What this file actually does
pdfxeditcore.x64.dll is the 64-bit PDF-XChange Editor Core API library from Tracker Software Products (Canada) Ltd. It is associated with PDF-XChange Editor and the PDF-XChange Editor SDK, not with Windows itself.
The x64 suffix means that the library is intended for a 64-bit application. A 32-bit program normally needs PDFXEditCore.x86.dll instead. The correct file must match the architecture of the executable calling it.
This file may be installed with PDF-XChange Editor, PDF-Tools, PDF-XChange PRO, an older PDF-XChange product, or a separate business application whose developer integrated the PDF-XChange Editor SDK. The correct repair therefore depends on which executable displays the error.

Cause-by-symptom table
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when PDF-XChange Editor starts | Damaged, incomplete, or outdated PDF-XChange installation | Update, repair, or reinstall PDF-XChange Editor |
| A company, scanner, document, or workflow app reports the error | Incomplete SDK deployment | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency of the DLL may be missing | Check application logs and required runtimes |
| The problem began after antivirus activity | The DLL may have been quarantined | Review Windows Security Protection history |
| The error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, wrong architecture, incompatibility, or tampering | Remove the installation and use a fresh official installer |
| The error started after an update or backup restore | Files may be from mixed product builds | Reinstall the parent application as one package |
| A 32-bit program is trying to load the x64 file | Architecture mismatch | Install the application’s correct x86 deployment |
Fix PDF-XChange Editor or the calling application
1. Restart Windows and identify the program
Close the error and restart Windows. This clears an interrupted installer, pending file replacement, or locked process.
Then note the exact program that fails:
- PDF-XChange Editor
- PDF-Tools or another PDF-XChange product
- A document-management, scanning, accounting, or workflow application
- A custom application using the PDF-XChange Editor SDK
If the error appears only in one application, repair that application first. Installing PDF-XChange Editor separately will not necessarily repair a third-party SDK deployment.
Also check whether the failure began after an update, uninstall, disk cleanup, backup restore, antivirus change, or moving a portable installation. These events can remove the DLL or leave the executable, DLLs, and resources from different builds.
2. Update PDF-XChange Editor
If PDF-XChange Editor itself is the affected program:
- Open PDF-XChange Editor.
- Select Help.
- Choose Check for Updates.
- Install the offered update.
- Restart Windows and test the program again.
The updater is also associated with:
C:Program FilesPDF-XChangeUpdaterPXCUpdater.exe
The path can differ in customized or older installations, so do not assume that location proves the file is missing.
If the editor cannot open, download a fresh PDF-XChange Editor installer from Tracker Software’s official product downloads page. Use the installer format appropriate for the existing deployment. The vendor provides both EXE and MSI installation packages.
Run the installer over the existing installation when supported. If it offers Repair, choose that option. Otherwise, uninstall the damaged product, restart Windows, and install a fresh copy from the official vendor source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A successful repair should restore the program’s own files in its application directory and allow the same executable to start without the DLL message.
3. Repair a third-party SDK application
If a custom or business application displays the error, repair or reinstall that application instead of copying files from a separate PDF-XChange Editor installation.
The application developer must deploy:
- The correct x64 core library for a 64-bit executable
PDFXEditCore.x86.dllinstead when the caller is 32-bitResources.datwhere required- Matching language folders, plugins, manifests, and other SDK files
Ask the developer or system administrator which executable is failing and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 64-bit Windows installation does not make every application 64-bit.
For a managed MSI installation, Windows Installer supports repair with the /f option. The exact MSI package or product code must be known, so do not guess a command from an unrelated installation. Use the organization’s deployment package or have its administrator run the documented repair command against the correct MSI.

Windows Security may quarantine a file after an update or installation.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
pdfxeditcore.x64.dllor the affected application. - Check the file path and detection details.
Do not automatically restore or allow the file. Restore it only when you can verify that it came from the official signed PDF-XChange installer or a trusted installation of the application.

If the origin is uncertain, remove the application, run a Windows Security scan, download a fresh official installer, and reinstall it. This is safer than allowing an unfamiliar DLL merely because its filename matches the error.
Check for an architecture or dependency problem
Confirm x86 versus x64
The calling executable determines which DLL it can load:
Recommended Free Tools
- A 64-bit executable needs the x64 library.
- A 32-bit executable needs the x86 library.
- Installing both files in random folders does not correct a badly packaged application.
If the program is supplied by another developer, ask for its supported architecture. If the file exists but Windows reports that it cannot load, compare the executable and DLL architectures using the developer’s deployment diagnostics or application logs.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate a damaged file, an architecture mismatch, an incompatible build, or a modified file. It is not proof that Windows itself is missing a system DLL.
Distinguish the DLL from its dependencies
“Specified module could not be found” is ambiguous. Windows can display that message when the named DLL exists but one of its dependencies does not.
Check:
- The application’s own log files.
- Windows Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application.
- The developer’s dependency diagnostic, if this is an SDK application.
- Whether the reinstall placed all companion files beside the executable.
A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime can sometimes be a missing dependency. Install it only when the application logs or dependency check points to it:
- Open Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the architecture matching the calling application.
- Install the package.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
The x64 and x86 runtime packages can coexist because different programs may require different architectures. The runtime is a secondary diagnostic step, not the default explanation for every pdfxeditcore.x64.dll error.
Repair Windows components only when Windows is also unstable
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party PDF-XChange DLL, so run them when you also have damaged Windows features, repeated system errors, or an application reinstall that fails unexpectedly.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that repairs completed, and broader Windows symptoms improve. If the DLL error remains but Windows is otherwise healthy, reinstall the parent application rather than repeating these commands.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed becomes the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the PDF-XChange application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck Windows Features only for a broader application issue
Windows Features is not a normal installation source for pdfxeditcore.x64.dll. Do not enable random features hoping the file will appear.
If the affected application explicitly requires a Windows component:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Enable only the feature identified by the application documentation.
- Select OK and restart if requested.
If no documented feature is involved, return to the application installer and its required runtimes.
Consider System Restore as a last resort
Use System Restore only if the failure began after a system change and a suitable restore point predates it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Choose Open System Restore.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
You can also run:
rstrui.exe
System Restore may roll back application changes, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged PDF-XChange or SDK application.

Avoid unsafe DLL fixes
Do not download pdfxeditcore.x64.dll from a random DLL archive. A loose download can contain malware, belong to the wrong product build, use the wrong architecture, or omit Resources.dat and other files the application needs. It can also conceal the real problem, such as quarantine, a broken update, or a missing runtime.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. The vendor’s deployment model places the library with the application, and the calling architecture must match.
Do not run:
regsvr32 pdfxeditcore.x64.dll
regsvr32 calls a DLL registration entry point. It is appropriate only when the vendor specifically requires COM self-registration. It is not a general repair for an ordinary missing or unloadable PDF-XChange application library.
Manual replacement is reasonable only for a developer rebuilding a controlled SDK deployment from a verified vendor package. End users should repair the application that owns the file.
Drivers and graphics-related symptoms
A driver update will not normally recreate a missing PDF-XChange library. However, if the PDF application also crashes during rendering, hardware acceleration, printing, or display initialization, check the relevant drivers separately.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Printers, or the device category named in the application error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If several devices are stale, manually identifying the correct versions can take time and may lead to the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns pdfxeditcore.x64.dll.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Record these details before contacting support:
- The exact executable that fails
- Whether that executable is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full path where the application expects the DLL
- File Properties > Details information for any remaining copy
- The PDF-XChange or application version shown in its About screen
- Your Windows version
- The complete error wording
- Relevant Event Viewer entries
- Whether
Resources.dat, language folders, and plugins are present for an SDK deployment - The steps immediately before the failure began
Contact Tracker Software for a PDF-XChange product problem. Contact the developer or vendor of the business application when it uses the PDF-XChange SDK, because that developer controls the packaged DLLs, resources, architecture, and installer.
FAQ
Is pdfxeditcore.x64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the PDF-XChange Editor Core API and is supplied through PDF-XChange or an application using its SDK.
Should I install both x86 and x64 copies?
No. Use the variant required by the calling executable. A 32-bit application needs the x86 library, even on 64-bit Windows.
Where should the file go?
Normally beside the PDF-XChange application or the customer application using the SDK, with required companion files such as Resources.dat. The exact directory varies by product and deployment.
Will SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not arbitrary third-party application files.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the DLL is present?
A dependency of pdfxeditcore.x64.dll may be missing. Check logs and install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when dependency evidence identifies it.
Can I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Not as a generic fix. Use registration only when the vendor’s specific deployment instructions require it.
What is the safest first fix?
Identify the program that reports the error, then update, repair, or reinstall that program from its official vendor installer.
