You can start with it without playing the 2023 original, and it is available on Nintendo Switch, Steam, iOS and Android. The clearest reason to try it is its unusual mix of eerie storytelling, 360-degree scene searches and a new diving minigame.
What kind of game is The Mermaid’s Curse?
Square Enix describes PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse as a single-player supernatural mystery adventure and the latest entry in the series. It blends visual-novel-style storytelling with investigation: you follow different characters, examine scenes for clues and piece together a supernatural mystery rooted in local legend.
The story unfolds around Ise-Shima in Japan, on the remote Kameshima in Ise Bay. Yuza Minakuchi, a young pearl diver, encounters another version of himself on the ocean floor. That event draws him and his friend Azami Kumoi into a chain of curses and questions about the Mermaids of Ise. Other characters—including a girl with unknown origins, a foreign treasure hunter and a housewife investigating a drowning—bring different perspectives to the same mystery. Nintendo’s UK listing says the real locations and vistas were recreated in collaboration with Mie Prefecture.
How investigation and diving work
Search scenes from every angle
Rather than treating each location as a static backdrop, the game asks you to investigate 360-degree scenes for clues. That gives the mystery a more spatial feel: look around the environment and consider what details may matter as you follow the characters’ separate threads.

Follow several viewpoints
The story’s multiple characters approach the Mermaids of Ise from different directions. Their individual investigations broaden the mystery beyond Yuza’s encounter and give the game its ensemble structure.
Diving adds a new activity
A diving minigame is one of the sequel’s new features and fits its pearl-diving premise. The available descriptions establish that it is part of the experience, but do not give enough detail to characterize its challenge, controls or frequency without overstating what is known.

Is it worth playing, and do you need the first game?
PC Gamer reviewer Kerry Brunskill called it an effective self-contained mystery, emphasizing its new setting, folklore and diving activity. That makes it a reasonable choice for players who want a story-driven supernatural adventure without first completing PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo. The new setting, cast and legend offer a fresh starting point; that does not mean the games have no franchise connection.
Steam’s live listing displayed 95% positive from 454 English user reviews and 92% positive from 113 recent user reviews when checked on October 8, 2026. Those are changing Steam user-review snapshots, not critic aggregate scores. Steam also displayed short excerpts attributed to Game Informer (“Brilliant,” 9/10), Polygon (“One of 2026’s early great games.”) and Siliconera (“Tense, thoughtful, and at times genuinely unsettling,” 9/10). These snippets are not a substitute for the outlets’ full reviews.

Platforms, release dates and verified details
Square Enix announced the game for Nintendo Switch, Steam, iOS and Android. Its announcement gives February 19, 2026 as the release date, with Steam following on February 20; Nintendo’s UK Switch listing gives February 19. The mobile platforms are confirmed, but current device requirements, regional availability and prices are not established here.

The available information does not establish comparative performance, cross-platform save transfer, mobile control quality or identical pricing, so choose based on the platform you already own and the screen and controller setup you prefer. On Switch, the Pro Controller is supported but optional.

Does it have in-game purchases?
Nintendo’s UK listing says that after downloading the game, no further monetary transactions are required to experience the whole story through to its ending. Steam lists the Original Soundtrack as downloadable content; that listing does not change Nintendo’s statement about completing the game’s story.
