You can maintain one with a membership or Plot Tokens, or use earned Grace for a one-month Grace Plot. Whether that feels like “virtual rent” is a fair judgment: the charge is optional, but private land is time-limited.
Is Pax Dei still in Early Access?
No. The current rules discussed here are for the post-Early Access 1.0 model, not an ongoing Early Access build. Mainframe Industries says 1.0 ended wipes and brought the game to Steam and Epic, PC Game Pass, and GeForce Now. The developer’s 2025 retrospective describes the game as buy-to-play.

This is a review of the cost model, not a firsthand gameplay review. The available official information explains access, plots, and monetization; it does not establish whether the game’s moment-to-moment play is enjoyable or complete.
What can you do without paying recurring plot costs?
The developer says players can explore, craft, adventure, and play socially without subscribing. The base game includes core systems such as PvE, PvP, crafting, and building. Public starting-zone crafting stations and storage, markets, clans, and access to game areas are also described in the official FAQ.

Mainframe’s statement is direct: “We want to be very clear: you do not need a subscription to enjoy Pax Dei.” That means a recurring payment is not the price of entering the game’s core experience. It is tied to wanting and maintaining a personal plot.
What does a personal plot cost?
A plot is not permanent land included indefinitely with access to the game. It must be maintained over time. The official shop currently lists Plot Tokens as follows; prices and displayed discounts may vary by region and can change, so confirm the amount in the live shop before buying.
| Plot Token bundle | Listed price | Displayed discount price |
|---|---|---|
| One token | $4.99 | Not stated |
| Five tokens | $24.99 | $22.49 |
| Ten tokens | $49.99 | $42.49 |
One token maintains one plot for one month or adds one month to an existing plot. Tokens are therefore a way to pay for plot time without relying on a continuous monthly membership, but they do not make land permanent.
The official 1.0 monetization FAQ lists monthly membership prices below. These are the prices in that FAQ, not a guarantee that they are the complete live menu: the shop currently displays additional plans.

| Membership option | Monthly price listed in the official FAQ |
|---|---|
| Premium Status, no plot | $3.99 / €3.99 |
| Premium plus one plot | $6.99 / €6.99 |
| Premium plus two plots | $10.99 / €10.99 |
| Premium plus four plots | $18.99 / €18.99 |
Check the official monetization FAQ and live shop for the applicable regional currency and current plans. A membership is one route to plot access; it is not required just to keep playing the core game.
Can you keep a plot without a membership?
Yes. The official FAQ says Plot Tokens remain usable after a subscription ends. Tokens expire 12 months after receipt, and, if enabled, can be scheduled to renew a plot automatically. You can save them and decide when to spend them rather than paying a membership continuously. Their validity window still applies.
There is also an earned-currency route. According to Pax Dei Support’s Grace Plot guide, a Grace Plot costs 400 Grace and lasts one month; Grace can come from daily login rewards and Gold Offerings. This is an in-game alternative for one plot, not unlimited or permanent land.
What happens when plot time runs out?
An expired plot first enters a frozen state for a limited grace period. While frozen, you cannot build or destroy. If you do not renew it, its contents are moved to the Redeeming Queue, according to the official FAQ.

That is different from voluntarily releasing a plot. When you release it, the FAQ says goods are not stored in the Redeeming Queue and buildings decay. If you want to stop maintaining a plot, expiration and voluntary release are not interchangeable choices.

Pax Dei is available through PC Game Pass, and the official FAQ says that version is the same as the versions on other platforms. That addresses access to the game, not ongoing ownership of a personal plot. The FAQ does not say that Game Pass removes the separate plot-maintenance requirement.
Is paying for land worth it?
It depends on whether you want independent control of a homestead. If your priority is exploring, crafting, adventuring, or playing with others, the developer’s stated model lets you do those things without a plot subscription. If a personal base is central to how you want to play, you need to account for the cost and upkeep of plot time.
Before paying, consider whether you can instead build with permission on another player’s plot or rely on a clan’s shared space. The official FAQ confirms that building on another player’s plot is possible with permission. That trades independent control for cooperation and someone else’s continued permission.

My verdict on the phrase “virtual rent” is that it describes the feeling of recurring upkeep, but not a mandatory fee for playing Pax Dei. The distinction matters: the core game is buy-to-play, while private land is a time-limited, paid-or-earned entitlement. The developer’s 2025 retrospective says feedback raised concerns about progression pacing, mid-game engagement, update cadence, and premium-feature expectations; it says the 2026 roadmap focused on smoothing progression, reducing grind barriers, improving social tools, enriching the mid-game, and making updates more predictable. That is the developer’s account of priorities, not independent evidence that those concerns have been resolved in the live game.
