to a follow-up?
- Which equipment supports each defense, and can the chosen tool perform the required action?
- What cue marks the moment of contact?
- Can you execute that timing consistently while managing movement, camera control and other enemies?
If the answers are unclear, use evasion while gathering information. Once you know the attack’s eligibility and reward, add parries selectively rather than replacing every dodge with a high-risk input.
The practical verdict
Use parry for a readable, eligible attack when the game’s reward—posture damage, stance break, stagger or a critical opening—outweighs the cost of a miss and you are positioned to exploit it. Use dodge when the move is uncertain, cannot be parried, covers an area, demands repositioning or exceeds your current consistency. The strongest defense is not the one with the highest theoretical reward; it is the one that matches the particular game’s rules and that you can perform reliably in the situation on screen.
