Its Māori developer, Naphtali Faulkner, uses that shift in viewpoint to question who gets to tell history—and what familiar Lovecraftian horror leaves unexamined.
What is Penguin Colony about?
Set in Antarctica in 1939, Penguin Colony reimagines H. P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and other stories through the lives of penguins. Rival human groups arrive in pursuit of an ancient being; players encounter their expedition and its consequences from a place the humans treat as an inhospitable frontier, but that is already home to the penguins.

Origame Digital develops the game, and Fellow Traveller publishes it. The publisher lists Lenval Brown as narrator. Its official game page describes the Lovecraft-inspired premise, while the press kit provides additional official materials. The Steam listing identifies it as a single-player game; check the current store page for availability and release information, since published search results have shown conflicting planned dates.
Why tell cosmic horror from a penguin’s perspective?
Faulkner, a Ngāi Te Rangi developer based in Melbourne, describes the penguin viewpoint as a reversal of the usual expedition story. The Antarctic is not an empty stage waiting for human discovery: it is the penguins’ home, while the explorers are outsiders confronting a place they do not understand.

“The penguin is having a great time because it’s supposed to be there,” Faulkner told ABC Arts. “Antarctica is its home. It’s these European guys who don’t belong there who are having the worst day of their lives.”
That reversal changes the emotional center of the Lovecraftian setup. The visitors may experience the landscape and ancient presence as incomprehensible threats, but the game asks players to notice their own assumptions about who belongs, who has authority, and whose account of a place becomes its history. This is Faulkner’s stated framing of the story, not a claim that the game’s fictional events document Antarctic history.

How does the game connect Lovecraft to colonial myth-making?
Faulkner’s approach is not simply to borrow Lovecraft’s monsters and atmosphere. As reported by ABC Arts, he sees the author’s racism and the assumptions embedded in his stories as part of what makes them disturbing. In his view, the horror lies not only in the unknown but also in the way white characters accept ideas about other peoples without questioning them.

“Most adaptations are trying to scare you with gore or tentacles or otherworldly looking stuff. That’s not the scariest thing about Lovecraft,” Faulkner said. “The scariest thing about Lovecraft is how it makes assumptions about things and all the white characters just nod along with it.”

The game’s human factions pursue relics to support a racial mythology. Faulkner connects that fictional pursuit to colonial myth-making: the construction of stories about the past that can be used to legitimize claims and power. ABC Arts cites “Celtic New Zealand”—a pseudohistorical claim that Anglo settlers preceded Māori—as an example of the kind of narrative he is discussing. That claim is not established history; it illustrates the way invented accounts can be put to political use.
“They just make that [history] up. The game’s story is about exploring how they do this and the tools and mechanisms that allow this colonial myth-making to happen,” Faulkner said.

In this reading, the ancient being and the human search for it are not separate from the politics of the expedition. The story can use cosmic horror to unsettle human certainty while also examining how people manufacture certainty about history, belonging, and authority. The game’s engagement with Lovecraft is critical rather than an endorsement of his racial worldview.

ABC Arts reports that players can control multiple penguins with different capabilities, encounter narrative vignettes, and find objects that may be missed. Wind also acts as a directional cue. Together, those elements point toward an experience built around looking, moving through the environment, and assembling partial encounters rather than collecting a complete, centrally delivered account.

Faulkner links this discovery-oriented design to a respectful-design framework associated with Wiradjuri professor Norman Sheehan. He paraphrases Sheehan’s view of knowledge as something absorbed through engagement with the world:
“Indigenous knowledge says human beings don’t create knowledge between their ears: the thing between their ears is a sponge that sees things out in the world and absorbs them.”
That idea helps explain why not every player is expected to see every vignette or object. Faulkner says he hopes players will recognize that a playthrough can be incomplete while another player’s experience reveals something different:
