What is the difference between the N64 and Xbox versions?
Perfect Dark is a Rare-developed Nintendo 64 game. Nintendo lists its N64 release date as 19 May 2000, while Microsoft lists an Xbox edition and includes it in Rare Replay. The Xbox listing is for the Xbox release, not a Nintendo 64 cartridge running natively on Xbox.

When should you choose the Nintendo 64 version?
Choose it for the original release
If playing the game as an N64 release is the point, the original version is the clear choice. Nintendo lists three difficulty levels—Agent, Secret Agent and Perfect Agent—and configurable controller options. It also describes deathmatch customization and a one-to-four-player range.
Check the Expansion Pak requirement
The Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and three- to four-player multiplayer. One- to two-player deathmatch and Challenge Mode can be played without it. Nintendo’s Perfect Dark page documents the requirement; if you are buying or borrowing the N64 version, confirm you have the accessory before planning to play those modes.

When should you choose the Xbox version?

Microsoft’s listing identifies the Xbox edition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and lists it as part of Rare Replay. The same page currently shows Xbox Cloud Gaming availability; cloud access and subscription language may depend on region, account and plan, and can change. Check the live listing for your location before making a purchase or subscription decision.
Choose it for the enhanced presentation
The store description calls out polished textures. Separately, Xbox Wire’s 2019 backward-compatibility announcement documents Xbox One X enhancements for the Xbox 360 game, including resolution up to 4K Ultra HD, improved texture filtering and color detail. Treat this as an Xbox One X-specific enhancement, not a guarantee of an identical output on every supported Xbox.
Is multiplayer the same on both versions?
No exact mode-by-mode parity is established by the cited official listings. Nintendo describes the N64 version as a one-to-four-player game with customizable deathmatch options; Microsoft describes Xbox multiplayer through Xbox LIVE. Those descriptions are not enough to conclude that the Xbox edition includes every N64 option or behaves identically. If a particular mode or local-versus-online setup matters, verify it for the edition and platform you intend to use.

Pick the Xbox edition if you already play on a current Xbox and value convenient platform support and enhanced presentation. Pick the N64 release if you specifically want the original hardware version and its local multiplayer. For N64 solo missions or three- to four-player modes, make sure an Expansion Pak is available.
