Start in Practice Mode, learn how your equipment records evidence, then use a repeatable routine on contracts: check likely activity with an EMF reader, compare room temperatures, and cross-check clues before guessing. Treat cold breath and ghost orbs as leads—not proof—and prioritize a safe hiding place whenever a hunt begins.
Learn the basics in Practice Mode
If you are new, use the game’s Practice Mode to learn how equipment works and where evidence is recorded in the Journal before a live contract puts pressure on you. PlayStation’s official listing describes Practice Mode as consequence-free, making it a low-pressure place to get familiar with the investigation loop. It does not establish that every setting or mechanic behaves identically across all contract difficulties.
Phasmophobia supports a one-player option as well as online co-op for up to four players, according to the PlayStation listing. Solo play lets you set the pace; a group can split tasks and share information. The listing also describes cross-play and monitoring from the truck, so a teammate who is not ready to enter can still help watch cameras or sensors.
Choose a manageable first-trip loadout
There is no single mandatory kit: available equipment and loadouts can vary. For a basic first pass, GameSpot recommends an EMF reader, thermometer, and video camera as useful starter tools. Bring a light source if visibility makes navigating difficult; seeing where you are going is more useful than carrying an extra evidence tool you cannot operate safely.

- LEARN SCIENCE: Players will interact and learn the fundamentals of ionic bonding through creating neutrally charged compounds, noble gases, charges, anions and cations, and acids and bases. Science geeks will love playing this game with their classroom, family, and friends in this fast-paced pick-and-pass card game.
- FAST PACED: Ion is a fast-paced card game for 2-7 players spanning around 20-30 minutes. Each round, players compete to build compounds using positively and negatively charged ions. Points are scored for successful compounds, Noble Gases, and achieving Goal Cards. After 3 rounds, the player with the most points wins!
- PICK AND PASS: Each player starts with a hand of 10 cards, and chooses one card to place in front of them. They then pass the rest of their hand to the player on their right, where they continue playing and passing cards until every card is used. Your goal is to match the positive and negative charges on your cards to create neutrally charged compounds, scoring points.
- SCIENTIFICALLY ACCURATE: All of Genius Games's products are peer-reviewed by a team of 20+ PhD Doctors and Scientists from around the globe. Ion also contains a Science Behind booklet, detailing how the mechanics and cards found in game relate to their real world concepts. Ion is also STEM and NGSS complaint, and was awarded the Dice Tower Seal of Approval. This game is perfect for at home learning, for use in the classroom, or adding some science to your next family game night.
- RADIOACTIVE CARD GAME: Also included is a harder difficulty which includes radioactivity. Recommended for more experience players and a party of 4+ people. This advanced game requires players to manage radioactive decay along with the radioactivity of other players. These cards score points at the end of each round, and additional points are given to the player(s) with the most decay at the end of the game. Step up your game with this challenging card game!
- EMF reader: Check it around suspected interactions or activity. A reading can help you focus your search, but do not identify a ghost from one unexplained signal.
- Thermometer: Compare temperatures between rooms to find a colder area that may be worth investigating. Use the threshold rules below before recording freezing temperatures as evidence.
- Video camera: Set it up to check a room for ghost orbs. Treat an orb as a clue that needs cross-checking, not a final identification.
Follow a repeatable first-investigation routine
- Get oriented. Note the entrance, routes back out, and places you could use to hide. If you are playing with a team, agree who is carrying which tools and who can monitor equipment from the truck.
- Look for activity. Check rooms for interactions and use the EMF reader near suspected activity. Pay attention to where clues occur rather than assuming the first signal proves a room or ghost type.
- Compare room temperatures. Take readings in more than one area. A colder room can help narrow the search, but a low reading is not automatically freezing evidence.
- Check for orbs. Place or use the video camera so you can inspect the suspected room. Remember that the Mimic can show ghost orbs as an ability even though orbs are not one of its official evidence types.
- Record only confirmed evidence. Enter clues in the Journal when you have verified them using the tool and its instructions. Revisit uncertain observations rather than turning a hunch into a confirmed item.
- Reassess before taking more risks. Compare the recorded evidence with possible ghost types. If the evidence is incomplete, gather another clue only when it is reasonably safe; a speculative guess is better than staying exposed without a plan.
Cold breath is not proof of freezing temperatures
Visible breath and freezing evidence use different thresholds. Kinetic Games’ v0.9 “Ascension” update notes say visible cold breath can appear at 5°C and below, while freezing temperatures must be measured with a thermometer at 0°C (32°F) or lower. The same notes say thermometers count as starter equipment. Weather can affect ambient temperatures, so use the thermometer reading—not breath alone—to confirm freezing evidence.
Use ghost orbs as a lead, then cross-check
Ghost orbs can help you locate a likely room, but they do not settle the identification. GameSpot notes that the Mimic can produce orbs as an ability even though ghost orbs are not one of its official evidence types. Record what your tools actually confirm, then compare the combination of clues in the Journal. If an orb conflicts with the rest of your evidence, reconsider the interpretation instead of forcing a match.

Survive hunts before attempting advanced tactics
When a hunt starts, make escape and hiding your priority. Learn the map’s routes and hiding options during calmer moments so you are not trying to improvise while in danger. Do not keep using equipment or pursue another clue when getting to safety is the immediate need.
GameSpot discusses looping around furniture as an evasion tactic, but it is situational, not a guaranteed escape. Treat it as an advanced technique to learn after you understand the map and the risks; a beginner should favor a known route to a hiding place over attempting to outmaneuver the ghost.

Pick a role that fits your experience
- Practice first: Lower pressure and time to learn tools, but less of the decision-making pressure of a live investigation.
- Investigate with a team: Share equipment and observations, while coordinating who enters and who monitors.
- Monitor from the truck: Watch cameras or sensors and relay information without making every player enter the location. PlayStation’s listing describes truck-based monitoring as part of play.
- Play solo: The official listing describes a one-player option. It gives you control over the pace, but there is no teammate to divide tasks or share observations.
Check current controls and updates
Phasmophobia is actively updated, so treat older control instructions and evidence advice with care. Kinetic Games’ Quality of Life Update Preview described PC inventory-slot keybinds 1–4, evidence-collection changes, equipment-use animation cancellation, and a 13 Willow Street rework launching July 21, 2026. Because that page is a preview, check the current build’s settings and patch notes for live controls or behavior before relying on those details.
In its 2026 and Beyond outlook, Kinetic Games said version 1.0 had moved to 2027. That is the developer’s stated timing at the time of the outlook, not a guarantee of a future release schedule.
