It became available in Steam Early Access on April 22, 2026, and remains unfinished as of October 8, 2026. Its latest major update, New Beginnings, launched October 1 with changes to night battles, progression, orders, and world interaction.
What is Masters of Albion?
Masters of Albion is a god game in which you shape a settlement and its inhabitants from above, then take a more direct role in the world. Developed and published by 22cans, it is set in Albion and mixes town management, crafting, quests, exploration, and combat.
Steam’s description presents a day-and-night loop: daytime is for building and managing towns, designing products, guiding residents, and exploring; at night, corrupted creatures attack settlements. Players can prepare defenses, deploy heroes, and use god powers to fight them. The game also lets players switch from an overhead god perspective to direct control of people and other characters, including through possession. Its store description includes morally flexible ways to treat inhabitants.
Is Masters of Albion finished?
No. It is available on Steam in Early Access, not as a completed full release. Steam says the current build contains the complete Chapter One experience, while describing the game as evolving and listing combat, balance, and the user interface among areas still needing refinement. 22cans estimates about 12 months in Early Access, but warns that the schedule may change. That estimate is a development target, not a confirmed full-release date. Steam’s store page has the current availability and Early Access details.

Steam’s storefront snapshot on October 8, 2026 showed 64% positive ratings from 610 user reviews. That is a dated, changing Steam user-review aggregate—not a critic score or a settled verdict on the game.
What changed in the New Beginnings update?
PC Gamer reported that New Beginnings launched on October 1, 2026. Its coverage describes changes across several parts of play:
- Night battles and buffs: Peter Molyneux said efficient defenses can earn a score to spend on nighttime buffs. He described roughly 200 buffs to unlock; that is his approximate count, not an independent tally.
- Arcadium progression: The earlier tech-tree-style system was replaced with cards unlocked using in-game currency. Cards such as lightning can be enhanced through nighttime play.
- Product orders: Orders now have narrative context, with clues or tips intended to make fulfilling them more engaging.
- God-hand interaction: Molyneux described expanded ways to move objects and interact with villagers and the environment.
- Performance: Molyneux told PC Gamer that average frame rates on recommended specifications had reached 60–80, compared with an earlier target of 30. This is his account of the team’s results, not a controlled independent benchmark.
PC Gamer writer Robert Jones also offered a positive personal reaction to the update; that is an individual impression, separate from Steam’s user-review aggregate or any critic consensus. PC Gamer’s update coverage includes Molyneux’s comments and its description of the changes.
How does it connect to Molyneux’s earlier games?
Molyneux has described the game as drawing selected elements from three of his earlier series: possession from Dungeon Keeper; open-world freedom and the god hand from Black & White; and humor, lore, world-building, and adventure from Fable. That is his account of the design’s intentions, not proof that the parts work equally well together in the current Early Access build.

In a February 11, 2026 interview with PCGamesN, Molyneux called Masters of Albion “at its heart, a god game,” and described the genre as giving players freedom to approach play in different ways. The interviewer also raised skepticism about his history of overpromising. Molyneux responded that he wanted to be “really honest and forthright” and not overpromise. Those comments provide context for the project; they do not resolve how complete or successful the game is today. Read the PCGamesN interview.

The current pitch is broader than simply issuing commands from above: players build and manage, explore and undertake quests, then defend their settlements and can take direct control of characters. That mix may appeal to players who want god-game oversight alongside town management, action, and adventure. The practical trade-off is Early Access: Chapter One is available, but combat, balance, and interface work remain in progress, and the development schedule can shift.

- A unique, modernized twist on traditional murder-mystery games.
- Mature content appropriate for 1 to 5 players, ages 16 and up.
- Play as a FBI agent that goes undercover in a high security prison.

- Players must use Google Maps, websites, and email to find the truth and answer puzzles.
Steam’s bundles pair Masters of Albion with War for the Overworld and Sintopia, but a bundle listing alone does not establish either as a close substitute. The more useful comparison is whether you want a game centered on god-like control, settlement management, night-survival combat, or direct character-led exploration—and whether you are comfortable playing before the full release.
