This guide reflects official update information through the 0.4.0 notes; check the live game for the current roster, node effects, and trial rules, which can change between updates.
What are ascendancies in Path of Exile 2?
An ascendancy is a specialization for a character class. Its passive choices add mechanics that can shape how a build deals damage, stays alive, or uses particular skills. The useful question is therefore not simply which ascendancy ranks highest, but which one supports the way you want your character to work—and what tradeoffs its mechanics require.
Ascendancy options and effects are version-sensitive. Grinding Gear Games’ official patch notes show both new choices and changes to existing passives: the 0.2.0 notes add classes and ascendancies, the 0.3.0 notes include node changes, and the 0.4.0 notes include further ascendancy changes. Read the descriptions in your current client before committing to a build plan.
Which ascendancy should I choose?
Start with the build concept, then compare the actual passive choices available to your character in the live version. A broad class or ascendancy label is not enough to establish that a choice suits a particular skill, damage type, or defensive plan.

- Core mechanic: Identify what the ascendancy’s passives encourage you to do. Prefer mechanics that fit the combat loop you want to play.
- Build interaction: Check whether the passives support your intended skills and damage or defense patterns. Do not assume an interaction that the in-game descriptions do not establish.
- Investment and tradeoffs: Consider what the mechanic asks of your skill choices, passive points, resources, survivability, or gear. A powerful-sounding effect may not help if your build cannot support it.
- Patch stability: Treat build recommendations as tied to a particular version. An update can alter the passive effect that a recommendation depends on.
What changed in the official updates?
The official notes establish additions and changes, not a complete current roster. These dated examples are useful context, but do not treat an older update’s list as the live list.

These examples demonstrate why an old guide can become unreliable even if its class names remain familiar: the available options may expand, and the effects or behavior of passives may change.

How do I unlock an ascendancy?
The available official information here does not establish the current live trial requirements or a dependable sequence of unlock steps. Check the current in-game quest and trial instructions, or a current official Grinding Gear Games guide, rather than relying on an unverified older route. Trial access and the Ascension device are also relevant to the change procedure described in the official 0.2.0f preview, but that preview alone should not be treated as confirmation of today’s exact rules.
Can I change my ascendancy?
Grinding Gear Games’ 0.2.0f preview described changing ascendancy class by refunding all allocated ascendancy points, then repeating an appropriate Ascendancy Trial. At the Ascension device, the player could choose a different class if the trial would grant the same number of points already held. Because this is a preview-era description rather than confirmation of the current live procedure, verify the rules in the current client before spending time or currency on a respec.

What is the best ascendancy for my build?
There is no patch-independent answer established here. “Best” depends on the current passive effects, the build’s skills and gear, the content goal, and the player’s preferred tradeoffs. Compare the live ascendancy descriptions against those specific needs, and use recommendations that name the game version they apply to. A third-party directory reports eight base classes and 22 ascendancies, but the official sources cited here do not confirm that count or provide a complete current roster; check the game itself for the choices currently available.
