Path of Exile’s Necropolis was the 3.24 Challenge League, built around a two-part loop: the Lantern of Arimor revealed spirits haunting monsters, and corpses from those monsters became inputs for crafting in the Necropolis. Allflame Embers had a separate role: they replaced monster packs to change encounters. Necropolis is a historical league, not a current league mechanic.
How did the Necropolis mechanic work?
Grinding Gear Games introduced Undertaker Arimor, who was gathering the scattered spirits of the Eternal Empire. Arimor gave the player the Lantern of Arimor, which illuminated spirits haunting monsters throughout Wraeclast. The league then connected those encounters to a separate grave-based crafting system.
- Read the Lantern’s area modifiers. The Lantern revealed spirits haunting monsters and displayed modifiers affecting the area.
- Fight haunted monsters and collect corpses. Corpses from those monsters could be taken to the Necropolis.
- Bury corpses and exorcise them. Placed in graves, corpses supplied souls used to forge an item.
- Use Allflame Embers to alter an encounter. Applied through the Lantern, an Ember replaced a monster pack rather than serving as a grave-crafting ingredient.
In its official 3.24.0 notes, published March 29, 2024, Grinding Gear Games described the result this way: “The Undertaker’s mysterious soul experiments can coalesce into powerful items.” Read the 3.24.0 announcement and mechanic overview.
What was the difference between corpses and Allflame Embers?
| Item | Role in the league | Where it fit |
|---|---|---|
| Corpses | Crafting inputs gathered from haunted monsters | Buried in Necropolis graves and exorcised to create an item |
| Allflame Embers | Replaced a monster pack | Used through the Lantern to change an area encounter |
The distinction matters: corpses fed the crafting system, while Allflame Embers changed which monsters appeared. They were related to the Lantern-based league loop but were not interchangeable resources.

What changed during patch 3.24.0b?
Grinding Gear Games revised parts of the system in patch 3.24.0b, published April 3, 2024. These are specific early-league changes, not a complete record of every balance update.
- Corpses could be itemised as they dropped or through the Morgue interface, and the previous 1 Chaos Orb cost for itemising them was removed.
- Players gained the option to select the base type when crafting. Certain special base types still required specific corpses.
- The Lantern interface began showing how area downsides increased the quantities of collectible corpses and Allflame Embers.
- The patch added 12 new Allflame Embers.

Which Necropolis league versions were available?
The 3.24.0 launch notes listed Standard, Hardcore, Solo Self-Found, and Ruthless variations of the Necropolis Challenge League. They shared the same core mechanics and items; the variations were league formats rather than different versions of the grave-crafting system. The launch notes describe the league variations.

Is Necropolis still an active league?
No: Necropolis should be understood as a past challenge league. Grinding Gear Games’ Xbox-specific 3.24.3c patch notes, published July 23, 2024, state, “This is the end of the Necropolis League.” They also say Coffins and Allflame Embers would be deleted upon logging in. Because that notice is specifically for Xbox, it does not establish every detail of current PC availability. Read the Xbox 3.24.3c patch notes.
