The Persona game announced for Android is Persona5: The Phantom X (P5X), a new free-to-play RPG set in the world of Persona 5. It is not a mobile port of the original game: P5X has a new story and cast, and it launched on June 26, 2025 for iOS, Android, Google Play Games and Steam.
What is the Persona game announced for Android?
It is Persona5: The Phantom X, usually shortened to P5X. Sega announced the project in 2023 as a smartphone RPG based on Persona 5’s world and basic setting. Under a Sega intellectual-property license, Perfect World develops and operates the game with Atlus supervision and cooperation. Sega’s original announcement described a new Phantom Thieves group in Tokyo and a game designed to retain the series’ style while adapting its visuals, user experience and pacing for smartphone play.
Is Persona5: The Phantom X a mobile port of Persona 5?
No. P5X is a separate game with an original story and new characters, not a phone version of the original Persona 5. Sega’s launch announcement describes it as a brand-new story with a new cast. The official Japanese product page introduces a protagonist who encounters Lufel, a talking owl, the Velvet Room and Mementos in a world where desire is disappearing. Sega’s P5X product page has the current official synopsis.
The games share a setting and recognizable Persona elements, but P5X follows a different Phantom Thieves group. Sega’s June 2025 launch notice also described an introductory event featuring Joker, Mona and other Phantom Thieves; that was launch-event information, not confirmation that the same event remains available today. Do you need to play Persona 5 first?
Sega’s official materials do not describe Persona 5 or Persona 5 Royal as prerequisites. The story and cast are new, so the original games are optional background rather than a stated requirement. Playing one may help you recognize the setting and returning characters, but newcomers can approach P5X as its own story.
