As of October 9, 2026, there is no confirmed way to play Grand Theft Auto VI on PC this year. Rockstar and Take-Two list the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 launch date, and neither company has announced a PC version or a PC release date. PS5 emulation has made real progress, but the emulator project’s own documentation and the reported tests do not show GTA VI running on it.
What is confirmed for GTA VI
Rockstar’s official support page lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its official game page gives November 19, 2026 as the release date, and Take-Two’s release lineup shows the same platforms and date. Neither the official Rockstar pages nor Take-Two’s listing mention a PC edition.
Rockstar’s support page describes digital and physical versions. The boxed physical version contains a download code, not a disc. Code redemption is subject to region rules tied to the platform account. Rockstar recommends buying and playing through a retailer in the country associated with the platform account to avoid activation problems.
Sony has promoted the game as a PlayStation 5 title. In a PlayStation.Blog post, Mary Yee, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” That is a platform partner’s marketing statement, not an independent performance comparison.

What PS5 emulation can actually run
KytyPS5 is a free, open-source PS5 emulator in active development. Its README says the emulator can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games. It also warns that compatibility, stability and performance vary, and that builds may change significantly. The project names improving compatibility and boot reliability as its priorities.
The README does not list GTA VI as compatible. Booting a selection of 3D games is a meaningful milestone, but it is a different thing from running a specific title that has not been tested.

What the GTA V tests show
The most concrete recent data point is for GTA V, not GTA VI. Each result below is for a different game, and each should be read with its own conditions.
A community compatibility report
A KytyPS5 community compatibility report for the PS5 version of GTA V records an “in-game” result. The same report documents lag, visual problems and crashes in the builds tested. Community labels depend on the specific build, operating system and hardware, so they should not be read as a guarantee that the game will play well.

Tom’s Hardware’s September 6, 2026 demonstration
Tom’s Hardware reported that a KytyPS5 demonstration of PS5 GTA V ran at roughly 40–60 FPS in the opening mission on a high-end PC. The demonstration then crashed before the article could establish stable full-game play, and the open-world test stayed incomplete. The 40–60 FPS range comes from that one reported demonstration. It does not predict performance on other hardware or in other parts of the game.
The wider state of PS5 emulation
Tom’s Hardware’s July 2026 assessment described the broader PS5 emulation field as early and noted that emulation takes a long time to perfect. That is the publication’s view, not a developer commitment or a schedule. The later GTA V report shows progress since July, but it still does not demonstrate GTA VI compatibility.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Why the headline overreaches
The headline combines three separate claims that the evidence does not connect. Emulator progress is real. A PC release of GTA VI is unannounced. A GTA V demonstration is not a GTA VI test. Any of those can change, but the current evidence does not support a claim that GTA VI will play on PC in 2026.
Several developments would change that picture:
- An official Rockstar or Take-Two announcement that lists a PC platform or PC release date.
- A KytyPS5 compatibility list that includes GTA VI, with a tested build and reported behavior.
- Reproducible, multi-hour test reports of GTA VI on an emulator, published by a named outlet or the project itself.
Your realistic options
The choice comes down to whether you need a supported platform or PC specifically, and how much instability you will accept. The table compares the paths available as of October 9, 2026. No hardware cost figures are stated in the official sources or the emulator documentation, so those cells read “not stated.”

| PlayStation 5 | Officially listed; launch November 19, 2026 | Not stated | Low |
| Xbox Series X|S | Officially listed; launch November 19, 2026 | Not stated | Low |
| Official PC version | No PC version or release date announced | Not stated | Unknown timing |
| PS5 emulation on PC (KytyPS5) | GTA VI not listed as compatible; GTA V tests show crashes and lag | Not stated; emulator software is free and open-source per its README | High |
If you want to play on a confirmed platform, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the options with official launch listings. If you specifically want PC, the only path with official support is one that has not been announced yet.
What to watch before buying a PC plan around GTA VI
Check Rockstar’s official GTA VI page and Take-Two’s release listings for platform changes. Those are the sources that would confirm a PC edition. Treat emulator news as a development update unless it names GTA VI, a tested build and reported behavior.
Tom’s Hardware’s July 2026 piece and the September 2026 GTA V report are useful for tracking progress, but neither establishes an expected date for GTA VI on emulators.
