Usually, uninstalling PAYDAY 2 does not remove every mod. Steam removes the official game files it manages, but mod loaders, script mods, override assets, and other files added to the game directory can remain. Whether anything is left depends on how the mods were installed and which files are still present in the old PAYDAY 2 folder.
For a genuinely clean reinstall, treat game removal and mod removal as two separate jobs: inspect the old installation, remove the relevant mod files, then uninstall or reinstall the official game.

Why PAYDAY 2 mods can survive an uninstall
A Steam uninstall is designed to remove the game content installed through Steam. Mods are extra files placed in the PAYDAY 2 directory by a player or a mod-management tool. They are not necessarily registered as official game content, so the uninstall process may not identify them as files to remove.

A January 24, 2025 Steam Community reply describes the practical result as “uninstallation only removes official content” and says it will not remove mods on its own. That is community troubleshooting guidance rather than a formal guarantee from Steam or the game developer. Some installations may be cleared completely; others can retain one or more mod folders or loader files.

The deciding factor is the installation method. PAYDAY 2 supports script and loader-based mods, asset overrides, and older modifications handled through Bundle Modder. Those systems use different files and locations, so deleting one folder does not prove that the entire mod setup is gone.
Which PAYDAY 2 files to check
Open the game’s installation directory, referred to below as [PAYDAY 2]. On Steam, the quickest route is to open the game’s properties or context menu and choose Browse Local Files. Inspect the directory before uninstalling and again after Steam finishes, because the contents can change during removal.
| Mod type | Typical location | What it does | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Script or BLT-based mods | [PAYDAY 2]mods |
Stores script mods and supporting mod files used by a BLT-style setup. | Remove the individual mod folders or the whole mods folder after confirming you no longer need any of its contents. |
| Asset override mods | [PAYDAY 2]assetsmod_overrides |
Replaces game assets such as sounds, textures, models, or other packaged resources. | Delete the relevant override folders inside mod_overrides. If the folder is absent, there may be no override mods installed there. |
| SuperBLT loader | [PAYDAY 2]WSOCK32.dll |
Acts as a loader file outside the mods folder for a common script-modding setup. |
Delete WSOCK32.dll when removing that loader installation, after checking that you are working in the PAYDAY 2 directory. |
Older .pdmod changes |
Location varies by the Bundle Modder installation and the changes it applied. | Applies modifications through Bundle Modder rather than the standard BLT or override-folder workflow. | Use Bundle Modder’s own uninstall action for each supported mod, apply the change, then inspect the game directory for remaining files. |
The assetsmod_overrides directory is specifically intended for files that replace game assets. Documentation for the system notes that users may need to create mod_overrides under assets when installing an override. For cleanup, do not create a missing folder merely to delete it; its absence normally means there is nothing in that location to remove.

Clean-removal procedure before reinstalling
The safest sequence is to record what is installed, protect any save that may depend on custom content, remove the mods using their own method where appropriate, and only then reinstall the official game.
- Open the old game directory. In Steam, choose Browse Local Files for PAYDAY 2. Keep this window open so you can compare the directory before and after the uninstall.
- Make a backup of important saves. This is especially important if a mod added a weapon, attachment, equipment item, music, or another custom object that may be referenced by a save. Copy your save data using your normal backup method before deleting custom content.
- List the mod locations you actually use. Look for
mods,assetsmod_overrides, andWSOCK32.dll. Also note any separate mod tool or archive you used, including Bundle Modder for.pdmodchanges. - Undo Bundle Modder changes through Bundle Modder. For supported
.pdmodmods, select the installed mod in Bundle Modder, choose its uninstall function, and apply the change. This reverses tool-managed changes more reliably than deleting an unrelated folder. - Remove BLT-style files. Delete the script-mod folders in
[PAYDAY 2]mods. If you are removing the entire loader setup, also remove[PAYDAY 2]WSOCK32.dll. Do not assume that deleting only one mod folder removes the loader. - Remove asset overrides. Open
[PAYDAY 2]assetsmod_overridesand delete the override folders you no longer want. If you want a completely unmodded directory and know every folder there is a mod, the entiremod_overridesfolder can be removed. - Uninstall PAYDAY 2 in Steam. Use Steam’s normal uninstall command after the added files have been removed. Steam will remove the official content it controls.
- Inspect the directory again. If the PAYDAY 2 directory still exists, check for
mods,assetsmod_overrides,WSOCK32.dll, and any other files you recognize as mod-related. Remove remaining additions before installing again. - Reinstall only after the check is complete. A fresh download placed into a directory that still contains a loader or override files can appear modded immediately after installation.
You do not have to uninstall the game first to remove mods. In fact, checking the directory while the installation is still present makes it easier to identify which files belong to your mod setup. If you already uninstalled PAYDAY 2, use Steam’s Browse Local Files after reinstalling only if the old directory was preserved or files remain; otherwise, inspect the directory created by the new installation before adding any mods.
How the removal method differs by mod system
Script and BLT mods
These mods commonly live in mods and rely on a loader file such as WSOCK32.dll in the game root. Removing a single script mod means deleting its folder, but a fully clean BLT-style setup requires checking both locations. Leaving the loader behind can make a later installation behave as though mod support is still enabled even when the visible mod folders are gone.

Asset overrides
Override mods are placed under assetsmod_overrides. Each child folder can contain replacement assets. Remove only the folders belonging to the mods you want to keep out; removing the entire directory removes all overrides stored there. Asset overrides are separate from script mods, so clearing mods does not clear them.

Older .pdmod modifications can be managed through Bundle Modder. The tool provides an uninstall workflow for supported mods: select the mod, choose the uninstall action, and apply the change. That operation covers the changes Bundle Modder knows about; it is not a substitute for checking mods, assetsmod_overrides, or WSOCK32.dll if those were installed separately.
Save-data warning when custom content is involved
Removing a mod can affect a save if the save refers to content supplied by that mod. The community guidance specifically warns about custom weapons, attachments, equipment, music, and similar additions. If the vanilla game later tries to load a save that contains custom content it can no longer resolve, it may crash.

This is not an inevitable outcome for every modded save. It is a risk to manage. Keep a backup before removing the content, and if the unmodded game crashes while loading a particular save, restore the modded setup or restore the backup rather than repeatedly opening and resaving the affected file. Once the save loads safely, remove or replace the custom items using the mod’s own instructions before attempting another clean launch.

The game launches with old scripts or a mod menu
Close PAYDAY 2 and Steam, then open the installation directory again. Check for mods and WSOCK32.dll. A leftover loader can activate scripts even when the game’s official files were freshly downloaded. Remove the remaining files and launch again.

Inspect assetsmod_overrides, including every child folder. Asset replacement mods are independent of the script-mod folder, so deleting mods alone will not restore original assets.

The game crashes when loading a save
Consider whether the save used custom content. Restore the backup or temporarily restore the relevant mod set so the save can load, then remove the custom items in a controlled way. The crash warning is community troubleshooting advice, not proof that the save is permanently damaged.
There is no old folder after uninstalling
If Steam removed the directory completely and no mod files remain elsewhere, there is nothing additional to delete from that installation. A clean reinstall should start with only the files Steam downloads. If you kept a manual backup of the old directory, do not copy it back wholesale; copy only personal files you have verified, not the old mod folders or loader.
Final clean-install checklist
- Loader checked: no unwanted
WSOCK32.dllremains in the PAYDAY 2 root. - Script mods checked: the
modsfolder is removed or contains only mods you intentionally kept. - Override assets checked:
assetsmod_overridesis empty or contains only approved override folders. - Bundle Modder changes checked: supported
.pdmodentries were uninstalled through Bundle Modder. - Save protected: a backup exists before deleting custom-content mods.
- Directory inspected after uninstall: no added mod files were left behind before reinstalling.
- First launch tested unmodded: start the game before copying any mods back, and test a save that does not depend on removed custom content.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: uninstalling PAYDAY 2 often removes the official game files but may leave mods because those files were added separately. To remove everything, check each installation location, use Bundle Modder for supported .pdmod changes, account for save dependencies, and inspect the old directory after Steam finishes.
