On Nightmare, the cited evidence guide says ghosts provide two evidence types while the third is hidden, so you may need to narrow the list without collecting a full set.
How to identify a ghost in Phasmophobia
- Record the evidence you find. Add uncovered evidence to the journal; the Phasmophobia Wiki’s Evidence page describes using journal entries to narrow the possible ghosts.
- Eliminate incompatible candidates. Compare the recorded evidence with the listed evidence for the ghosts still under consideration.
- Account for the difficulty. Check whether the selected difficulty hides evidence before treating an unobserved type as a mismatch.
- Compare remaining candidates by behavior. Look for a distinctive ability or trait described in an identification guide, and consider whether the observed behavior fits the evidence you already have.
Use behavior to corroborate a candidate, not to declare a match from one ambiguous event. A single observation may have competing explanations; weigh it against the evidence and the other plausible ghosts.

What evidence does each ghost give?
The answer depends on the ghost and the difficulty. Use the journal’s evidence entries to compare possible ghosts rather than assuming every investigation will reveal every evidence type. The Evidence reference says that on Nightmare each ghost provides two evidence types and its third type is hidden. In that setting, failing to uncover the hidden type does not by itself rule out a candidate.
The cited mechanics come from community-maintained references rather than official developer documentation. Check the journal and the current game build when an evidence combination or behavior matters to your identification.

How to narrow ghosts when evidence is hidden or refused
The Phasmophobia Wiki’s identifying-ghosts guide recommends using abilities and traits when evidence is hidden or a ghost refuses to provide a type. Apply that advice in sequence:
- Keep track of which evidence is confirmed and which is simply not observed.
- Retain candidates that could fit the confirmed evidence and the selected difficulty.
- Compare the remaining candidates’ documented abilities or traits.
- Look for more than one observation before treating a behavior as diagnostic, and reconsider if it conflicts with the evidence.
This approach is especially useful when you cannot complete a standard evidence set. It narrows possibilities; it does not make every unusual event conclusive.

How current is the ghost roster?
Ghost entries and mechanics can change with game updates, so verify the roster and listed evidence in the live build you are playing. The Phasmophobia Pro Wiki ghost database search listing describes a database of 30 ghost types, but that count is not tied to a specific game version or an official roster. Treat it as a community reference, not a guarantee of the roster in your build.
The evidence and identification pages linked above are also community references. They are useful for narrowing candidates, but check the in-game journal if a specific evidence combination appears inconsistent with what you encounter.
