Want to play now? Choose Persona 4 Golden. If you can wait for the announced 2027 release and prefer updated presentation and systems, consider Persona 4 Revival. ATLUS and SEGA describe Revival as a remake of Golden that keeps the original story line, but the remake is unreleased, so its final content and quality cannot yet be judged.
What is confirmed to be different?
SEGA describes Persona 4 Revival as a remake of Persona 4 Golden, rather than a remake of the original Persona 4 alone. ATLUS calls it a full remake and says the original story line remains. That establishes the broad relationship between the games, but not whether every scene, side activity, or feature specific to Golden will return unchanged.
| Area | What publishers have announced |
|---|---|
| Visuals and interface | Modernized visuals and UI. ATLUS’s official site and SEGA’s release notice describe these updates. |
| Combat and events | Modernized battles and events; ATLUS describes the battles as more strategic and events as more emotionally expressive. The released game has not yet been available to verify how these changes play. |
| Cutscenes | SEGA names enhanced cutscenes among the updates. |
| Music | ATLUS says new music is included. SEGA’s Japanese product page separately lists remixed existing songs and new tracks: Persona 4 Revival product information. |
| Story | ATLUS says the original story line is retained. The announcement does not settle the fate of every individual scene or Golden-specific feature. |
The premise remains a murder mystery in rural Inaba, linked to the Midnight Channel: high-school students investigate the killings, face Shadows using Persona abilities, and balance the case with school life, according to the official ATLUS site. Golden‘s Steam listing likewise describes a coming-of-age story in Inaba centered on serial murders and the protagonist’s friends.
When and where can you play them?
As of October 3, 2026, Persona 4 Golden is available on Steam; its listing identifies June 13, 2020 as its PC release date. The cited listing confirms the PC version, not availability on every other platform. Persona 4 Revival is scheduled for 2027, with platform and regional timing differences:

Wait for Persona 4 Revival if updated presentation matters more than playing immediately
The announced remake modernizes visuals, UI, battles and events, and includes new music. Waiting is a preference about timing and announced changes—not evidence that the unreleased game is better.
You do not need both to follow the announced story
ATLUS says Revival keeps the original story line, so the available information does not suggest that players must finish Golden first. Whether particular story scenes or side features are expanded, changed or omitted remains unconfirmed.

What remains unknown about the remake?
Revival has not been released. Its completed performance, full content list, preservation of specific Golden-only scenes and activities, reviews, and hands-on quality are therefore not established. Publisher descriptions confirm the remake’s broad direction, not a finished-game comparison.
For context, SEGA said in its June 8, 2026 Persona-series announcement that the franchise had surpassed 30 million units worldwide. That is a series-wide figure, not sales for either of these games: SEGA announcement.

The Japanese Limited Box is specifically a PS5 physical edition and lists the base game, a 48-page artbook, a Midnight Channel phone pouch, an original T-shirt, a designer box and a costume set. Those details establish what that Japanese edition is listed to include; they do not confirm that the same box or contents will be sold in other markets. Why is it called a revival?
ATLUS and SEGA announced Persona 4 Revival on June 8, 2025. Kazuhisa Wada, Director at P-STUDIO, described the studio’s aim: “We are confident that this will be a fresh and surprising product for both newcomers and long-time fans and we look forward to sharing it with you all.” That is the team’s stated ambition, not an assessment of the finished game.
