pbvm100.dll Missing: Restore the Right PowerBuilder Runtime

pbvm100.dll is a 32-bit PowerBuilder Virtual Machine runtime file used by older applications built with Sybase PowerBuilder 10. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the program that installed it, or obtain its complete matching PowerBuilder runtime from the software vendor.

Do not download a random copy and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. That often leaves companion files, legacy Microsoft runtime dependencies, version matching, licensing, or DLL search-order problems unresolved.

What pbvm100.dll does

PBVM means PowerBuilder Virtual Machine. pbvm100.dll is the runtime engine that allows a deployed PowerBuilder application to start and execute.

It is used by older:

  • Business and accounting software
  • Database front ends
  • Industrial and manufacturing applications
  • Internal company tools
  • Custom applications compiled with PowerBuilder

It is not a Windows system DLL and does not normally belong in either C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

A working deployment commonly includes related files such as:

  • pbshr100.dll
  • libjcc.dll
  • libjlog.dll
  • Application-specific PowerBuilder support files
  • In some deployments, legacy Microsoft runtime files such as msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll

A copy may be identified as 32-bit, version 10.0.0.3509, and approximately 3.82 MB. Treat those details as file-specific identifiers, not as a universal download target. PowerBuilder 10 applications can use different builds, and the runtime must match the application that was compiled against it.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

This is the most likely solution because the application installer should deploy the complete PowerBuilder runtime set.

  1. Close the error message and the affected application.
  2. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps, then Apps & features.
  4. Find the application that reports the pbvm100.dll error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If there is no Repair option:

  1. Return to the installed-app list.
  2. Select the application and choose Uninstall.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Run the original installer supplied by the application vendor.
  5. If the installer offers Repair, Runtime, Shared Components, or Typical installation, include those components.
  6. Restart Windows again and launch the program from its normal shortcut.

A successful repair normally starts the application without the missing-file message. If the error changes to pbshr100.dll, libjcc.dll, or another file, the original runtime was only partially restored. Repeat the installation using the vendor’s complete package rather than copying individual DLLs.

Fix 2: Get the matching PowerBuilder runtime from the vendor

Time needed: 15 minutes to several business days

Some older business applications shipped without a complete runtime, or the runtime was removed during a later upgrade. Contact the application vendor or your organization’s software administrator and request the exact PowerBuilder 10 runtime package used by that application.

Ask specifically for:

  • The matching PowerBuilder runtime installer or Runtime Packager output
  • The correct build for your application
  • All companion runtime files
  • Any required license or configuration files
  • Installation instructions for Windows 10 or Windows 11

Install the package as an administrator:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Show more options if needed.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Follow the vendor’s setup prompts.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application using its normal shortcut.

The correct runtime may be installed beside the application executable, in a bundled runtime folder, or in a vendor-configured shared PowerBuilder directory. Do not assume that a current pbvm.dll from a newer PowerBuilder release replaces the older pbvm100.dll.

If the vendor cannot provide a public download, that does not mean a random DLL repository is safe. The original installer, licensed media, or an authorized vendor package is the appropriate source.

Fix 3: Check whether the file is present but a dependency is missing

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Windows can report pbvm100.dll even when that file is visible in the application folder. The loader may actually be failing on a dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Note the path in Target.
  5. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  6. Confirm whether pbvm100.dll is present.
  7. Look in the same folder for pbshr100.dll, libjcc.dll, and libjlog.dll.

If the main file is present but the application still fails, do not replace only pbvm100.dll. Reinstall the complete runtime directory from the application installer.

The PowerBuilder 10 deployment may also depend on legacy Microsoft C++ runtime files, including msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll. Obtain those through the original application installer or an authorized vendor deployment package. Installing the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is not guaranteed to provide those legacy files.

To check whether Windows is loading a different copy:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter cmd.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
where pbvm100.dll

If several paths appear, duplicate copies may be confusing the application. Do not delete files blindly. Record the paths and have the application vendor identify which runtime directory should be used.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

pbvm100.dll is a 32-bit runtime. A 32-bit PowerBuilder application can run on 64-bit Windows, but the application and its native dependencies must remain compatible.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Check System type.

A 64-bit version of Windows is not itself a problem. The important issue is whether the application is using its complete 32-bit runtime set.

Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into the application folder to replace a 32-bit file. Do not move the file between unrelated PowerBuilder installations. A runtime from a different version or build can cause a new startup failure even if the filename is identical.

If the application was moved from another computer, reinstall it rather than copying its executable and one DLL. Older PowerBuilder deployments often require several files and configuration details that are not obvious from the application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and Windows security blocks

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

An antivirus product may quarantine a legitimate old runtime because it is unusual, unsigned, or located in an unexpected folder. The detection alone does not prove that the file is malware.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent actions involving the affected application or pbvm100.dll.
  5. Confirm the file’s path and source.
  6. Restore it only if it came from the original installer or an authorized vendor package.
  7. Run a repair or reinstall afterward if several runtime files were removed.

If another security product is installed, open its quarantine or detection history instead.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party PowerBuilder runtime. Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged system features, repeated component errors, or several unrelated applications failing.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run this command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the same commands once more, then repair or reinstall the PowerBuilder application.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is a missing vendor runtime. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the application points to a driver problem

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

Graphics, printer, database, or hardware drivers are not normal causes of a missing pbvm100.dll, but an application may fail later because it depends on a damaged device or database driver.

Use Device Manager only when the program’s own documentation or error log identifies a device-related problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Printers, or Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Do not uninstall unrelated devices while troubleshooting this DLL. If the driver update does not change the error, return to the application repair and runtime checks.

Finding the correct driver versions manually can mean checking many devices and repeating failed installations. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; the full version performs driver installation, but it is not a substitute for restoring the correct PowerBuilder runtime.

Do not use regsvr32 for this runtime

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. pbvm100.dll is normally a runtime engine, not a COM component that needs manual registration.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 pbvm100.dll

If it produces an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” that does not mean the DLL is missing. It usually means the file is not meant to be registered. Reinstall the application runtime instead.

Why the error happens

The common causes are:

Cause Correct response
Runtime was never installed Repair or reinstall the application
Runtime files were partially removed Restore the complete vendor package
Wrong PowerBuilder build Obtain the build matching the application
Companion DLL is missing Restore pbshr100.dll, libjcc.dll, libjlog.dll, and related files
Legacy Microsoft runtime is absent Use the application vendor’s approved dependency package
Duplicate DLL is loaded first Trace paths and remove unauthorized copies carefully
Antivirus quarantined files Verify provenance, restore safely, and reinstall if needed
Windows has wider corruption Run DISM, then SFC

If the error remains after reinstalling

Use Microsoft Process Monitor to trace the application startup. Filter by the application executable and look for NAME NOT FOUND results involving:

  • pbvm100.dll
  • pbshr100.dll
  • libjcc.dll
  • libjlog.dll
  • msvcr71.dll
  • msvcp71.dll

The trace can show whether Windows is searching the wrong directory or failing on a dependency. Save the trace and send it to the application vendor with the application version, Windows architecture, installation path, and exact error wording.

FAQ

Is pbvm100.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party PowerBuilder runtime component and should normally be installed by the application that uses it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy it into System32?

Do not. Install the complete matching runtime beside the application or in the vendor-configured shared directory.

Can 64-bit Windows run it?

Yes. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit PowerBuilder application, provided the application and all native dependencies are compatible.

Is the newest PowerBuilder runtime a replacement?

Not automatically. Modern PowerBuilder releases use different runtime naming and files. Use the runtime version and build intended for the older application.

Why is the DLL visible but still reported as missing?

A dependent DLL may be absent, the file may be damaged, Windows may be loading another copy first, or security software may be blocking it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use System Restore?

Only if the failure began immediately after a known change and no application installer or vendor runtime is available. Reinstalling the affected program is usually safer and more direct.
