Only the higher-level copy applies. You can still combine several different, compatible support gems on that skill, and one support gem can affect multiple skills when every gem is in the same linked socket group.
That answer is specific to Path of Exile 1. Path of Exile 2 has a different duplicate-gem and socket system; a 2025 forum discussion about version 0.3 reports that duplicate support gems can be equipped, but it does not establish that identical supports stack on one skill. Treat “stack” as two separate questions: whether the game lets you equip another copy, and whether the copies’ bonuses accumulate.

What “stack” can mean in Path of Exile
Players use stack in two different ways. The first is an equipment question: can you place a second copy of a gem in your character’s sockets? The second is an effect question: if two copies are linked to the same active skill, do both bonuses increase the skill’s damage, speed, cost or other modifiers?

A game version may permit duplicate gems while still selecting only one copy for a particular skill. When evaluating a build, identify the game first, then identify whether the gems are duplicate copies or different supports, and finally check whether they are in the same linked group as the skill.

Path of Exile 1: duplicate supports do not stack on one skill
Only the higher-level copy applies
In Path of Exile 1, linking two copies of the same support gem to the same skill does not combine their modifiers. The game uses the higher-level copy for that skill. The lower-level duplicate contributes no additional version of the support effect, so adding it consumes a socket without providing a second multiplier or another copy of the bonus.
This rule concerns duplicate support gems attached to one skill. It does not mean that every repeated gem name in a character’s equipment is globally disabled. The relevant test is whether the same support is linked to the same skill in the same setup.
Different supports can all modify the skill
Several different support gems may affect one active skill at the same time, provided each support is compatible with that skill and is linked to it. Their effects are evaluated as separate supports rather than treated as duplicates. This is the normal way to add multiple support effects: choose distinct supports whose conditions and tags match the skill, then place them in the same linked group.
One support can affect several skills
A support gem in a linked group can modify each supported skill in that group. The support does not have to be immediately beside the active skill; what matters is that the sockets are linked and that the support is compatible with the skills in the group. A single support can therefore apply to more than one skill, while two copies of that same support do not stack on one skill merely because both are linked.
How the Path of Exile 1 rule works in practice
| Gem relationship | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Two copies of the same support linked to one skill | Only the higher-level copy applies; the effects do not add together. | Keep the higher-level copy and replace the other with a different compatible support. |
| Two or more different supports linked to one skill | Each compatible support can modify the skill. | Use distinct supports whose requirements and effects fit the skill. |
| One support linked with several skills | The support can modify each compatible skill in that linked group. | Check every skill’s compatibility instead of assuming the support affects only one. |
| Same support name elsewhere in an unrelated setup | The cited rule is about duplicates linked to the same skill; it does not describe a global character-wide merge. | Evaluate each linked group separately. |
Why gem level matters when duplicates are present
Support gems have levels, and the Path of Exile 1 duplicate rule uses those levels to choose the effective copy. If one copy is level 20 and the other is level 18, the level 20 support supplies the effect for the linked skill. The lower-level copy is not an extra level 18 layer on top of it.
This is why replacing a duplicate with a different support is usually more useful than leaving both copies equipped. The second copy cannot create a second instance of the same support effect on that skill, but a distinct compatible support can add another modifier.
Do not infer a stacking result from the number of support sockets alone. A six-socket group does not mean six copies of one support can be multiplied together. The effective combination depends on the names of the supports, their compatibility with the active skill, and the links connecting them.
Step-by-step: fixing a duplicate-support setup in PoE 1
- Identify the active skill. Start with the skill whose damage or utility you are trying to improve. The duplicate rule is applied per supported skill, not by simply counting gems in the character’s inventory.
- List every support linked to that skill. Include supports in the same linked group even when a support socket is not directly adjacent to the skill socket. Links, not physical order, determine the group.
- Mark repeated support names. If the same support appears more than once for that skill, treat the copies as duplicates rather than separate bonuses.
- Compare the duplicate levels. Keep the higher-level copy for its effect. The lower-level copy will not add a second application of the support.
- Choose a different compatible support for the freed socket. Check that the replacement can support the active skill; an incompatible gem will not provide the intended modifier.
- Check the complete linked group again. Confirm that the replacement is actually linked to the skill and that no other repeated support has been introduced.
This procedure addresses effect stacking. If a game version refuses to let you equip a duplicate at all, that is an equip restriction rather than evidence that two copies would have stacked.
Compatibility and links are separate checks
A support must be both compatible with the skill and linked to it. A support can be present in the same item but outside the linked group, in which case it does not modify that skill. Conversely, a linked support that is not compatible cannot be made effective by moving it next to the skill; the connection and the gem’s compatibility are separate requirements.
When troubleshooting a build, inspect those two conditions independently. First ask whether the support is in the same linked group. Then ask whether the support is one of the supports that can modify that skill. Only after both checks pass does the duplicate-versus-different-support rule become relevant.
Do “physical” and “spell” tags make a support a skill gem?
No. Skill gems and support gems are separate categories for modifiers that refer to gem levels. In an official Path of Exile forum discussion titled Not working? +1 to level of all physical spell skill gems, Grinding Gear Games staff member Mark_GGG clarified: “The bonus applies to skill gems, not support gems, which have both the Physical and Spell tags.”

The practical implication is that a modifier saying it grants levels to physical spell skill gems does not automatically grant a level to a support gem merely because that support carries Physical and Spell tags. Tags can describe what a gem does or what it supports; they do not erase the distinction between an active skill gem and a support gem.
This classification point is related to gem setup decisions but is not a duplicate-stacking rule. A +level modifier’s scope must be read as written, and a support’s tags alone do not broaden a modifier that explicitly targets skill gems.

What the 0.3 discussion reports
A 2025 Path of Exile forum thread titled Cast on Critical now limited to one?! discusses a change associated with Path of Exile 2 version 0.3. A participant reports that duplicate support gems can be used, while duplicate skill gems are restricted in the main skill sockets. The thread also includes the complaint that a second gem could not be equipped, showing why players may use “stack” to mean either permission to equip or cumulative effect.
That report is version-specific forum evidence, not a timeless rule for every Path of Exile 2 patch and not a formal statement that identical supports add their modifiers together on one skill. It establishes that the duplicate-gem system differs from the Path of Exile 1 system being described above, but it does not answer the effect-stacking question for every support.
How to interpret a duplicate-support question in PoE 2
- Confirm the exact Path of Exile 2 patch, because the reported behavior is tied to version 0.3.
- Separate the ability to equip a duplicate support from the way that support is calculated on a skill.
- Check the specific gem’s current wording and patch documentation before assuming that two identical supports multiply an effect.
- Do not cite the Path of Exile 1 “higher level wins” rule as a universal Path of Exile 2 rule without version-specific confirmation.
If a PoE 2 setup allows a second copy, that answers only the first question. You still need evidence that the game applies both copies to the same skill rather than selecting one, limiting the effect, or treating the gems in another way.
Common mistakes and how to diagnose them
“I added a second copy, but the tooltip did not improve”
For a Path of Exile 1 skill, that result is expected when both gems are the same support. Keep the higher-level copy and test a different compatible support instead. If the second gem is a different support, verify that it is linked and compatible before concluding that it failed.
“The gem is in the item, so it should support the skill”
Being in the same item is not enough. The support must be in the linked socket group that contains the skill. A support outside the links does not modify the skill, even if the sockets are adjacent in the item’s display.
“The support has the right tags, so a +level modifier should raise it”
Tags do not change a support into a skill gem. A modifier written for physical spell skill gems can exclude supports, as Mark_GGG’s forum clarification explains. Read the target category in the modifier rather than matching tags alone.
“A PoE 2 forum post says duplicates are allowed, so two copies must stack”
Allowing duplicate equipment and combining duplicate effects are different mechanics. Treat the 0.3 report as evidence about equipping duplicates, then verify the specific support’s behavior for the patch you are playing.
A quick decision checklist
- Playing Path of Exile 1? Two copies of the same support on one skill do not stack; use the higher-level copy.
- Using different supports? They can all modify the skill when they are compatible and linked.
- Sharing one support across skills? A linked support can affect each compatible skill in that group.
- Checking a +level modifier? Distinguish skill gems from support gems; matching tags are not sufficient.
- Playing Path of Exile 2? Confirm the patch and separate duplicate-equip rules from duplicate-effect rules.
The reliable answer to “Do multiple gems stack?” therefore depends on the version and on what “multiple” describes. In Path of Exile 1, duplicate supports do not add together on one skill, while different compatible supports do. Path of Exile 2 requires a version-specific check, and the reported 0.3 duplicate-support allowance should not be treated as proof of cumulative effects.
