For smoother PAYDAY 3 sessions on Steam Deck, start with anti-aliasing off; effects, foliage, postprocessing, and shadows on Low; textures and view distance on Medium; and AMD FSR set to Balanced. For steadier frame pacing, cap the Deck at 30 FPS, then test any higher cap in a firefight rather than a quiet area. This combines a published graphics preset with a newer guide’s conservative frame-rate advice; neither guarantees the same result in every heist.
Recommended PAYDAY 3 settings for Steam Deck
Use this as a starting point, not a guaranteed preset. PCGamesN recommended the graphics settings below on July 25, 2025, and reported a stable 50 FPS in its Steam Deck testing, with drops during large firefights. A separate guide published May 19, 2026 recommends prioritizing a 30 FPS target for consistency. Those are different guides, not controlled comparisons on the same build.
| Setting | Starting value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-aliasing | Off | PCGamesN’s published starting point. |
| Effects | Low | Reduces visual effects detail. |
| Foliage | Low | Reduces foliage detail. |
| Postprocessing | Low | Reduces postprocessing quality. |
| Shadows | Low | Reduces shadow quality. |
| Textures | Medium | Keep at Medium initially; try Low if performance remains uneven. |
| Upscaling | AMD FSR | Use the FSR mode below. |
| FSR mode | Balanced | PCGamesN says this renders internally at a lower resolution, then upscales to 1280 × 800. |
| View distance | Medium | Try Low if you need to reduce rendering load further. |
| Deck frame limit | 30 FPS for stability | The May 2026 guide recommends this conservative target. Try 40 FPS only if you accept possible dips; a locked 60 FPS is described as unrealistic in busy heists. |
How to tune for a demanding heist
- Apply the graphics baseline. Set the options in PAYDAY 3 to the values in the table, then set the Steam Deck’s frame limit to 30 FPS if consistent pacing matters most.
- Test under pressure. Check a firefight or alarm sequence, not only a quiet lobby or traversal section. Busy encounters are where the cited guides report performance drops.
- Change one thing at a time. If performance is still uneven, lower textures and view distance, or reduce the internal rendering resolution through the available upscaling options. Recheck the same kind of demanding scene after each change.
- Try a higher cap only if the trade-off suits you. A 40 FPS cap may feel more responsive, but the cited guidance does not establish it as consistently achievable. Do not treat 60 FPS as a dependable target for busy heists.
PCGamesN’s reported 50 FPS result is useful as a published reference point, not a promise: that guide also noted drops in large firefights. No cited source provides a same-build, head-to-head Deck test of the 50 FPS result and the 30 FPS recommendation.
Steam Deck compatibility and controls
SteamDB currently lists PAYDAY 3 as Playable, not Verified. Its compatibility record is dated October 18, 2023, and notes small in-game text and that the on-screen keyboard must be invoked manually for text entry. Valve defines Playable as a category where manual adjustments may be needed; its description says, “The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play*”. Check the live Steam Deck compatibility details after significant game or SteamOS updates, since Valve’s review process is ongoing.

Storage and online requirements
Steam’s PAYDAY 3 listing specifies 45 GB of available storage and broadband internet. The storage figure is a requirement on the listing, not a claim about the game’s installed size on every system. Broadband matters because the game is online co-op. If you need more room, Valve says Steam Deck supports microSD cards and formats them to the proper file system; a compatible card can add storage, but it will not improve frame rate.

Do not buy or use a dock expecting a performance boost. Valve says Steam Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. The sources also do not establish a universally best TDP value, power profile, or Deck model-specific setting for PAYDAY 3.
