Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—under Pathfinder First Edition rules, natural armor stacks with mage armor. Mage armor grants a +4 armor bonus to Armor Class, while natural armor is a different bonus type. Different bonus types normally add together. A creature with +2 natural armor that receives mage armor therefore gains +6 from those two sources against ordinary attacks, before Dexterity, shield, deflection, size, and other modifiers.
The important exception is worn armor: worn armor and mage armor are both armor bonuses, so you do not add them together. Also, natural armor does not increase touch AC, while mage armor has a special force-based interaction that can protect against incorporeal touch attacks. This ruling is for Pathfinder First Edition; do not apply it automatically to another edition.

The short ruling for Pathfinder First Edition
Pathfinder’s stacking system is based first on bonus type. The Core Rulebook treats natural armor and armor as separate categories:
| Defense | Bonus type | Stacks with the other? | What it affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural armor | Natural armor bonus | Yes, with an armor bonus such as mage armor | Ordinary AC, not normal touch AC |
| Mage armor | +4 armor bonus | Yes, with natural armor; no, with another armor bonus | Ordinary AC; its force effect can matter against incorporeal touch attacks |
| Worn armor | Armor bonus | No, with mage armor’s armor bonus | Ordinary AC, not normal touch AC |
Thus, a monster with +2 natural armor and no worn armor has an ordinary AC contribution of +6 after casting mage armor: +2 natural armor plus +4 armor. That arithmetic does not include Dexterity or any other modifier. If the same creature puts on armor that grants a +5 armor bonus, it uses the better armor bonus rather than adding +5 and +4.

Why the two bonuses add together
Natural armor is its own bonus type
Natural armor represents a creature’s hide, scales, shell, carapace, or similarly tough body. Pathfinder describes natural armor as stacking with other bonuses to AC, including armor bonuses, except for another natural armor bonus. This is why a creature’s built-in natural armor can be combined with mage armor.
If two effects both provide a natural armor bonus, they normally do not accumulate. Apply the general same-type rule: only the larger bonus counts unless a specific rule says otherwise. The restriction is about the type, not whether the sources are a spell, a magic item, a racial trait, or a monster statistic.
Mage armor is an armor bonus, not natural armor
Mage armor creates a force-based protective layer and grants a +4 armor bonus to AC. Because that bonus is armor rather than natural armor, it occupies a different stacking category from a creature’s natural armor. The spell does not turn natural armor into an armor bonus and does not suppress it.

How to calculate the final AC
Use this procedure whenever a character or creature has natural armor and mage armor at the same time:
- Identify the edition. Confirm that the character is using Pathfinder First Edition rules. The same spell name or similar defensive effect in another edition may use different terminology.
- Identify the attack’s AC target. Decide whether the attacker is targeting ordinary AC, touch AC, or an incorporeal creature’s touch attack. The target determines which bonuses are eligible.
- Record each source and type. Write “natural armor,” “armor,” “shield,” “deflection,” and so on beside each value. Mage armor is +4 armor; natural armor remains natural armor.
- Combine different types. Add the natural armor bonus and mage armor’s armor bonus to the other applicable bonus types.
- Resolve duplicates. If two bonuses have the same type, use only the higher one unless a rule explicitly permits stacking. This is where worn armor and mage armor compete.
- Apply touch rules. Remove armor and natural armor from normal touch AC. Then check the special force rule if the attack is an incorporeal touch attack.
Worked ordinary-AC example
A creature has Dexterity +3, +2 natural armor, and no worn armor. It receives mage armor. Its ordinary AC modifiers include:
| Source | Value | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dexterity | +3 | Ability modifier |
| Natural armor | +2 | Different type from armor |
| Mage armor | +4 | Armor bonus |
The defensive contribution from natural armor and mage armor is +6. Add Dexterity and the creature’s base AC and any other valid bonuses according to the normal AC formula.

Suppose that same creature equips armor with a +5 armor bonus. It now has two armor bonuses: +5 from worn armor and +4 from mage armor. They do not stack. Use the +5 armor bonus, while retaining the +2 natural armor bonus. The natural armor is unaffected because its type is different.

| +5 worn armor, mage armor active | +5 (the higher armor bonus) | +2 | +7 |

| Two natural armor bonuses, no mage armor | Not applicable | Use only the higher natural armor bonus unless a specific rule permits stacking | Depends on the higher value |
Mage armor, worn armor, and armor bonuses
The phrase “mage armor stacks with armor” is ambiguous. It stacks with natural armor, but it does not stack with an armor bonus from a breastplate, chain shirt, shield-like armor effect, or another spell that also grants an armor bonus. The rule is not that mage armor is weaker or stronger in all cases; it is that same-type bonuses are not cumulative.
Compare the values after accounting for enhancement or other wording that changes the armor bonus. If worn armor provides +4 and mage armor provides +4, the result is still +4 from the armor category, not +8. If worn armor provides +2, mage armor’s +4 is the applicable armor bonus. The character does not gain both, and the lower bonus is not added as a partial benefit.
Natural armor remains separate in every one of these comparisons. A creature with +6 natural armor can keep that +6 while choosing whichever armor bonus is allowed. The stacking decision is made independently for each bonus type.

Does natural armor apply to touch AC?
No. Natural armor does not apply against a normal touch attack. Touch AC represents how difficult it is to make contact with the target, so the rules disregard physical protection such as armor and natural armor. Dexterity and other bonuses that specifically apply to touch AC remain eligible.

Because mage armor grants an armor bonus, it also does not normally increase ordinary touch AC. A character should not copy the +4 mage armor bonus into the touch-AC line merely because it raises ordinary AC.
The incorporeal touch exception
Mage armor is described as force. Its force-based nature gives it a specific interaction with incorporeal touch attacks: incorporeal creatures cannot bypass it in the same way they bypass ordinary physical armor. When an incorporeal attacker uses a touch attack, check the spell’s force wording and the applicable First Edition rules; mage armor can protect in that situation even though ordinary armor and natural armor do not.
Do not generalize this exception to every touch attack. A living opponent making a normal touch attack still ignores natural armor and ordinary armor bonuses. The special case exists because the spell is made of force and the attacker is incorporeal.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Adding every number on the character sheet
A quick total such as “+2 natural armor +4 mage armor +5 chain shirt” is wrong because it adds two armor bonuses. Mark every modifier by type before totaling AC.

Removing natural armor because mage armor is active
Mage armor does not replace natural armor. The spell supplies an armor bonus; the creature’s hide, scales, or shell still supplies its natural armor bonus.
Applying natural armor to touch AC
Keep ordinary AC and touch AC as separate calculations. Natural armor belongs to ordinary AC only. Mage armor also belongs to ordinary AC except where its force-based wording creates the incorporeal interaction.
Assuming a larger bonus always stacks
Size does not override bonus-type rules. A +4 armor bonus and a +5 armor bonus still do not combine; the +5 is used. The same principle applies to duplicate natural armor bonuses unless a specific ability states otherwise.

Label the ruling “Pathfinder First Edition” on a character sheet, campaign note, or rules discussion. Pathfinder editions use different AC terminology and implementation. If an option has edition-specific errata or FAQ language, consult the rules for that edition and printing instead of importing this result unchanged.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the game using Pathfinder First Edition?
- Is the attack targeting ordinary AC, normal touch AC, or an incorporeal touch attack?
- Which sources provide natural armor bonuses?
- Which sources provide armor bonuses?
- Are two bonuses of the same type being added accidentally?
- For duplicate bonuses, does a specific rule permit stacking, or should only the highest apply?
- Have you kept natural armor out of normal touch AC?
- If an incorporeal attacker is involved, have you checked mage armor’s force-based exception?
Following those checks produces the standard First Edition result: natural armor and mage armor add together for ordinary AC, while mage armor does not add to a separate worn-armor bonus.
Edition and rules-reference scope
This article addresses the Pathfinder First Edition Core Rulebook treatment of natural armor, armor bonuses, and the mage armor spell. The spell’s printed +4 armor bonus and the natural-armor stacking rule are the basis for the result. Paizo’s FAQ and errata material is organized by edition, so use the entry that matches the ruleset and printing at your table when a character option contains specific language that changes a general rule.
For a rules dispute, write down the exact bonus type and the exact attack type before arguing about the total. Most disagreements disappear once “armor bonus,” “natural armor bonus,” and “touch AC” are treated as separate questions rather than as one undifferentiated defense number.
