pdrecorder.dll Errors: Rebuild the CyberLink Installation

pdrecorder.dll is a CyberLink application component, not a normal Windows system file. When Windows reports that pdrecorder.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the CyberLink program that originally installed it.

Do not download a loose copy from a DLL website or copy it into System32. The correct file must match the CyberLink product, application architecture, dependencies, and build.

What pdrecorder.dll belongs to

Public file metadata identifies pdrecorder.dll as PDRecorder, associated with Cyberlink Corp. PDRecorder. The name suggests a recording or capture component, but it does not identify the exact CyberLink product or release installed on your computer.

CyberLink products that include recording or capture features may be involved, including products in the PowerDirector, Screen Recorder, Power2Go, and PowerDVD families. CyberLink documentation confirms that PowerDirector includes screen recording and capture workflows, but that does not prove that every PowerDirector release contains this DLL.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

CyberLink does not currently publish an authoritative public file manifest, checksum, version table, or standalone download page for pdrecorder.dll. The exact version, size, bitness, and installation path therefore need to be determined from your own installation.

pdrecorder.dll is not established as a Windows component. There is no verified reason to expect it in either of these folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

It normally belongs in the application directory of the CyberLink program that supplied it.

Error messages you may see

Windows may display wording such as:

  • pdrecorder.dll was not found
  • The code execution cannot proceed because pdrecorder.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
  • The program can't start because pdrecorder.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
  • pdrecorder.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

These are standard Windows loader message patterns. The text alone does not identify which CyberLink product is damaged.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the CyberLink application

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

This is the most likely solution because it restores the DLL, its related files, the expected installation path, and matching dependencies together.

Identify the affected program first

  1. Read the full error window and note the application name.
  2. Check the shortcut you used to start the program.
  3. Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
  4. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
  5. Note any CyberLink product name shown in the path.
  6. Open Settings.
  7. Select Apps.
  8. On Windows 11, open Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Apps & features.
  9. Search for CyberLink.
  10. Write down every installed CyberLink product and its displayed version.

If the error appears while launching a game or another launcher, identify that program instead. A bundled CyberLink component may have been installed with the application.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. In Installed apps or Apps & features, select the affected CyberLink product.
  2. Select Advanced options if Windows provides it.
  3. Choose Repair.
  4. If the product has a separate maintenance window, choose Modify or Repair there.
  5. Allow the process to complete.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the same CyberLink application again.

If the program starts normally, the repair restored the missing component. Do not copy another DLL into the application folder after a successful repair.

Reinstall from an official source

If repair is unavailable or the error remains:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select the affected CyberLink product.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows when the uninstall finishes.
  5. Reinstall the same product using its original installer, CyberLink Application Manager, or the download channel associated with your CyberLink account.
  6. Choose the same product edition and a matching architecture when the installer provides that choice.
  7. Run the installer as administrator if it cannot write to the application directory.
  8. Restart Windows after setup completes.
  9. Launch the application from its normal shortcut.

Use a complete installer rather than copying only pdrecorder.dll. A mixed collection of files from different CyberLink releases can cause entry-point, compatibility, or “not designed to run on Windows” errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you no longer have the installer, use CyberLink’s official downloads or support channel. Do not use a third-party DLL archive as a substitute.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update, repair, or scan. Do not immediately disable protection or restore the file without checking its origin.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Look for an entry whose original path points to the CyberLink installation directory.
  6. Expand the detection and record the detection name, original path, and publisher information.
  7. If the file came from a legitimate CyberLink installation, run a current scan of the installer and application folder.
  8. Restore or allow the file only when you have verified its source and the scan is clean.
  9. Reopen the CyberLink application.

If Defender quarantines the file again, do not repeatedly turn off protection. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall from CyberLink’s official channel. If the detection continues, contact CyberLink or Microsoft with the detection name and original path.

A file copied from an untrusted source should not be restored merely because it has the right filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check the application architecture and installation path

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit CyberLink programs. The operating system’s architecture does not prove that the application or its DLL is 64-bit.

  1. Return to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Check the CyberLink product name and version information.
  3. Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location.
  4. In the application folder, search for pdrecorder.dll.
  5. If it exists, right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
  7. Record the full path, file description, product name, and signer information.
  8. Do not move the file to another folder.
  9. Do not replace it with a file from another CyberLink product or release.

If the DLL exists but the application still fails, the problem may be a damaged dependent file, an incompatible build, or an incorrect application path. Reinstall the complete CyberLink product rather than replacing the individual file.

If an installer offers x86 and x64 choices, use the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit CyberLink program generally needs 32-bit dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Fix 4: Repair a prerequisite runtime only when indicated

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

There is no reliable public evidence that pdrecorder.dll specifically requires a particular Visual C++ Redistributable. Install or repair a runtime only when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The CyberLink installer identifies it as a prerequisite.
  • The error also names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or another runtime file.
  • The CyberLink documentation for your product requires it.

Microsoft provides current Visual C++ packages for x86, x64, and ARM64 systems:

To repair a package:

  1. Download the architecture required by the CyberLink application.
  2. Run the installer.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Choose Repair if that option appears.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Launch CyberLink again.

Do not uninstall older Visual C++ packages indiscriminately. Microsoft supports side-by-side installations, and older packages can be required by unrelated applications.

Repairing Visual C++ will not recreate pdrecorder.dll itself. If the named DLL is absent, repair or reinstall CyberLink.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They normally do not restore a missing third-party CyberLink DLL. Use them when several unrelated programs fail, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or Windows shows broader signs of corruption.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the CyberLink application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source.

Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain the supported repair process.

Repeating these commands will not replace a missing CyberLink file. If SFC reports that it repaired files but the CyberLink error remains, reinstall the owning CyberLink application.

Running DISM and SFC manually means waiting through scans and determining which Windows component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling CyberLink remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the wider capture problem points there

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

A graphics, audio, webcam, or capture-device driver can cause recording features to fail, but a driver reinstall is not a confirmed replacement for pdrecorder.dll. Use this step when the DLL error is accompanied by missing capture devices, display problems, crashes during recording, or Device Manager warnings.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Cameras.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and read the device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained from the device or PC manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the CyberLink application.

Do not remove a working driver merely because pdrecorder.dll is missing. Reinstall CyberLink first.

Finding the correct graphics, audio, webcam, and capture drivers by hand can mean checking several hardware models and package versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the CyberLink application.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only for a related application error

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Windows optional features are not a normal source of pdrecorder.dll. Do not enable random features in an attempt to create the missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check them only if the CyberLink installer or its documentation specifically names a Windows component:

Why regsvr32 pdrecorder.dll is usually wrong

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair utility. It calls registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, and many ordinary application DLLs do not provide those entry points.

Do not run:

regsvr32 pdrecorder.dll

unless CyberLink’s own instructions for your exact product explicitly require it. A typical result for an ordinary non-registration DLL is an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registration will not restore a deleted file, fix a mismatched CyberLink build, or install missing dependencies.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A loose DLL download can be:

  • The wrong CyberLink release.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Missing its required companion files.
  • Modified or malicious.
  • Unsigned or signed by an unexpected publisher.
  • Placed in a folder that the application never searches.

It can also hide the original cause, such as an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, disk damage, or a failed uninstall.

Use the original CyberLink installer, CyberLink Application Manager, or CyberLink’s official account and support channels. Restore the complete application rather than obtaining pdrecorder.dll separately.

Causes of the error and the matching fix

Likely cause What to do
Incomplete or damaged CyberLink installation Repair or reinstall the exact CyberLink product
Mixed CyberLink versions Remove the affected product and install one complete matching build
Antivirus quarantine Inspect Protection History and verify the original path and publisher
Missing prerequisite runtime Repair the runtime named by setup or the error
Disk cleanup or manual deletion Reinstall CyberLink
Interrupted update or installer Run the original installer again as administrator
Old system image or PC migration Install the product cleanly on the current system
Disk, profile, or permissions problem Test another profile and check whether setup can write to the installation drive
Malware or counterfeit installer Run a full scan and reinstall from CyberLink

Malware is possible, but a missing DLL alone does not establish that malware caused the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling still does not work

Collect these details before contacting CyberLink support:

  1. The exact application name and edition.
  2. The complete error text.
  3. The full path shown in the error, if present.
  4. Your Windows version and system architecture.
  5. The CyberLink product version.
  6. Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, migration, or antivirus detection.
  7. Whether pdrecorder.dll exists anywhere in the application folder.
  8. The file’s Details and Digital Signatures information.
  9. Any Protection History detection name.
  10. The result of the CyberLink repair or reinstall.
  11. Any installer or Event Viewer error that appeared during setup.

You can also test the program from another Windows user profile. If it works there, the original profile may have a permissions or application-data problem. If the installation drive reports errors, resolve those before repeatedly reinstalling.

FAQ

Is pdrecorder.dll a Windows file?

No verified evidence shows that it ships with Windows. Treat it as a CyberLink application component, not a protected Windows DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does it definitely belong to PowerDirector?

Public metadata identifies the component as Cyberlink Corp. PDRecorder, but it does not establish a particular PowerDirector version. Check the installed CyberLink files and product before naming the exact owner.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Restore it to the CyberLink application directory through repair or reinstallation. There is no verified evidence that Windows owns this file.

Will installing Visual C++ fix it?

Only if a required runtime is missing or separately named by the installer or error. Visual C++ does not replace pdrecorder.dll.

Can I register it with regsvr32?

Usually not. Ordinary application DLLs may not expose DllRegisterServer. Use CyberLink repair or reinstallation instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the DLL exists but Windows still reports an error?

The file may be damaged, incompatible, blocked, or missing a dependency. Record its path and signature, then reinstall the complete matching CyberLink product.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the CyberLink application, repair it, and then reinstall it from CyberLink’s official installer or support channel if repair fails.
