The report describes allegations, not a finding of guilt; the sources available do not establish the case’s eventual court outcome.
What reportedly happened at Miami airport?
CBS Miami reported that Alberto Hernandez Castillo arrived at Miami International Airport on October 4, 2026, aboard a World Atlantic flight from Havana. The account, attributed to federal documents, says he was selected for secondary inspection and had answered “No” when asked whether he was bringing animals or wildlife into the country.
Officers reportedly noticed what the report called an “unexplained bulge” near his waist and pelvis. A pat-down allegedly revealed six plastic tubes, taped and fitted with mesh near their openings, concealed in pockets sewn into his underwear. The tubes reportedly contained 10 live birds.
The report says Castillo told officers the birds were for his “personal use” and later invoked his right to remain silent. It also describes missing wildlife declaration and clearance paperwork. These are details attributed to the documents by CBS Miami, not independently established findings or a court verdict. Read CBS Miami’s October 6, 2026 report.

The birds were identified in the report as eight yellow-faced grassquits and two blue grosbeaks. The account does not establish whether either species is covered by a particular U.S. wildlife law in this case; that depends on the applicable species lists and rules.
Do you need a permit to bring birds into the United States?
Requirements depend on the species, what is being transported, and the circumstances of the import. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Migratory Bird Import/Export permit authorizes import or export across the U.S. international boundary for covered live birds and listed specimens or parts. Check the service’s permit information and verify whether the species and activity are covered.

What other import rules may apply?
