For Microsoft SQL Server, the application may require the separate pdo_sqlsrv driver.
After saving php.ini, restart Apache, IIS, PHP-FPM, or the application that runs PHP. Then confirm the result with:
php -m
If an older PHP installation genuinely requires php_pdo.dll, reinstall the complete matching PHP package. Do not download the DLL separately or copy it into System32.

php_pdo.dll is the historical Windows DLL name for PHP Data Objects, or PDO. PDO gives PHP applications a consistent interface for connecting to databases and sending queries.
The file belongs to PHP, which is developed by The PHP Group. It is normally associated with the PHP installation, especially its ext directory. It does not belong to Windows, Microsoft, DirectX, a graphics driver, or the Windows system folders.
PDO itself is different from a database driver:
- PDO is the common database-access layer.
pdo_mysqlconnects PHP to MySQL-compatible databases.pdo_sqliteprovides SQLite support.pdo_pgsqlprovides PostgreSQL support.pdo_odbcuses ODBC connections.pdo_sqlsrvis Microsoft’s PHP driver for SQL Server.
A PHP application can have PDO available but still fail because the specific driver it needs is disabled.
Microsoft’s PHP-driver documentation explains that prebuilt Windows PHP binaries include PDO. A separately compiled PHP build can still create a standalone php_pdo.dll, which explains why the filename appears in older instructions and startup errors. See Microsoft’s explanation of loading the Microsoft Drivers for PHP.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why old guides mention php_pdo.dll
Older PHP 5-era configurations commonly included lines such as:
extension=php_pdo.dll
extension=php_pdo_mysql.dll
That configuration can survive an upgrade. If the new PHP build has PDO built in, PHP may then try to load a file that is no longer supplied separately.
PHP also supports the shorter extension syntax used by current configurations:
extension=pdo_mysql
The old filename syntax remains supported for compatibility, but it should not be added automatically to a modern installation.

You may see one of these messages:
Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:PHPextphp_pdo.dll' - The specified module could not be found.
Unable to load dynamic library 'C:phpextphp_pdo.dll' - the specified procedure could not be found.
Windows may also display:
The program can’t start because php_pdo.dll is missing from your computer.
or:
php_pdo.dll is not designed to run on Windows.
These messages do not all mean the same thing. “Module could not be found” can mean that the named file is missing, but it can also indicate a missing dependency, an incorrect extension_dir, or an incompatible PHP build.
A “procedure could not be found” message usually points toward a version or build mismatch. The file may exist but be incompatible with the PHP executable loading it.
Before changing anything, identify the PHP installation in use
Windows computers often contain several PHP installations. The command-line PHP, Apache, IIS, XAMPP, WampServer, and a vendor application may each use different files.

Open Command Prompt:
- Press Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator only if your installation requires elevated access.
- Run:
where php
This lists the PHP executable found through PATH. Check whether it points to the installation you intended to repair.
Now run:
php -v
php --ini
php -v shows the PHP version and build information. php --ini shows the loaded configuration file and any additional configuration directory.
Record the path shown after Loaded Configuration File. That is the php.ini file you must edit for command-line PHP.
To inspect the relevant settings, run:
php -i | findstr /i "PDO extension_dir Thread Safety Architecture"
For web applications, create a temporary file inside the application’s web root:
<?php
phpinfo();
Open that file through the same Apache or IIS site that produces the error. Look for:
- PHP version
- Architecture
- Thread Safety
extension_dir- Loaded Configuration File
- PDO
- The required PDO driver
Delete the temporary phpinfo() file afterward because it exposes detailed server configuration.
Fix 1: Remove a stale php_pdo.dll directive
This is the most likely fix on a current PHP installation.
Edit the active php.ini
- Run
php --ini, or usephpinfo()for web PHP. - Open the listed
php.iniin a text editor. - Search for:
extension=php_pdo.dll
- Comment it out by placing a semicolon at the beginning:
;extension=php_pdo.dll
You can remove the line instead, but commenting it out makes the change easy to reverse.
- Search for duplicate entries, including variations such as:
extension="php_pdo.dll"
extension=php_pdo
- Save the file.
Do not remove the driver your application needs. If the application uses MySQL, the relevant entry may be:
extension=pdo_mysql
For SQLite:
extension=pdo_sqlite
For PostgreSQL:
extension=pdo_pgsql
- Restart the service or application that hosts PHP.
For Apache in a control panel, stop and start Apache. For IIS, open IIS Manager, select the server, and use Restart. For a command-line script, close and reopen Command Prompt if environment settings also changed.
Confirm the repair
Run:
php -m
You should see PDO and the required driver, such as pdo_mysql, in the module list.
If the command-line result is correct but the website still fails, the website is using another PHP installation or another php.ini. Check phpinfo() through the web server and repeat the change there.
Fix 2: Correct the database driver
Removing php_pdo.dll does not automatically install a database driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst identify the application’s database:
- WordPress and many PHP applications commonly use MySQL or MariaDB.
- A local utility may use SQLite.
- Enterprise software may use PostgreSQL, ODBC, or SQL Server.
Enable only the driver required by the application. For example:
extension=pdo_mysql
Then verify it:
php -m | findstr /i "PDO pdo_mysql pdo_sqlite pdo_pgsql pdo_odbc pdo_sqlsrv"
If the driver is not present in the PHP package, install the complete PHP distribution or the driver package that matches the exact PHP release. A driver built for another PHP version, architecture, or thread-safety mode may fail to load.
For SQL Server, pdo_sqlsrv is separate from the PDO base component and has its own compatibility requirements. Follow Microsoft’s official PHP-driver documentation rather than copying a similarly named DLL.
Fix 3: Check PHP version, architecture, and thread safety
A PHP extension must match the PHP executable. Confirm all of the following:
- PHP major and minor version
- x86 or x64 architecture
- Thread Safe or Non-Thread Safe build
- Compiler and runtime requirements
- Correct extension directory
Run:
php -v
php -i | findstr /i "Architecture Thread Safety Compiler"
The official Windows PHP downloads distinguish x86 and x64 builds and Thread Safe and Non-Thread Safe builds. Apache generally uses a Thread Safe build, while IIS FastCGI normally uses Non-Thread Safe PHP.
Do not combine:
- An x86 extension with x64 PHP
- A 32-bit extension with 64-bit PHP
- A PHP 5 extension with PHP 7 or PHP 8
- A Thread Safe extension with a Non-Thread Safe build
- An extension from one compiler build with an unrelated PHP package
The safest repair is to install a complete PHP package whose components were built together.
Fix 4: Check extension_dir and dependent files
PHP normally loads extensions from its ext directory. Display the active location:
php -i | findstr /i "extension_dir"
Check that the directory exists and belongs to the PHP installation shown by where php.
A typical configuration might contain:
extension_dir="C:phpext"
If it points to an old PHP folder, correct it in the active php.ini, save the file, and restart PHP.
If the error says the module cannot be found even though the named DLL exists, a dependency may be missing. The PHP extension documentation identifies extension location, dependent DLLs, extension_dir, and compile-time mismatches as common causes.
Do not solve this by copying random DLLs into the PHP folder. Replace the complete PHP installation or install the correct runtime dependencies for that package.
Fix 5: Install the required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
Current official Windows PHP builds require the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for the Visual Studio 2015–2022 compiler families. A missing runtime can prevent PHP or an extension from loading.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Microsoft’s page for the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Choose the architecture that matches PHP, not merely the architecture of Windows:
- 32-bit PHP requires the x86 redistributable.
- 64-bit PHP requires the x64 redistributable.
- ARM64 PHP requires the ARM64 package where applicable.
After installing the runtime:
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open a new Command Prompt.
- Run:
php -v
php -m
If PHP still reports the same error, return to php --ini and confirm that the failing configuration file belongs to this PHP installation.

Fix 6: Repair a bundled PHP environment
If the error comes from XAMPP, WampServer, a hosting control panel, or a vendor application, do not replace one PHP DLL inside the bundle first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese products may ship a tested combination of PHP, Apache, extensions, and configuration files. A standalone PHP download can break that combination.
Use the product’s own repair or reinstall process:
- Close the application or control panel.
- Back up the application’s configuration and data.
- Check the product’s installed version and required PHP version.
- Use its repair option if available.
- Otherwise reinstall the same product version from its official installer.
- Start the bundled services.
- Check the application’s logs for the new PHP path and startup message.
If the bundled application has its own PHP directory, use that directory’s executable when running diagnostics. For example, launching a different php.exe from PATH does not diagnose the PHP used by the bundle.
Fix 7: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a PHP executable or extension. This is possible, but the presence of a quarantine event does not prove that the file was safe or that antivirus caused the original error.
Check the security product’s history:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to the PHP installation.
- Do not restore a file solely because its name is
php_pdo.dll.
Verify the PHP package and its source first. If you are uncertain, remove the incomplete installation, run a malware scan, and reinstall PHP from the official PHP Windows distribution or repair the application that owns it.
Fix 8: Repair damaged Windows components only when symptoms point to Windows
php_pdo.dll is not a Windows-protected system file. DISM and SFC normally cannot restore a PHP extension.
Use them when Windows itself shows broader corruption, such as damaged system applications, failed Windows components, or other unrelated system-file errors.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test PHP again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s guide to using DISM and SFC.
If these commands report that Windows was repaired but PHP still produces the same message, repair PHP rather than repeating SFC and DISM.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating repairs does not identify what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the PHP-owning application remains the definitive fix for a damaged application installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Update related drivers only when the application actually needs them
Device Manager is not a repair tool for php_pdo.dll. PHP extensions are not Windows device drivers, so updating a display, audio, network, or chipset driver will not normally restore PDO.
Use Device Manager only if the application also reports a separate hardware or driver problem:
The Tool Desk

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a PHP database connection, the relevant component is usually a PHP database driver or a database client runtime, not a Device Manager driver. Confirm the application’s documented requirement before installing anything.
If you are managing many outdated Windows drivers manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; its free scan shows the findings, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace installing the matching PHP package or PDO database driver.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 php_pdo.dll
PHP extensions are loaded by PHP through php.ini. They are not normally registered globally in the Windows registry.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes registration for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. A PHP extension is not repaired by registering it with that command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, that is expected for a DLL that was never intended for COM-style registration.
Why copying or downloading the DLL is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and random file-sharing pages. A downloaded php_pdo.dll may be:
- The wrong PHP version
- The wrong architecture
- Built for the wrong thread-safety mode
- Missing its own dependencies
- Corrupted or modified
- Incompatible with the PHP executable
- Malware
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application directory can create architecture conflicts and make later repairs harder.
Use the official PHP Windows distribution or the official installer for the application that includes PHP. Use Microsoft’s official pages for Visual C++ runtimes and Windows repair commands.
Recommended Free Tools
If the error remains after reinstalling PHP
Collect the exact information before trying another replacement:
where php
php -v
php --ini
php -m
php -i | findstr /i "PDO extension_dir Thread Safety Architecture Compiler"
Also record:
- The complete startup warning
- The PHP path used by Apache, IIS, or the application
- The PHP version and architecture
- Whether the build is Thread Safe or Non-Thread Safe
- The application or bundle that owns PHP
- Relevant Apache, IIS, or application log entries
- Antivirus quarantine events, if any
Pay particular attention to multiple PHP versions in PATH. A command-line repair may appear unsuccessful because the web server is loading another installation.
When Windows Features and Device Manager are irrelevant
Turning on optional Windows features such as .NET Framework, Hyper-V, or Windows Subsystem for Linux does not install PHP PDO. Do not enable unrelated Windows features to repair this error.
Similarly, Device Manager cannot install php_pdo.dll. Use it only for a separate hardware-driver problem. The correct repair path is PHP configuration, the matching PHP package, the required PDO database driver, or the bundled application that owns PHP.

Is php_pdo.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a PHP component associated with PHP Data Objects. It should not be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does current PHP need php_pdo.dll?
Usually not on current official Windows builds. PDO is normally built in, while database-specific drivers are enabled separately.
Should I add extension=php_pdo.dll to php.ini?
Usually no. If a current PHP installation reports that directive, comment it out and enable the required driver, such as extension=pdo_mysql.
Is pdo_mysql the same as php_pdo.dll?
No. php_pdo.dll historically supplied the PDO base layer. pdo_mysql is the driver that connects PDO to MySQL-compatible databases.
Why does PHP say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, the wrong extension_dir, or a version, architecture, compiler, or thread-safety mismatch.
Can regsvr32 fix php_pdo.dll?
No. PHP loads extensions through php.ini; regsvr32 is not the appropriate repair method.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Only when there are broader signs of Windows component corruption. These commands do not normally restore a PHP extension.
What is the safest solution for an old PHP application?
Identify the exact PHP version and build required by the application, then reinstall the complete matching PHP distribution or repair the application’s own bundled PHP environment.
