Grinding Gear Games (GGG) warned players to expect queues when Path of Exile 2 entered Early Access on December 6, 2024, after more than one million users had redeemed Early Access keys. That milestone was a count of key redemptions—not a verified total of ordinary game sales or players online at once—and GGG’s launch-day updates documented database work, staged logins and a realm restart.
What did the one-million milestone count?
On December 5, 2024, GGG posted the headline “Over 1 Million Users Redeemed PoE2 Keys – Expect Queues All Weekend” on the official Path of Exile forum. The figure described users who had redeemed Early Access keys. It should not be presented as one million conventional retail sales, concurrent players, or a count of everyone who would try to log in.
Game director Jonathan Rogers was also quoted saying that key redemptions had passed one million and sales were still increasing, in a video referenced by Arcader News. The official forum post is the primary source for GGG’s milestone and queue warning; the secondary report supplies that quotation attribution.
Why did GGG warn about queues?
GGG explicitly expected queues over the launch weekend. The warning reflected the number of people preparing to enter Early Access and the strain expected on the game’s backend. It did not establish a single wait duration for every player, and the available updates do not support a universal estimate.

#1 Best Overall
Early Access was scheduled to begin December 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. Pacific time (2 p.m. Eastern). GGG’s Early Access FAQ described the launch-period access routes and terms: standalone PC, Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5; access through a new Early Access Supporter Pack with a key, or eligibility based on some existing account spending. The FAQ said macOS was not available at launch. These are historical launch details, not a statement of current platform availability or purchase terms.
What happened when Early Access opened?
GGG’s official launch live-update thread records operational changes on December 6. At 1:15 p.m. Eastern, after the scheduled start time, GGG said it was making last-minute database upgrades to handle the number of players preparing to log in and warned of a possible short delay. That was an operational update, distinct from the previously announced launch time.

Players were admitted in batches
In a later update, GGG said it was letting queued players in batches so the team could monitor the backend and avoid overloading it. The approach indicates a staged admission process; it does not show that every player was blocked or experienced the same wait.
A configuration issue led to a realm restart
The live thread also records a configuration problem that required a realm restart. It separately documents an incident involving a Steam purchase queue. Together, these updates show that the launch involved both planned load management and service issues, rather than only the pre-launch queue warning.

Are those queues happening now?
No current queue status follows from these December 2024 reports. The milestone post and live-update thread describe the Early Access launch period, not present-day server conditions or wait times. A historical launch warning should not be used as a guide to whether a player will encounter a queue now.
