Persona 5 Tactica is a generally well-received, approachable tactics spin-off built around the Phantom Thieves—but it is not a deep or especially demanding strategy game by every critic’s standard. It is most appealing if you want to spend more time with the cast in grid-based battles; expectations should be lower if you want the challenge or story scope of a mainline Persona.
What is Persona 5 Tactica?
Persona 5 Tactica is a tactical RPG spin-off with a new story in the Persona universe. ATLUS describes assembling familiar heroes to battle oppressive armies in turn-based combat, alongside brand-new allies and foes. The central change is the format: instead of the mainline series’ mix of daily life and dungeon exploration, this game focuses on tactical encounters.

Those encounters take place on a grid. GamesRadar describes battles built around positioning, flanking and coordinated “Triple Threat” attacks, which reward arranging the squad to create openings. Players also assemble a team, use weapons and draw on Personas. ( GamesRadar+ review; ATLUS official site)
What do Persona 5 Tactica reviews say?
The broad critical picture is favorable, but not unanimous. Metacritic’s PlayStation 5 critic page displays a 74 Metascore, classified as “Mixed or Average,” from 35 reviews in its 2023 review cycle. Its displayed distribution is 22 positive, 12 mixed and zero negative reviews. This is a PS5-specific snapshot, accessed in 2026; the score and count can change if the page’s sample changes. It should not be read as an all-platform score or a guarantee that every critic liked the game. (Metacritic PS5 critic page)

- BUILD YOUR DREAM SQUAD - Assemble a team of beloved heroes to fight oppressive armies in thrilling turnbased combat
- DYNAMIC COMBAT - Overthrow your enemies with powerful Personas, an assortment of weapons, and wipe them out with style!
Reviews tend to value the familiar cast, the accessible tactical format and the presentation. The reservations are about how much the game asks of strategy fans and how its story compares with the main Persona entries. Individual critics differed: Game Informer described it as fun for players seeking a more casual strategy game, while IGN Spain cautioned that experienced tactics players might find it lacking. NME praised the tactical twist and cast while also drawing attention to the story. Those are individual judgments, not universal verdicts. (Metacritic critic reviews)
Is Persona 5 Tactica good?
It is a good fit for a player who wants a more approachable tactical game and another chance to spend time with the Phantom Thieves. The turn-based grid format gives the series a distinct change of pace, while the familiar characters provide much of its appeal.
Rank #2
- Gather a team of popular heroes to face the armies of oppressors in exciting turn-based battles
- Lead a riot of hearts in a brand new story that plays in the legendary Persona universe
- Beat your enemies with powerful personas, a selection of weapons and defeat them in style!
- In addition to the game, the first edition includes a DLC code for 2 Persona games ("Orpheus Picaro" & "Izanagi Picaro") in the box
It is a less certain choice if you want demanding tactical systems or a story with the breadth and depth you associate with the mainline games. Some reviews characterize the plot as low-stakes or flag pacing concerns. The practical verdict: consider it a cast-led, lighter strategy spin-off, rather than a replacement for Persona 5 or a heavyweight tactics challenge.
Is Persona 5 Tactica difficult?
Critics generally describe it as welcoming to players who are new to tactical RPGs. That accessibility is a strength if you want to learn the genre without a steep difficulty curve. It can also be a drawback: players experienced with tactics games may find the combat too simple or insufficiently challenging. Reviews support that broad contrast, not a single difficulty rating that applies to every player.

Do you need to play Persona 5 first?
The game is presented as a new story in the Persona universe, with returning Phantom Thieves and new characters. Playing the earlier game can help you recognize the cast and appreciate their familiar personalities, but the sources cited here do not establish a required-play order or quantify how much prior knowledge the story assumes. If you are new to the series, expect returning characters rather than a wholly separate cast.
