Xbox confirmed on July 2, 2025, that it had stopped development of the Perfect Dark reboot and was closing its developer, The Initiative. A later report said talks intended to continue the game fell apart without a deal. No new publisher or revival has been confirmed in the sources available as of September 2025; that does not mean the wider franchise can never return.
Was the Perfect Dark reboot cancelled?
Yes. On July 2, 2025, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said the company had decided to stop development of Perfect Dark and close The Initiative. Windows Central also reported that the development partnership with Crystal Dynamics would end. Xbox’s statement, reproduced by Pure Xbox, and Windows Central’s report confirm the cancellation and studio closure.

This concerns the reboot in development, not the entire Perfect Dark franchise. The sources establish that this project was cancelled; they do not establish that the franchise has been permanently retired.
Why did Xbox cancel it?
Xbox’s stated reason was a broad reassessment of priorities and resources amid a changing industry landscape. Booty said the decision covered Perfect Dark, Everwild and several unannounced projects, alongside the closure of The Initiative. He did not give a project-specific explanation for Perfect Dark, such as its budget, sales outlook or production status.

Booty also said the choices were not made lightly and recognized the years of work behind the projects and teams. The reproduced statement is the clearest public explanation in the cited coverage; it does not provide a more detailed assessment of the reboot itself.

Did Take-Two try to save Perfect Dark?
According to Bloomberg reporting relayed by Game Informer on September 2, 2025, Embracer Group came close to reaching a deal with Take-Two to purchase the game from Xbox. The report said the talks collapsed at least partly because the parties could not agree on long-term ownership of the Perfect Dark franchise. Game Informer’s account is a report of negotiations, not a public confirmation from Xbox, Take-Two or Embracer.
- The reported talks did not result in a deal.
- Take-Two did not acquire the game, according to the cited report.
- The report does not disclose contract terms or a complete list of reasons the negotiations failed.
It is therefore accurate to say a reported rescue attempt failed, but not that Xbox publicly announced a rights dispute or that a signed sale was later cancelled.
