If Path of Exile 2 closes to the PS5 dashboard, work through the steps below from least disruptive to most disruptive. These are general PlayStation troubleshooting steps—not confirmed PoE 2-specific fixes—and the available official guidance does not establish that any one step will resolve every crash. First note whether the game actually closes to the dashboard or instead disconnects and returns you to the login screen; Grinding Gear Games asks players to distinguish those outcomes when reporting problems.
Before you start: identify what is failing
A crash and a disconnect point toward different investigations. A crash closes the game, often returning you to the PS5 dashboard. A disconnect interrupts online play and may return you to the login screen. If other games also freeze or crash, treat the problem as potentially console-wide; if only PoE 2 is affected, prioritize game-specific reporting to Grinding Gear Games (GGG).
These steps follow PlayStation’s general support guidance for games that crash or will not start. They are not a claim that GGG has confirmed a current PoE 2 crash defect or endorsed each step as a title-specific workaround.
Try these 10 steps in order

Check for a Path of Exile 2 update
Highlight Path of Exile 2 on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. Install any available update, then test the game again. PlayStation recommends checking for game updates when troubleshooting crashes.

Update PS5 system software
Check the PS5 system software update screen and install an available update. PlayStation recommends using the latest system software for game launch and crash problems. Follow the console’s prompts, then retry the game.

Restart the PS5
Open the control center, select Power, then Restart PS5. A restart is a simple first step before changing the installation or system settings.

Move the game off USB extended storage
If PoE 2 is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the PS5’s internal storage and test it there. PlayStation includes moving a game to internal storage among its troubleshooting steps for games that will not start.

Restore licenses
On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the licenses to restore, and confirm. PlayStation lists license restoration as a troubleshooting option for games that will not start.

Make sure the digital download is complete
If you use the digital version, check the game’s download or installation status and wait for the full download and installation to finish before launching. PlayStation recommends confirming that a digital game is completely downloaded and installed when troubleshooting a game that freezes or crashes.

Delete and reinstall Path of Exile 2
If the earlier checks do not help, delete the game and download it again from your library. Be prepared to download the game again; this is a more time-consuming step, and PlayStation lists reinstalling as an escalation option. Do not assume that deleting the game will fix an account, server, or network problem.

Clear the PS5 cache or rebuild the database in Safe Mode
PlayStation lists Safe Mode cache clearing and database rebuilding among its troubleshooting options for game launch problems. To enter Safe Mode, turn off the console, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep; connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Choose the relevant cache or database option and follow the on-screen prompts. Read the selected option carefully before confirming.

Back up before considering a reset or system software reinstall
Do not jump to a console reset as an early fix. PlayStation warns that resetting erases saved data stored on the console; system software reinstallation also calls for a backup. Back up important data before considering either more disruptive recovery option, and review PlayStation’s instructions for the exact operation you intend to perform.

Report a PoE 2-only problem, or contact PlayStation if several games are affected
If only PoE 2 is affected, post in GGG’s PS5 issues forum and include enough detail for others to reproduce or distinguish the problem. If multiple games are affected, consult PlayStation support; Sony says that pattern may indicate a console issue.

How to report a crash or disconnect to GGG
GGG’s Console Bug Reports FAQ says: “Client crashes or disconnects are sent to us automatically.” If you can reproduce the issue, GGG asks you to report the steps. When the cause is unclear, it says it will investigate the default crash report. Include the details its FAQ requests:
- Platform and PS5 model.
- Time the issue occurred and your location or selected gateway.
- Any error message or error code.
- Whether the game closed to the dashboard or returned you to the login screen.
- Whether the issue can be reproduced, and the steps that trigger it.
- Whether you use a wired connection or Wi-Fi.
GGG’s FAQ also says local console problems can follow a shutdown, recommends a power cycle, and suggests reinstalling if the issue persists and is not a known global issue. Check the current FAQ for its latest guidance before changing versions or trying a title-specific workaround; its note that the PS5 game version is recommended for PS5 owners is not, by itself, a confirmed fix for a particular crash.

It returns to login rather than the dashboard
Record it as a disconnect, not a game crash, in your report. GGG specifically asks which of those outcomes occurred. Note the time, gateway or location, and whether you are on Wi-Fi or wired internet so the report describes the conditions.

Other games also freeze or close
Contact PlayStation support rather than assuming the problem is unique to PoE 2. Sony’s guidance is: “If you continue to experience issues and they affect more than one game, there might be an issue with your console.”
You are playing a disc-based game
PlayStation’s disc-cleaning advice applies only when the affected game is played from a disc. It is not a remedy for a digital PoE 2 installation.
