Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which Autodesk product shows the error: AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, DWG TrueView, Plant 3D, or another AutoCAD-based application
- Whether the message appears at launch, while opening plotter properties, or during plotting
- The exact wording, such as “pc3edit.dll was not found” or “pc3edit.dll could not be loaded”
- Whether the problem started after an update, failed installation, disk cleanup, antivirus scan, or manual deletion
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether more than one Autodesk release is installed
pc3edit.dll is an Autodesk component, not a Windows system file. It belongs to the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem and supports the Plotter Configuration Editor used to modify .pc3 files.
The safest repair is therefore to repair or reinstall the Autodesk product that owns the missing file. Do not download an isolated copy and place it in System32.

What pc3edit.dll does
The file is commonly described as the Autodesk Hardcopy Plotter Configuration Editor DLL. Its role is connected to AutoCAD’s plotting and hardcopy architecture.

The Plotter Configuration Editor works with .pc3 plotter configuration files. Those files can contain settings for:

The file may be installed with AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, DWG TrueView, Plant 3D, or another Autodesk product based on AutoCAD technology. The exact product and installation directory depend on the release, language, edition, and system architecture.
pc3edit.dll is not:
- A Windows component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX file
- A .NET Framework file
- A generic redistributable
- A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32 - A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Older public file inventories mention particular builds, but there is no single version, size, checksum, or path that applies to every Autodesk installation. A 32-bit file must not be substituted for a 64-bit product component, and the reverse is also true.
Recognize the error correctly
Commonly reported Windows-style messages include:
- “This application failed to start because pc3edit.dll was not found.”
- “The file pc3edit.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “pc3edit.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because pc3edit.dll was not found.”
- “pc3edit.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
These messages usually indicate that the Autodesk installation is incomplete, damaged, or unable to load a required dependency.
However, not every AutoCAD plotting error is a DLL error. You may instead see messages such as:
- “[printer name].pc3: This plotter configuration cannot be used”
- “The device specified in the PC3 file cannot be found”
Those messages usually point to a missing printer driver, renamed print server, damaged .pc3 or .pmp file, or an incompatible plotting device. Repairing Windows will not necessarily fix that problem.
Fix 1: Repair the affected Autodesk installation
This is the best first step when the error appears at startup or the file is absent from the Autodesk program directory.
Identify the correct Autodesk product
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for the product named in the error.
- Check for multiple Autodesk entries and note their release names.
Repair the product that is failing. Do not repair whichever AutoCAD entry happens to appear first if several releases are installed.

- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair or Repair or Reinstall.
- Choose Repair if that option is available.
- Allow the process to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the same Autodesk product and repeat the action that produced the error.
A successful repair normally restores missing program files and preserves the installation. If the error remains, repeat the maintenance process and choose Reinstall where available.

Reinstall a newer Autodesk release
Some newer releases do not provide the same traditional repair window. In that case:
- Open Autodesk Access if it is installed.
- Sign in with the account used for the Autodesk product.
- Locate the exact product and release.
- Install the latest available update for that product.
- If updating does not help, uninstall the affected product from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using Autodesk Access or the installer downloaded from the Autodesk account associated with the product.
- Start the product before restoring custom plotter files.
Do not copy pc3edit.dll from another AutoCAD release into the repaired installation. Different releases and product variants can use different files and dependencies.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if:
- The application starts without the DLL message
- Plotter properties open normally
- The Plotter Configuration Editor opens
- Existing
.pc3files can be selected or edited - Plotting reaches the normal printer or plotter dialog
If AutoCAD starts but fails only when a particular plotter is selected, continue with the PC3 and driver steps below.

Fix 2: Install the correct Autodesk update
A failed or incomplete update can leave the application present while removing or damaging one of its supporting files.
- Open Autodesk Access.
- Review updates for the exact Autodesk product and release.
- Install the update intended for that product.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If Autodesk Access is not installed, use the Autodesk Account installer for the product already licensed on the computer. Do not combine files from different AutoCAD generations, language editions, or architectures.
If the update fails repeatedly, uninstall and reinstall the affected product rather than attempting to repair the DLL manually.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a file after an installation, update, or later security scan. The filename alone does not prove whether the file is safe or malicious.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time
pc3edit.dlldisappeared. - Expand a relevant detection and examine its path and details.
- Restore the file only if it is inside the legitimate Autodesk installation, has the expected Autodesk publisher information, and the computer is not showing signs of infection.
- Run a full security scan before launching AutoCAD again.

If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not permanently exclude the entire Autodesk directory. First confirm the installation source, digital signature, and security status. If repair restores the file but it disappears again, investigate antivirus events, unauthorized cleanup utilities, disk problems, and malware.
Fix 4: Reset AutoCAD settings and rebuild the PC3 configuration
Use this step when AutoCAD launches but fails while editing plotter settings, opening a specific .pc3 file, or plotting.
Reset the AutoCAD profile
- Back up custom workspaces, aliases, templates, plotter configurations, and other settings.
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Open the Autodesk product folder.
- Select Reset Settings to Default.
- Confirm the reset.
- Start AutoCAD and test plotting.
A damaged user profile can make a valid installation appear broken. Resetting settings does not replace the Autodesk program files, so it will not fix a genuinely missing pc3edit.dll, but it can fix failures caused by corrupted configuration data.

If only one printer or plotter fails:
- Open AutoCAD.
- Open the plotter or printer configuration area.
- Identify the failing
.pc3file. - Back up the original configuration.
- Create a new PC3 configuration for the current printer or plotter.
- Confirm the correct paper sizes, ports, and device settings.
- Test a small drawing.
A PC3 file can become invalid when a printer is renamed, a print server changes, a driver is removed, or a related PMP file is moved. A message about a device not being found is normally a configuration or driver problem, not proof that pc3edit.dll is missing.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the printer driver
Use this step when the DLL error is accompanied by a printer, plotter, device, or port error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test AutoCAD.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain the driver from the printer or plotter manufacturer. Match the driver to the printer model, Windows version, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other apps are also affected
Because pc3edit.dll belongs to Autodesk rather than Windows, Windows component repair is not the primary solution. Use it when several unrelated applications report missing or damaged files, or when Windows itself is behaving abnormally.

Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows. Microsoft documents DISM and SFC repair procedures.
These commands repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not download or reconstruct Autodesk application files. If the scan reports no integrity violations but pc3edit.dll is still missing, return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall step.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, application change, update, or cleanup operation.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore.
System Restore affects system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but save open work and back up important data first. Microsoft provides additional information about System Restore.
After the restore, update or reinstall the affected Autodesk product if the file remains missing.
Why downloading pc3edit.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download websites and file-sharing pages. An isolated DLL can be:
- Modified or infected
- From the wrong Autodesk release
- Built for the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing related dependencies
- Incompatible with the installed product
- Unable to fix a damaged PC3 configuration or printer driver
Never copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 to bypass an Autodesk error. The safe source is the official Autodesk installer for the exact product and release. If antivirus quarantined the file, validate the existing Autodesk installation before restoring it.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. Microsoft describes it as a utility for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

There is no verified reason to manually register pc3edit.dll. Running:

may produce another error, especially if the Command Prompt is in the wrong directory or the DLL is not a self-registering component. It does not restore a deleted file, repair an Autodesk installation, or rebuild a broken PC3 configuration. Microsoft’s reference for regsvr32 explains when the command applies.
What to collect if the error continues
If repair and reinstall do not resolve the problem, record:
- Exact Autodesk product name and release
- Exact error text
- The full path where Windows expects or finds
pc3edit.dll - Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether multiple Autodesk releases are installed
- Whether the error occurs at launch or only during plotting
- Recent antivirus detections
- Recent update, driver, cleanup, or installation activity
- Any related
.pc3, printer, or device error
Use those details when contacting Autodesk support. They help distinguish a missing application component from a damaged profile, incompatible printer driver, or broken plotter configuration.

Not as the first response. pc3edit.dll is an Autodesk application DLL, not a Visual C++ or DirectX component. Install those runtimes only when the actual error identifies them.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Do not do so. The other computer may have a different Autodesk release, language edition, update level, or architecture. Repair or reinstall the correct product instead.
Does AutoCAD LT use pc3edit.dll?
An AutoCAD-based product may use related hardcopy and plotting components, but the exact files vary by product and release. Repair the product named in the error rather than assuming every Autodesk installation contains the same build.
Why does AutoCAD open if pc3edit.dll is missing?

Usually not. Enabling unrelated Windows Features does not restore an Autodesk application DLL. Use Autodesk repair or reinstall, then investigate PC3 files and printer drivers if plotting still fails.
What is the safest fix?
