What pds.dll means
pds.dll is a product-dependent third-party DLL, not a standard Windows system file. The pds.dll error usually means that an application cannot find, load, or use the copy installed with its own software.
The strongest current match is Ivanti Endpoint Manager, also known as LANDesk. Ivanti documentation describes PDS as its ping discovery service, used by the standard Ivanti agent for device discovery and communication with the Endpoint Manager server. Older Microsoft Project Server 2002 and 2003 installations also used a file named Pds.dll.

There is no verified universal pds.dll download that is suitable for every computer. The correct repair is to identify the program that requested the file, then repair or reinstall that complete product.
Do not copy a DLL from a random download site into C:WindowsSystem32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, or leave the real application damage unresolved.

Fix 1: Identify the program and file path
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Start with the error message. Record:
- The full text of the error
- The name of the application that displayed it
- The executable named in the message, if shown
- The complete path mentioned for
pds.dll - Whether the problem occurs at startup, when opening a program, or when connecting to a server
The path is more useful than the filename alone.
Check the application path
If the error appears when launching an application:
- Close the error message.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
Look for pds.dll in the same application directory or in a subfolder used by the program. If the file is present, the problem may be a missing dependency, an incompatible file, a blocked file, or a damaged installation rather than a missing DLL.
Check common ownership clues
Use these clues to choose the correct repair route:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Location or context | Most likely owner | Correct first action |
|---|---|---|
| Ivanti or LANDesk agent folder | Ivanti Endpoint Manager agent | Redeploy or repair the approved agent |
System32 or SysWOW64 on an Ivanti-managed computer |
Possibly an Ivanti deployment | Verify publisher and associated service before changing anything |
Microsoft Office Project Server BIN directory |
Project Server 2002 or 2003 | Use the matching legacy product repair or update |
| An unrelated application folder | That application | Repair or reinstall that exact application |
| A startup error after software removal | Orphaned service or startup entry | Use the removed product’s supported cleanup procedure |
A pds.dll file in System32 does not prove that Microsoft Windows owns it. Ivanti deployments can place components in Windows directories.
Check file properties
If a copy of the file exists:
- Right-click
pds.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- On the Details tab, record the file description, product name, and version information.
- On the General tab, check whether Windows shows an Unblock option. If it does, use that only when the file came from a trusted, approved installer.
Do not use a file merely because its name matches. The version, architecture, signature, location, and owning product must agree.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the Ivanti agent
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
This is the most likely route on a corporate or managed computer, particularly if the error began after an Ivanti agent update, deployment, cleanup operation, system-image restore, or antivirus event.
Ivanti Endpoint Manager manifests identify pds.dll as part of the Endpoint Manager software. The documented file entry is associated with the PDS component, but the manifest does not make the DLL a general Windows component or provide a universal standalone download.

Do this with your organization’s Ivanti administrator or approved management process:
- Open the Ivanti Endpoint Manager console.
- Locate the affected device.
- Open the organization’s approved standard agent configuration.
- Choose the action used for repair, redeploy, or reinstall agent.
- Target only the affected device first.
- Allow the deployment to complete.
- Restart Windows if the console or installer requests it.
- Test the application or agent function that produced the error.
Newer engine-based Ivanti agents may provide repair and health actions through the Endpoint Manager administration tools. The exact labels depend on the installed Endpoint Manager release and your organization’s configuration.
Do not download a replacement DLL and add it to a managed computer outside the organization’s software-deployment process. A complete agent package restores the file and its related services, configuration, permissions, and dependencies together.
If you administer the computer locally
Use the Ivanti installation package supplied by your organization:

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Obtain the approved agent installer from the Endpoint Manager administrator or internal software portal.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose the repair or reinstall option if offered.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall and redeploy the agent only according to your organization’s procedure.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the Ivanti agent service starts and that the device checks in normally.
If the file returns but the error remains, record the executable path and the complete error text. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that another DLL required by pds.dll is missing.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may quarantine or delete a legitimate vendor file after an update or a change in detection rules.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry that identifies
pds.dllor the associated Ivanti, Project Server, or application directory. - Check the detected path carefully.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The path belongs to the known product installation.
- The file came from an approved product package.
- Its digital signature and file details match the approved package.
- Your security administrator confirms that restoration is safe.
If you restore it:
- Restore the item from Protection history.
- Do not disable antivirus protection.
- Repair or redeploy the complete application or Ivanti agent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run a new scan.
- Test the application.
If the security product identifies the file as malicious or the signature does not match, do not restore it. Quarantine details, the file path, detection name, product version, and event time should be supplied to the software vendor and security administrator.

Windows app repair
For a program installed through Windows settings:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the program entry and select Reset only if you understand that it can remove the program’s settings or local data.
Desktop program repair
For a traditional desktop application:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the program.
If repair is not offered:
- Download the current installer from the application developer’s official support or download channel.
- Back up application data and settings first.
- Uninstall the damaged application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the approved package.
- Apply the application’s updates.
- Test the program before restoring optional plugins or extensions.
Reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix when that application supplied pds.dll.
Fix 5: Repair an old Microsoft Project Server installation
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
Microsoft Project Server 2002 and 2003 used Pds.dll in the Project Server BIN directory. This is a legacy product-specific case and should not be handled like a missing Windows DLL.
If the error points to a path similar to the Microsoft Office Project Server BIN directory:
- Identify the exact Project Server release and service-pack level.
- Check the server’s installation media and internal software archive.
- Apply the matching supported service pack, hotfix, or product repair.
- Use the same architecture and patch level as the existing installation.
- Restart the relevant Project Server services.
- Test the site and the operation that originally failed.
Do not copy Pds.dll from a modern Windows computer. Do not substitute a file from an unrelated application. If a controlled recovery procedure uses files from a working Project Server installation, the source and destination must match in product version, architecture, patch level, signature, and installation path.
Because these Project Server versions are old, involve the organization’s Microsoft administrator or application vendor before changing a production server.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and dependent DLL issues
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A 32-bit program normally requires the matching 32-bit build of its application files. A 64-bit program requires compatible 64-bit files and dependencies. Do not choose between System32 and SysWOW64 based on internet instructions:
- On 64-bit Windows,
System32normally contains 64-bit system components. - On 64-bit Windows,
SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system components.
The correct location depends on the owning product’s installer. Ivanti manifests list pds.dll alongside other product files, including separately identified 64-bit companion files, so the DLL’s architecture cannot safely be inferred from its name.
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
To check the program architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the failing process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Platform is not available, inspect the application’s official documentation or installer rather than guessing.
The message “The specified module could not be found” may mean that pds.dll exists but one of its dependent DLLs is missing. In that situation:
- Do not copy random dependencies into the application folder.
- Run the owning product’s repair installer.
- Check the application’s installation log.
- Review Event Viewer for entries at the time of failure.
- Ask the vendor for its dependency-diagnostic procedure.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a verified general solution for pds.dll. Install a runtime only when the owning application specifically requires it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows corruption
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party Ivanti, Project Server, or application DLL.
Use them when Windows itself shows broader corruption, Windows-protected files are failing, or the problem affects multiple built-in components.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and the application again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, save the result and repair the owning application separately.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM while guessing which component is damaged can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan to show what it finds, while repair features require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns pds.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the error points to a device or driver package
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A driver update is not the normal fix for an application-owned pds.dll. Use this step when the error appears with a device-management application, hardware utility, or driver installer.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware vendor provides an approved package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Do not remove a device or driver merely because pds.dll is missing. If the application’s official installer contains its own driver package, repair or reinstall that application instead.
Tracking which of many installed drivers is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing detected driver issues, while driver installation requires the full version; use it optionally and prefer the hardware or application vendor’s approved package when available.

Time needed: 2 to 5 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool. It applies to DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point required by Windows.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Most missing runtime or helper DLLs do not need registration. Running a command such as this against an arbitrary pds.dll is unlikely to fix the problem:
regsvr32 pds.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result usually means the DLL is not designed for COM registration, not that Windows needs another copy.
Use regsvr32 only when the product’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file and identifies the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command. Otherwise, use the owning product’s repair installer.

Fix 10: Remove an orphaned startup entry after intentional removal
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
If the pds.dll error began after uninstalling Ivanti, another management product, or an application, Windows may still be trying to start an old service or scheduled task.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not install the DLL merely to silence the message.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Confirm that the old product is actually removed.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an entry belonging to that product.
- Open services.msc and look for a service clearly belonging to the removed product.
- Do not delete or disable a service until its owner is confirmed.
- Use the product’s supported uninstaller or vendor cleanup procedure.
- Restart Windows.
On a managed computer, ask the IT administrator to remove the stale agent or service through the management console.
When System Restore or a full reinstall is justified
System Restore is reasonable when:
- The error began immediately after a known software change.
- A restore point exists from before the change.
- Repairing the owning product is not possible.
- You understand that applications, drivers, and settings installed after that restore point may be affected.
To open it:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore.
A full product reinstall is justified when repair fails, files are repeatedly removed, installation permissions are damaged, or the product’s service and dependencies are inconsistent. Back up data and settings first, then use the official installer.
Likely causes of a pds.dll error
The most common explanations are:
- An incomplete or damaged Ivanti/LANDesk agent
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- A failed application installation or update
- Removal of management software that left a startup entry
- Missing dependent DLLs
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
- A damaged legacy Project Server installation
- Corruption in Windows components
- A blocked file or invalid digital signature
- A different third-party application that happens to use the same filename
Malware is possible for any unexpected file event, but the filename alone does not establish that malware caused the error.

What to send support if it still fails
Give Ivanti, Microsoft Project Server support, or the application vendor:
- The complete error text
- The failing executable name and full path
- The full
pds.dllpath - The application and product version
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- File Properties details and signature status
- Recent updates, uninstallations, image restores, or cleanup operations
- Antivirus quarantine and detection history
- Relevant Event Viewer entries
- Results from the product repair or reinstall
- DISM and SFC results, if you ran them
This information lets support identify the owning product and its dependency chain instead of sending you an unrelated DLL.
FAQ
Is pds.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence establishes pds.dll as a Windows inbox component. It is a product-dependent DLL associated most strongly with Ivanti Endpoint Manager and, historically, Microsoft Project Server.
Can I download pds.dll and copy it to System32?
Do not do that. A filename is not enough to determine the correct version, architecture, signature, or installation directory. Repair the application that owns the file.
Does pds.dll belong to Ivanti?
Often, particularly on a managed corporate computer, but not always. Older Microsoft Project Server installations also used Pds.dll, and another application may use the same filename.
Should I run regsvr32 pds.dll?
Usually no. Run it only when the owning vendor specifically requires COM registration for that DLL.
Will SFC fix pds.dll?
Only if the file is genuinely a Windows-protected component, which is not established here. SFC normally will not restore an Ivanti, Project Server, or other third-party application DLL.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when pds.dll exists?
The message can refer to a dependency required by pds.dll, not necessarily to pds.dll itself. Use the owning product’s repair installer and dependency diagnostics.
