1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsphp_ldap.dll is PHP’s Windows extension for LDAP support, used by PHP applications that connect to LDAP directories or Active Directory. If it is missing or will not load, repair the complete PHP installation that supplied it rather than downloading a standalone DLL or copying it into System32.
The correct file normally belongs in:
<PHP directory>extphp_ldap.dll
PHP loads it through php.ini. The PHP version, architecture, compiler build, Thread Safe or Non Thread Safe mode, dependencies, and active configuration file must all match.
1. Identify the PHP installation that is actually running
Time needed: 5 minutes
Multiple PHP installations are common on Windows. Command-line PHP, Apache, IIS, WAMP, XAMPP, and a packaged application may all use different PHP directories and different php.ini files.
Open Command Prompt and run:
php -v
php --ini
php -i | findstr /I "Loaded Configuration File extension_dir"
php -m
Check the results:
php -vshows the PHP version, x86 or x64 architecture, and often TS or NTS information.php --inishows the configuration file used by CLI PHP.extension_dirshows where PHP expects extensions.php -mlists loaded modules. Look forldap.
If Windows says that php is not recognized, use the full path to the PHP executable, for example:

"C:PHPphp.exe" -v
"C:PHPphp.exe" --ini
For IIS or Apache, create a temporary PHP information page containing:
<?php phpinfo();
Open it through the affected website and check Loaded Configuration File, extension_dir, Architecture, and Thread Safety. Delete the page after checking it because phpinfo() exposes configuration details.
If the configuration path differs between CLI and the website, editing the CLI php.ini will not fix the web application.
2. Restore the matching PHP package
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most reliable fix when php_ldap.dll is absent, damaged, or from the wrong release.
- Stop the affected application, Apache service, or IIS website.
- Record the PHP version and architecture from
php -vorphpinfo(). - Obtain the complete PHP package intended for that application and build.
- Match all of these:
- PHP version or application-supported branch
- x86 or x64 architecture
- compiler build
- Thread Safe or Non Thread Safe mode
- Extract or install the package into a clean PHP directory.
- Confirm that the new directory contains
extphp_ldap.dll. - Carry over only the necessary application settings to the new
php.ini. - Do not copy random DLLs from the old directory into the new one.
- Re-enable LDAP as described in the next section.
- Restart the relevant server and test the application.
Do not mix php_ldap.dll from one PHP version with php.exe from another. A file can have the right name and still be incompatible with the PHP engine.
Installing the newest PHP release may also break an old application. If the application requires an older PHP branch, use the compatible package temporarily, isolate it from other sites, and plan a migration. PHP branches such as 5.6, 7.0, 7.1, and 7.2 are unsupported and should not remain exposed to unnecessary network traffic.
3. Correct php.ini and extension_dir
Time needed: 5 minutes
Open the php.ini shown by php --ini or by the affected website’s phpinfo() page.
Set an absolute extension directory:
extension_dir="C:PHPext"
Replace C:PHP with the actual PHP directory. Then enable LDAP:
extension=ldap
For older PHP configurations, this form may also be valid:
extension=php_ldap.dll
Do not enable both lines at once. Search the file for existing LDAP entries and remove the leading semicolon from the correct one, or replace it with the appropriate directive.
Save the file, then restart the service:
- Apache: restart Apache through its control panel or Windows Services.
- IIS: restart the website or run
iisresetfrom an elevated Command Prompt. - WAMP or XAMPP: restart Apache from the control panel.
- Command line: close and reopen Command Prompt before testing.
- Packaged application: close and reopen the application, or use its own service restart option.
Verify the extension:
php -m | findstr /I ldap
php -i | findstr /I ldap
If ldap appears, the extension loaded. If the application still reports an error, repeat the commands against the PHP executable used by that application rather than the one found first in PATH.
4. Match x86, x64, TS, and NTS builds
Time needed: 10 minutes
A 32-bit PHP process cannot load a 64-bit extension, and a 64-bit PHP process cannot load a 32-bit extension. The fact that Windows itself is 64-bit does not prove that the application uses 64-bit PHP.
Compare:
php -v
with the PHP package and the application’s requirements. Check the architecture in phpinfo() as well.
Thread mode matters too:
- NTS is normally used with IIS and FastCGI.
- TS is intended for Apache when PHP is loaded as an Apache module.
A wrong build can produce messages such as:
The operating system cannot run %1.
or:
%1 is not a valid Win32 application.
Those messages often indicate an architecture or binary mismatch, although corruption can produce similar symptoms. Replace the complete PHP package with the correct build instead of replacing only php_ldap.dll.

5. Install the required Microsoft runtime
Time needed: 10 minutes
PHP for Windows requires a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime matching its architecture. Install or repair the current supported Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft:
Download the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use the package that matches PHP:
- x64 PHP requires
vc_redist.x64.exe. - x86 PHP requires
vc_redist.x86.exe.
After installation:
- Restart Windows or at least restart the affected server.
- Run
php -v. - Run
php -m. - Check whether the LDAP startup warning has disappeared.
Do not install only the x64 runtime because Windows is 64-bit if the PHP process is x86.
6. Repair missing extension dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This error does not always mean that php_ldap.dll itself is absent. PHP can report:
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'...extphp_ldap.dll'
The specified module could not be found.
The named extension may be present while one of its dependencies is missing.
Older PHP builds may depend on files such as:
libeay32.dll
ssleay32.dll
libsasl.dll
Newer builds may use OpenSSL files with names such as:
libcrypto-*.dll
libssl-*.dll
The exact dependency set varies by PHP release. Restore the files from the same complete PHP archive that supplied php_ldap.dll. Keep them in the PHP directory or another controlled directory included in PATH.
Do not download individual dependency DLLs from an unrelated source, and do not place them in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. PHP’s dependencies must remain consistent with the PHP build.
Apache can also load conflicting OpenSSL libraries before PHP. If LDAP works from the command line but fails under Apache, inspect the Apache and PHP library paths and remove mixed dependency sets.
7. Check antivirus quarantine and application repair
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Security software may quarantine a PHP extension, especially inside an application bundle.

8. Use Windows repair only for Windows corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
php_ldap.dll is a PHP file, not a Windows system component. SFC and DISM normally cannot restore it. Use them when Windows itself is unstable, system files are damaged, or other built-in components are failing.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Run DISM before SFC. Wait for each command to finish, restart Windows, and test PHP again.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while its repair actions require the full version; reinstalling the matching PHP package remains the definitive fix for this application file.
If SFC reports repaired files but PHP still cannot load LDAP, return to the PHP package, architecture, dependency, and php.ini checks.
9. Drivers and Device Manager are usually unrelated
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
php_ldap.dll is not a hardware driver, so Device Manager is not the normal repair location.
Use Device Manager only if the PHP failure began alongside a broader Windows problem, such as a network adapter failure that prevents the application from reaching LDAP:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.

- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not replace php_ldap.dll with a driver update. If several devices have warning icons, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the exact devices involved, while driver installation through the full version is optional and not a substitute for repairing PHP.
10. Do not use regsvr32 or copy the DLL to System32
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 registers COM or ActiveX-style DLLs that expose DllRegisterServer. PHP extensions are loaded by the PHP engine through php.ini, so this command is not the normal solution:
regsvr32 php_ldap.dll
It may produce a registration error and does not repair PHP configuration or dependencies.
Likewise, copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is unsafe and usually ineffective. It can create version conflicts and does nothing to correct the PHP extension directory.
Never download php_ldap.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong PHP version or architecture, or lack the dependencies that caused the original failure. Use the complete PHP package supplied by the application or the official PHP for Windows distribution.
What the error usually means
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
File is not in ext |
Incomplete or damaged PHP package | Restore the complete matching package |
| File exists but says “module not found” | Missing dependency | Restore dependencies from the same PHP archive |
| “Not a valid Win32 application” | x86/x64 or binary mismatch | Match architecture and PHP build |
| LDAP works in CLI but not the website | Different PHP or php.ini |
Check phpinfo() through the affected server |
| Error appears after antivirus action | Quarantine or cleanup | Check Protection history and reinstall if uncertain |
| Extension loads but LDAP login fails | Network, certificate, DNS, bind, or directory issue | Troubleshoot LDAP connectivity separately |
Once php_ldap.dll loads, a failed LDAP connection is a different problem. Certificate validation, DNS, firewall rules, bind credentials, Active Directory policy, and server availability can all prevent a connection even when the PHP extension is working.
FAQ
Where should php_ldap.dll be located?
Normally in:
<PHP directory>extphp_ldap.dll
The exact path is determined by extension_dir in the active php.ini.
Can I copy php_ldap.dll from another computer?
Only when it comes from the identical PHP package and build, including architecture and TS/NTS mode. In practice, reinstalling the complete package is safer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does PHP say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependent runtime or library may be missing. The message names the extension PHP tried to load, not necessarily the file that is absent.
Should I install LDAP through Windows Features?
No. Windows Features does not install PHP’s LDAP extension. IIS, Active Directory tools, or LDAP client components do not replace php_ldap.dll.
How do I know the fix worked?
Run:
php -m | findstr /I ldap
Then confirm that ldap appears and that the application no longer logs a PHP startup warning. Test an actual LDAP operation afterward.
What if every repair fails?
Capture php --ini, php -v, php -m, the PHP installation path, server type, architecture, exact startup message, and PHP archive name. Replace the entire PHP directory with a clean compatible build rather than continuing to swap individual DLLs.
