The short answer
For a newcomer without a strong preference, Persona 5 Royal is the safer default. Atlus presents it as a story-heavy expansion of Persona 5 with an entirely new semester and characters that were not in the original game. That makes it the natural choice for someone seeking the fullest version of the more recent Persona 5 experience.

Persona 3 Reload is the better first game for a specific kind of newcomer: someone who is more interested in its hidden “Shadow Hour,” the S.E.E.S. group and its investigation, or the experience of seeing an earlier Persona story rebuilt with contemporary presentation. SEGA describes Reload as a remake that keeps the original scenario and characters as its foundation while updating graphics, usability, dialogue and voiced material.
These are preference-based recommendations, not a claim that one game is objectively superior. Both official descriptions introduce a different protagonist, cast, setting and supernatural conflict, so there is no required narrative handoff from one to the other.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
Why both games work as a first Persona game
They introduce different casts and conflicts
Persona 3 Reload follows a transfer student at Gekkoukan High who awakens to Persona abilities and joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, usually called S.E.E.S. The group confronts Shadows during a hidden period known as the Shadow Hour. Persona 5 Royal instead follows teenagers who live dual lives as the Phantom Thieves. Those official premises are self-contained starting points rather than chapters that require prior knowledge of the other title.
Starting with either game means learning that game’s terminology, characters and rules in context. You may notice references to the wider Persona identity, but the choice between these two does not depend on completing an earlier numbered entry.
“First” means choosing an experience, not the series chronology
Persona 3 Reload is based on an earlier Persona 3 story, while Persona 5 Royal is an expanded edition of Persona 5. That version history matters when deciding what you are buying, but it does not create a mandatory order. Choose according to the premise and presentation you want to spend your first long campaign with.

Protect the story experience
Both games are story-led role-playing games, and Atlus specifically describes Royal as story-heavy. Avoid searching for late-game character details, endings or explanations before you begin. The safest comparison is the one above: premise, version history, added content and platform fit, without revealing plot developments.
What Persona 3 Reload is
A remake built on Persona 3’s original foundation
Persona 3 Reload is Atlus’s remake of Persona 3. SEGA’s official Japanese product description says the scenario and characters remain the foundation while the graphics and usability are refreshed. The same description identifies added character side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes. In other words, Reload is not presented as a wholly unrelated new story; it is a modern reconstruction of Persona 3’s established one.

- Persona 3 Reload is a captivating reimagining of the genre-defining RPG, reborn for the modern era.
The premise in plain language
You play a transfer student at Gekkoukan High who discovers Persona abilities and joins S.E.E.S. The team investigates Shadows that appear during the hidden Shadow Hour. That setup gives Reload its identity: a school setting, an organized group, a mystery and a supernatural threat that exists outside ordinary daily life.
Who should be pulled toward Reload
- Readers attracted to a darker premise: the official setup emphasizes a hidden hour, monsters called Shadows and an investigation.
- Players curious about an earlier series story: you get Persona 3’s scenario and characters through a remake rather than an unchanged older release.
- Players who value modern presentation applied to a classic: the official description specifically calls out refreshed graphics and usability.
- Players who want added character material: side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes are listed as additions.
What “remake” does and does not tell you
“Remake” describes Reload’s relationship to Persona 3; it does not by itself prove that every feature from every previous Persona 3 edition appears here. Treat the official Reload listing as the authority for the content included in the edition you are considering, and do not assume that an element from another historical release is automatically present.

What Persona 5 Royal is
An expanded Persona 5 experience
Persona 5 Royal is an expanded version of Persona 5. In Atlus’s launch FAQ, Communications Manager Ari Advincula describes it this way: “Persona 5 Royal is a story-heavy game that adds an entirely new semester and new characters never-before experienced in Persona 5.” That sentence is the clearest distinction between Royal and the original Persona 5: Royal adds substantial story content rather than merely repackaging the same release.
The premise in plain language
Atlus’s official description frames the cast as teenagers living dual lives as the Phantom Thieves. That dual-life structure is the central hook to use when deciding whether Royal sounds like your preferred introduction: the game presents an ordinary adolescent world alongside the group’s supernatural activities.
Who should be pulled toward Royal
- Newcomers seeking the most elaborate modern entry: Royal is the expanded Persona 5 package, with an entirely new semester and additional characters.
- Players who want the Phantom Thieves premise: the official description makes their dual lives the defining setup.
- Players who prefer an expanded edition at the starting line: choosing Royal means beginning with the version that includes the later-added story material.
- Players who want a strongly story-led introduction: Atlus explicitly uses “story-heavy” to describe Royal.
Royal’s expansion is a reason to choose it, not a requirement to know Persona 5
You do not need to complete the original Persona 5 before playing Royal. Royal is the expanded Persona 5 experience to select when you are starting now, provided the edition is available on your platform and in your region.

Choose Persona 5 Royal when you want the broadest default recommendation
Pick Royal when your question is simply, “Which one should I buy first if I do not know Persona?” Its expanded-edition status and newly added semester make it the clearest all-purpose recommendation in this comparison. You begin with the Phantom Thieves premise and the version Atlus describes as adding characters and story material beyond Persona 5.
Choose Persona 3 Reload when the premise matters more than the default
Pick Reload if the words Shadow Hour, S.E.E.S. and investigation are more compelling to you than the Phantom Thieves setup. A strong premise preference is enough reason to override the default recommendation; there is no advantage in forcing yourself into the other game first merely because it is the more common starting suggestion.
Choose Reload if you specifically want a remake
Some newcomers want to see how an earlier game is re-created with current presentation. Reload is the relevant choice because its official description foregrounds refreshed graphics, usability improvements and added character-focused material while retaining Persona 3’s scenario and characters.
Choose Royal if you specifically want an expanded edition
If your priority is to start with a version that adds a new semester and new characters to an existing Persona game, Royal directly matches that request. It is not necessary to locate or finish the original Persona 5 first.

Let platform availability break a tie
When both premises appeal equally, the practical answer is the edition you can legally buy and play on your preferred system in your region. The official listings cover different platform sets, and regional storefronts can change what is sold or stocked. Platform fit is a valid deciding factor, not a compromise.
A five-step decision method for complete newcomers
- Read the two premise summaries. Choose the hidden Shadow Hour and S.E.E.S. if that sounds more appealing; choose the dual-life Phantom Thieves setup if that is the stronger hook.
- Decide whether version history matters to you. Reload is a remake of Persona 3. Royal is an expanded edition of Persona 5. Select the type of release you would rather start with.
- Identify your content priority. Reload’s listed additions are character side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes. Royal’s listed additions are an entirely new semester and new characters.
- Check the exact platform and region. Open your local console or PC storefront and confirm that the product name, edition and language or physical format match what you intend to buy.
- Commit without worrying about order. Neither official description requires the other game first. Once the premise and platform fit, begin with confidence and avoid spoiler-heavy searches.
Platforms, editions and regional availability
Persona 3 Reload listing
SEGA’s Japanese product page gives Persona 3 Reload a release date of February 2, 2024 and lists a Nintendo Switch 2 release date of October 23, 2025. The same listing names Switch 2, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam. Its package and retail details are Japan-specific, so do not treat those details as a worldwide stock or pricing statement.
Persona 5 Royal listing
Atlus’s official Persona 5 Royal page lists Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. It shows both physical and digital standard options. The presence of an option on that page does not guarantee that your local store has stock or that the same format is sold in every territory.
| Game | Platforms named in the official listing | Edition information stated | Regional caution |

| Persona 3 Reload | Switch 2, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, PS5, PS4 and Steam | Japanese listing includes Japan-specific retail/package details | Confirm your local storefront, release date and physical availability |
| Persona 5 Royal | Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Steam, PS5 and Nintendo Switch | Physical and digital standard options are shown | Confirm local edition, stock and platform listing before purchase |
What to verify before paying
- The platform name: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam or Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, as applicable.
- Whether the listing is for the expanded or remake edition named in this article, rather than a different Persona release.
- Whether you are buying a physical copy or a digital license.
- Your region’s release information, storefront language and current stock.
- Whether an Xbox Game Pass listing is available under your current subscription and territory; availability can change.
Questions you should not use to force a fake answer
“Which one has the shorter campaign?”
No reliable completion-time comparison is established here. Player route, optional content and individual pace can all affect time, and quoting a single number would suggest precision that the official material does not provide. Buy based on premise, version and platform rather than an unverified hour count.
“Which one is objectively better?”
The official pages establish what was remade, what was added and how each premise is framed. They do not provide a neutral ranking of story, combat, characters or presentation. Calling one universally better would turn a fit-based recommendation into an unsupported claim.

“Should I play an older Persona 3 or Persona 5 release first?”
Not for the purpose of understanding these games. Reload is the remake to choose when you want Persona 3’s story in its modern presentation, while Royal is the expanded Persona 5 edition to choose when you want its added semester and characters. Do not assume that details from every older edition are included in Reload.
Starting without spoilers
If you choose Persona 3 Reload
Begin with the premise as presented: a transfer student, Gekkoukan High, S.E.E.S., Shadows and the Shadow Hour. Let the game’s own introductions establish the mystery. Because Reload adds side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes, avoid guides that label character developments or late-game events before you have played them.
If you choose Persona 5 Royal
Approach Royal as the expanded Persona 5 story that Atlus describes as story-heavy. The Phantom Thieves’ dual lives are enough context to begin. Avoid searches about the new semester or new characters until you have reached them naturally, since even basic explanations can reveal why those additions matter.

For either choice
- Use the game’s own terminology before consulting fan wikis.
- Do not look up endings, character guides or “what to do first” lists unless you accept spoilers.
- Keep your purchase receipt and platform account details until the game launches correctly.
- If the store page is unclear, verify the exact edition name rather than assuming every Persona 3 or Persona 5 listing is interchangeable.
Final recommendation
Choose Persona 5 Royal when you want the strongest general-purpose starting point: an expanded Persona 5 release, a story-heavy presentation and the Phantom Thieves premise. Choose Persona 3 Reload when the hidden Shadow Hour, S.E.E.S. investigation and modern remake identity are the reasons you are interested in Persona in the first place. If the two appeals are equal, let your platform and local edition availability decide. Whichever you select, you are starting with a game whose official premise is designed to introduce its own cast and conflict.
