PEGI uses age numbers; ESRB uses age categories. Their content descriptors and treatment of online features also differ, so a PEGI rating cannot be reliably converted into an ESRB rating—or vice versa. For a specific game, check the rating shown in the market where it is sold, read the descriptors, and review its online and purchase features.
What PEGI and ESRB ratings tell you
Both systems offer an age-suitability signal alongside information about content. Neither age mark is a complete inventory of everything in a game. PEGI uses descriptor icons and text to explain content elements and interactive risks. ESRB content descriptors identify material that may have contributed to a rating or may matter to consumers, but ESRB says they are not intended as a complete listing. Read the definitions used by the system on the game’s label rather than assuming that a matching descriptor means the same thing in both systems.
The rating concerns content, not how difficult a game is to play. PEGI explicitly says its rating considers age suitability, not difficulty. A game suitable for a child by content may still be challenging, while a game that is easy to play can carry an adult rating because of its content. PEGI’s label guide explains its categories and descriptors.
How the age categories compare
PEGI’s scale uses five minimum-age labels. ESRB’s scale uses five age categories, plus Rating Pending in a limited promotional context. The systems describe suitability differently, so apparent age similarities are not a conversion chart.

| PEGI label | PEGI meaning | ESRB category | ESRB meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| PEGI 3 | Suitable for all ages. | Everyone | Generally suitable for all ages. |
| PEGI 7 | May include potentially frightening material or very mild violence. | Everyone 10+ | Generally suitable for ages 10 and up. |
| PEGI 12 | May include somewhat more graphic fantasy or non-realistic violence, or mild sexual innuendo. | Teen | Generally suitable for ages 13 and up. |
| PEGI 16 | May include violence or sexual activity approaching real-life depiction, stronger language or substance use. | Mature 17+ | Generally suitable for ages 17 and up. |
| PEGI 18 | May include adult-level material such as gross violence, glamorized illegal drugs, simulated gambling or explicit sexual activity. | Adults Only 18+ | Suitable only for adults ages 18 and up. |
| No equivalent category | Not applicable. | Rating Pending | A final ESRB rating has not yet been assigned. ESRB describes this as a promotional label for a physical game expected to receive an ESRB rating, not a final category. |
These descriptions are broad category guidance, not a direct mapping. For example, PEGI 12 and ESRB Teen may look close by age, but their criteria and rating outcomes are not identical. Check the actual regional package or storefront listing and the full descriptors for the game in question. ESRB’s ratings guide defines its categories and labels.
How content descriptors differ
Both systems use descriptors for subjects including violence, language, sexual material, gambling and substances. Similar wording does not guarantee the same threshold or meaning across the systems.
Rank #2
PEGI descriptors
PEGI examples include violence, bad language, fear or horror, gambling, sex, drugs and discrimination. The meaning depends partly on the age category: PEGI distinguishes gambling themes, which may appear at PEGI 12, from simulated casino-style gambling, associated with PEGI 18. Its explanation of violence also changes with the category, from very mild violence at younger levels to more realistic or graphic depictions at older levels.
ESRB content descriptors
ESRB examples include Violence, Fantasy Violence, Intense Violence, Blood, Blood and Gore, Language, Strong Language, Gambling Themes, Real Gambling, Simulated Gambling, Sexual Content, Sexual Violence, Suggestive Themes, and substance references or use. Descriptors are applied in relation to the assigned category; they are not a promise that every content element is listed. When ESRB provides a detailed rating summary, it can offer more context than the short label.
Rank #3
Online features and spending are handled differently
Do not treat an interactive-feature notice as another age category. ESRB separates Interactive Elements from the rating assignment. Its notices can flag in-game purchases, including random items; interaction with other users; location sharing; and unrestricted internet access. ESRB says these features may be of interest or concern but do not influence the product’s rating assignment. The ESRB guide explains these elements.
PEGI also identifies interactive risks, but certain features can affect its rating under rules described as effective since June 2026. PEGI’s current guidance specifies:
- Paid random items submitted since June 2026 are rated PEGI 16, or PEGI 18 for social casino games.
- Time-limited offers can result in PEGI 12; the guidance describes a parental-control condition under which PEGI 7 may apply.
- Unrestricted communication without blocking or muting and moderation is rated PEGI 18.
PEGI’s guidance also includes further text descriptors for paid random items, time-limited offers and cryptocurrency-related features, as well as pressure to play. These are recent, specific rules; check the current PEGI label explanation when evaluating an individual game, because requirements may evolve.

PEGI says its system is used and recognized throughout Europe. ESRB ratings appear on physical games as well as digital games and apps, including VR and online games. For digital games and mobile apps, ESRB is a founding rating authority of IARC, which administers a streamlined rating process. Some non-game apps on IARC storefronts may also carry PEGI ratings. A rating on a listing should therefore be read in its market and format context, not assumed to travel unchanged with a title everywhere. See PEGI’s overview of the system and IARC’s explanation of digital ratings.

How to check a game before a child plays
- Identify the rating system for the market. Look at the physical package or the game’s regional storefront listing. Do not substitute a rating found for another country or edition.
- Use the age category as a first screen. Treat it as suitability guidance, not a guarantee that the game is appropriate for every child or household.
- Read every content descriptor. Use PEGI’s or ESRB’s own explanations; do not infer identical thresholds from similar words.
- Check interactive features separately. Look for online communication, user interaction, user-generated content, spending and purchase mechanics, including random items or timed offers.
- Set the platform’s parental controls. Adjust communication, purchases and access to online features to fit your family’s needs. A rating label does not itself configure those controls.
How often parents check ESRB ratings
ESRB reports that, among U.S. parents with children who play video games, 83% are aware of ESRB ratings and 77% regularly check them before buying. ESRB cites Hart Research Associates for the 2025 figures. No comparable PEGI figure is established here, so these statistics describe ESRB awareness and checking in the U.S.; they do not compare how often parents use the two systems.
