To complete the Trial of Chaos in Path of Exile 2, take an Inscribed Ultimatum to the Temple of Chaos, choose a modifier before each room, and finish the objective shown in game. In Early Access version 0.5.5, room rewards are banked in chests and you can leave between rooms and resume later. This guide reflects version 0.5.5 and its September 2026 Hotfix 7; check in-game text for details that remain unconfirmed, especially the Trialmaster’s door requirement.
How to enter the Trial of Chaos
Use an Inscribed Ultimatum at the altar in the Temple of Chaos. The campaign route described in the current guide begins by defeating Xyclucian in the Chimeral Wetlands and proceeding to the Temple. For a campaign entry, read the Trial count shown on the item or in game: the later-tier count table does not establish how many rooms that entry contains.

For later Inscribed Ultimatums, a September 2026 guide reports these area-level bands and Trial counts. These are secondary-source figures and may change in a future patch.
| Area level | Reported Trials | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 39–59 | 4 | Shorter later entry |
| 60–74 | 7 | Intermediate entry |
| 75–80 | 10 | Full endgame segment; associated with the Fate route in the guide |
The same guide reports that Inscribed Ultimatums begin dropping from area level 39, but gives no fixed drop frequency. [Gamers.Wiki, September 2026]

How each Trial room works
A run is a chain of rooms. Before an encounter, choose one of the offered modifiers, then complete the objective displayed for that room. Do not rely on an old guide’s fixed room order: in 0.5.5, Kill All Monsters and Survive encounters appear more often than Escort, Sacrifice, and Implant Soul Cores.
Current modifier and hazard changes
Grinding Gear Games’ 0.5.5 notes say modifiers display their actual values more clearly, and difficulty-raising modifiers also improve the quality of drops from slain monsters. Turrets and Petrification Statues can now appear together. At the starting level, encounters have three Burning or Shocking Turrets and two Petrification Statues; higher tiers add more. [Grinding Gear Games 0.5.5 patch notes]
The notes also say Survive encounters move to the next wave faster when all monsters are slain. Certain waves include guaranteed Rare Monsters, and killing those Rares reduces the timer. Uxmal’s arena was redesigned, with more dangerous but more rewarding elite monsters. The Trialmaster now stops time only at the start of the overall run instead of in nearly every room, while doors and elevators are faster and more responsive. [Grinding Gear Games 0.5.5 patch notes]
Objectives and practical tactics
- Kill All Monsters: Clear every enemy in the room. The 0.5.5 weighting makes this objective more common.
- Survive: Activate the altar and endure the waves. Clear enemies quickly; killing Rare Monsters in certain waves shortens the timer.
- Escort the Statue: Move with the statue and stay within its area while it advances.
- Implant Soul Cores: Carry cores back to the central altar. A current secondary guide warns that carrying one applies increasing damage over time, so return it promptly.
- Sacrifice Monsters: Kill enemies inside marked blood circles to make progress.
These objective explanations and the Soul Core carrying warning come from secondary guide material, not the official patch notes. [Gamers.Wiki, September 2026]

A current secondary guide describes Bahlak, the Sky Seer; Chetza, the Feathered Plague; and Uxmal, the Beastlord as Trial bosses, and places boss encounters around Trials 4, 7, and 10 in the familiar ten-Trial model. The precise current room schedule is not established, so use the encounter shown in game rather than treating those positions as guaranteed. [Gamers.Wiki, September 2026]
Leaving, resuming, and handling failure
In 0.5.5, you can leave the Trial and resume later from the same room. Grinding Gear Games’ patch notes state: “Now you can leave the Trial of Chaos at any point and resume your run at a later time from the same room.” Each completed room has a reward chest, so a death no longer means losing the entire accumulated set of rewards. [Grinding Gear Games 0.5.5 patch notes]
A sensible stopping point is after completing a room and opening its chest, before entering the next encounter. The official notes do not specify whether an unfinished encounter has its own checkpoint, how long a saved run lasts, or what happens to an unopened chest. A current secondary guide describes death as ending the active attempt while preserving chests already opened; treat that as guide interpretation rather than a fully specified official rule. After 0.5.5, official completion reward categories are Currency and Soul Cores. Corrupted items are no longer reward outcomes, and the Trialmaster can no longer drop Magic-Rarity Inscribed Ultimatums. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete chest-by-chest reward table, guaranteed quantities, or drop percentages, so no particular currency or Soul Core is assured. [Grinding Gear Games 0.5.5 patch notes] [Neonsect, 2026]
Completing a ten-Trial Inscribed Ultimatum gives you the choice to stop or continue up to twice without another Inscribed Ultimatum. Each successful continuation awards a different Trialmaster Fragment. Modifiers and reward quality carry forward, and the continuation offers an optional double-or-nothing Currency wager. [Grinding Gear Games 0.5.5 patch notes]
- Stop if your immediate goal is the relevant Ascendancy segment or your build is struggling with the current hazards.
- Continue if you are deliberately pursuing Trialmaster Fragments or more Currency and Soul Cores, and can handle the carried modifiers.
- Decide on the wager separately: it is optional, and the reviewed sources provide no universal expected-value calculation for it or for continuing.
Ascendancy points in a party
Grinding Gear Games’ September 6, 2026 0.5.5 Hotfix 7 fixed a bug that let players join an already completed Trial and claim Ascendancy Points. The official note says “now only players in the instance at the time the boss dies can claim Points.” Party members who need the Points must therefore be present in the instance when the boss dies. [Grinding Gear Games, 0.5.5 Hotfix 7]
Trialmaster door and Fates: what is not confirmed
A current secondary guide associates the ten-Trial, area-level 75–80 tier with Fates and maps Deadly Fate to Bahlak, Victorious Fate to Chetza, and Cowardly Fate to Uxmal. It describes the older instruction to collect all three Fates and complete another ten-Trial run to open the Trialmaster’s door as pre-0.5.5 guidance. That guide does not confirm the current door requirement. Check the current in-game item text or a newer official announcement before following any definitive access steps.
