There is no single pity counter for every Contract in Persona 5: The Phantom X. First identify whether you are pulling on a Targeted character Contract, a Chance character Contract, an Arms Deal, or another Contract type. Each can have different thresholds and counter-sharing rules. For the rules active on your account, open the Contract screen and select Drop Rates.
How many pulls to guarantee a featured character?
The answer depends on the Contract type and the version or region you play. A 5★ threshold is a guaranteed 5★ draw, not necessarily a featured character; a featured guarantee may require an additional 5★ after losing a featured split.
In an official Operations Team letter dated 15 August 2025, the then-current main Contracts rule guaranteed a 5★ on the draw after 79 draws without one. The letter also said that if the 5★ was not the Most Wanted character, the next 5★ would be guaranteed to be that character. The letter cautioned that this general rule did not necessarily apply to Newcomer Contracts and Arms Deals. These are the letter’s stated rules, not a universal threshold for every Contract today. For a more specific comparison, Prydwen’s guide, last updated 9 December 2025, reports the following thresholds. Treat them as secondary-source figures, and check the live Drop Rates page for your Contract’s current terms.

These numbers describe different Contract systems; do not add them together or assume one counter can be spent on another type. Prydwen also reports a reward at 165 cumulative Targeted pulls: a random permanent 5★ character. That is a separate cumulative reward, not the Targeted Contract’s 5★ threshold. What happens if you lose the 50/50?
On a Chance character Contract, Prydwen’s December 2025 guide describes the featured chance as 50%. If the 5★ you receive is not the featured character, the guide says your next 5★ on that pity type is guaranteed to be featured. It reports a similar structure for the weapon banner. The threshold for the next 5★ remains tied to the relevant Contract counter; losing the split does not make the character and weapon counters interchangeable.
The official August 2025 letter describes the same broad featured-guarantee idea for its then-current main Contracts: a non-Most Wanted 5★ makes the next 5★ the Most Wanted character. Because the letter expressly warns that some Contract types may differ, use the live terms rather than applying that rule automatically to every banner.
Does pity carry over to the next banner?
SEGA Customer Support confirms that Targeted and Chance Most Wanted Phantom Idol Contracts have separate counters. Character Contracts and Arms Deals also belong to separate counter groups. Different Most Wanted character Contracts of the same type share their group’s counter, and the same applies to Arms Deals. The applicable 5★ counter resets whenever you pull a 5★ Phantom Thief or weapon. SEGA explains counter resets and sharing.

Prydwen’s guide says pity carries between banners that use the same pity type. SEGA’s support explanation confirms the counter groups and the separation between Targeted and Chance, but does not list every live banner pairing. So, a counter can carry to another banner in its own group, but do not assume two banners share pity just because both feature characters or both show a 5★ guarantee. Confirm the type shown on the current Contract before pulling.
How do I check the rules for my current Contract?
- Open the in-game Contract screen.
- Select the specific banner or Contract you are considering.
- Tap Drop Rates to view its current rates and terms.

Rules have been discussed in different date and regional contexts. The Operations Team’s 15 August 2025 letter described a planned system for Japanese and Western versions in which a 5★ was guaranteed after 109 draws without one. It said the existing system would remain available and that the two systems would count draws separately. The announcement described plans at that time; it does not establish which rules are active for every region now.
The same letter noted that the planned timing differed from the roughly six-month post-launch timing for the Chinese/Asia version. That historical rollout note is not confirmation of a current schedule. Because region, rollout, and Contract type can affect what applies, use your own in-game Drop Rates screen for the final word.
