The “Unknown object type serialized by server” error was a Path of Exile 2 client crash reported during the April 4, 2025 launch of the Dawn of the Hunt update. Grinding Gear Games said it had fixed the crash in 0.2.0 Hotfix 3. That confirms the fix for the launch-day incident, but does not establish whether the same error has returned in later versions.
What caused the crash?
During the Dawn of the Hunt launch, players reported crashes in towns with the message “Unknown object type serialized by server.” Grinding Gear Games acknowledged the specific crash in its official launch-day thread and said it was investigating it.

How was it fixed?
On April 4, 2025, Grinding Gear Games announced that Path of Exile 2 version 0.2.0 Hotfix 3 addressed the crash. The fix is the confirmed remedy for the launch-day incident. The announcement does not say that every later crash displaying the same text has the same cause.
If you encounter the message now, check the game’s current official announcements and patch notes for a newer report before assuming the 2025 hotfix applies. The available official notice does not provide separate troubleshooting steps for a recurrence.
