You may see php_pdo_mssql.dll in an error such as “Unable to load dynamic library” or “The specified module could not be found.” A separate could not find driver message means PHP started, but the requested database driver was not loaded.
The 60-second answer
php_pdo_mssql.dll is a historical PHP extension, not a Windows system DLL. Its description, “DB-LIB (MS SQL, Sybase),” identifies PHP’s old PDO driver for the DB-LIB interface.

The correct fix depends on your PHP version:
- PHP 5.x: restore a complete, matching PHP installation and its legacy dependencies.
- PHP 7 or later: do not copy this DLL into the PHP folder. PHP 7 removed the old
mssqlextension family. Migrate to Microsoft’s supportedPDO_SQLSRVdriver and Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server. - Any version: do not place the file in
System32, runregsvr32, or download a random copy from a DLL website.
PHP 5.6 has been unsupported since 31 December 2018, so treat a legacy repair as a temporary compatibility measure rather than a modern deployment strategy.
What causes the error
A typical startup warning looks like this:
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'c:/php/ext/php_pdo_mssql.dll' - The specified module could not be found.
The named file may genuinely be absent, but Windows can display the same message when a dependency used by that file is missing. Historical PHP Windows installations could depend on components such as ntwdblib.dll and the correct compiler runtime.
#1 Best Overall
The common causes are:
- PHP 7 or 8 is using a PHP 5-era configuration.
- The extension is missing from PHP’s configured
extension_dir. - A dependency is missing even though
php_pdo_mssql.dllexists. - The extension has the wrong architecture, PHP API, compiler build, or thread-safety mode.
- The command line and web server use different PHP installations.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the extension.
- The application has not been migrated from the obsolete DB-LIB driver.
Step 1: Identify the PHP installation actually running
Before replacing anything, determine which PHP executable and configuration are active.
Open Command Prompt and run:
where php
php -v
php --ini
php -i | findstr /i extension_dir
php -m
Check the results carefully:
where phpshows the PHP executable found throughPATH.php -vshows the PHP major version, architecture, and usually TS or NTS information.php --inishows the loadedphp.ini.extension_dirshows the directory where PHP expects extensions.php -mlists successfully loaded modules.
Now check whether the file is in that exact extension directory. Replace the path with the one shown by extension_dir:
dir C:pathtophpextphp_pdo_mssql.dll
If Command Prompt reports that the file cannot be found, the extension is absent from the active PHP installation. If the file exists but PHP still cannot load it, suspect a dependency or build mismatch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the web server separately
A browser and the command line may use different PHP installations.
If you can create a temporary PHP diagnostic page in the application directory, use:
<?php phpinfo();
Open that page through the web server and compare:
- Loaded Configuration File
- extension_dir
- PHP Version
- Architecture
- Thread Safety
Delete the diagnostic page after checking it. A CLI repair will not fix a web server that is loading another php.ini.
Step 2: Decide whether this is legacy PHP or a migration case
PHP 5.x: repair the matching installation
If php -v reports PHP 5.x and the application genuinely requires DB-LIB, use the official PHP for Windows archive that matches the original deployment as closely as possible.

You must match all of these:
- PHP version and release branch
- x86 or x64 architecture
- Thread Safe or Non-Thread Safe build
- Compiler/runtime generation
- The application’s web-server integration
Do not copy only one DLL from a different PHP package. A PHP extension is compiled against a particular PHP API and build environment. A file from another release can produce a loader error even when its filename is identical.
Download a complete PHP package from the official PHP for Windows archive, extract it into a dedicated PHP directory, and copy or recreate the application configuration using that package’s sample php.ini. Keep the old installation available until the application has been tested.
Then:
- Open the active
php.inishown byphp --ini. - Confirm that
extension_dirpoints to the new installation’sextdirectory. - Enable the PDO core extension if that PHP release requires it.
- Enable the old driver only if that exact PHP build supports it.
A historical configuration may look like this:
extension=php_pdo.dll
extension=php_pdo_mssql.dll
Older PHP releases differed in configuration syntax, so use the sample configuration shipped with the matching PHP package as the authority.

Restart the relevant service after changing php.ini:
- For Apache, restart the Apache service.
- For IIS, restart the site or IIS service.
- For CLI testing, simply open a new Command Prompt and run
php -m.
Verify the result:
php -m | findstr /i pdo
php -i | findstr /i "PDO drivers"
If the extension loads, the startup warning should disappear. If you still receive “The specified module could not be found,” continue to the dependency and build checks below.
PHP 7 or later: migrate instead
Do not search for php_pdo_mssql.dll for PHP 7 or PHP 8. PHP 7 removed the old mssql extension family, so this legacy DLL is not compatible with a current PHP installation.
The modern replacement is Microsoft’s separate PDO_SQLSRV driver. It is not the same binary and does not use the same dependency stack. Microsoft provides the SQL Server PHP drivers in variants matched to the PHP version, architecture, and TS/NTS build.
Install the components in this order:
- PHP runtime.
- Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server.
- Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server.
- IIS or Apache configuration, if applicable.
Microsoft’s SQL Server PHP driver environment setup explains the prerequisites.
After downloading the matching driver package, place its DLLs in PHP’s configured extension directory. The configuration entries use names similar to these:
extension=php_sqlsrv_83_ts.dll
extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_83_ts.dll
The suffix is only an example. It must match your installed PHP version and TS/NTS build. Microsoft documents the matching and loading process in Load the Microsoft PHP SQL drivers.
Restart the web server, then verify:
php -m | findstr /i "sqlsrv pdo"
php -i | findstr /i "PDO drivers"
Your application may also need its connection code changed from the old DB-LIB driver to sqlsrv or pdo_sqlsrv. Installing a new DLL alone may not complete the migration.
Step 3: Repair a missing or mismatched PHP package
If you are maintaining PHP 5.x, the safest repair is a complete reinstall of the matching package.

- Back up the application directory and current

- Extract it to a new directory, such as
C:PHP-legacy. - Confirm that
C:PHP-legacyextcontains the required extensions. - Set
extension_dirto that directory. - Update the web server’s PHP handler or
PATHif necessary. - Run the diagnostic commands again.
For example:
php --ini
php -i | findstr /i extension_dir
dir C:PHP-legacyextphp_pdo_mssql.dll
php -m
Do not mix a 32-bit extension with 64-bit PHP. The reverse is also invalid. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit PHP process must use 32-bit extensions and matching database components.
Thread safety matters as well:
- TS is commonly used when PHP is loaded directly as an Apache module.
- NTS is commonly used with IIS FastCGI and CLI.
A TS/NTS mismatch can prevent loading even when the PHP version number appears correct.
Step 4: Investigate missing dependencies
If this command confirms that the file exists:
dir C:pathtophpextphp_pdo_mssql.dll
but PHP reports that the module cannot be found, the missing item may be a dependency. A historical PHP bug report documented ntwdblib.dll as a dependency in an old Windows configuration.
Do not download that dependency from an unverified DLL site. Reinstall the complete legacy PHP package and its documented database client components, or migrate to the current ODBC-based SQL Server driver.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Also check the Visual C++ runtime required by the specific PHP build. Installing a current runtime does not make a PHP 5 extension compatible with PHP 8. It only addresses a runtime dependency when the PHP and extension builds are otherwise compatible.
A useful test is to run the PHP executable directly:
C:pathtophpphp.exe -v
If the warning appears before PHP prints its version, the problem is in PHP startup loading. If the command works but the website fails, the web server is probably using a different PHP installation or configuration.
Step 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an extension, although you should verify the event rather than assume it.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the PHP directory.
- Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from a trusted official PHP package and you have verified its provenance.
- Reinstall the complete PHP package if the file was deleted or altered.
Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches the startup warning.
Step 6: Repair Windows components only when evidence supports it
php_pdo_mssql.dll is a PHP application component, not a Windows component. Windows repair tools normally will not restore it.
Use DISM and SFC only if other Windows programs also report damaged or missing system files.
Rank #4
Open Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Wait for each command to finish, restart Windows, and test PHP again.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is not required for a PHP-specific reinstall.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the PHP extension is present. Continue repairing the PHP installation instead.
Step 7: Check drivers only when the application uses a wider database stack
The old DB-LIB extension and the modern SQL Server driver depend on different database components. If the application has other database connectivity problems, verify that the ODBC driver architecture matches the PHP process.

To inspect installed applications:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for ODBC or Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server.
- Confirm that the installed driver matches the PHP process and application architecture.
Do not use Device Manager to repair php_pdo_mssql.dll. Device Manager handles hardware drivers, not PHP extensions. If the computer also has unrelated hardware-driver problems, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the affected devices; the driver installation is performed by the full version, and it does not replace the required PHP SQL Server package.
What not to do
Do not copy the DLL into System32
php_pdo_mssql.dll belongs in PHP’s configured extension_dir, commonly a folder such as:
C:phpext
It does not belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Copying it into a Windows directory can create confusion and will not correct PHP’s configured extension path.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. PHP extensions are loaded by PHP through php.ini, not registered as general Windows components.
Running this is not a valid repair:
regsvr32 php_pdo_mssql.dll
Do not download a replacement from a DLL site
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong PHP API, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible compiler build. Even an authentic-looking file may not include dependencies such as the historical DB-LIB client components.
Use a complete official PHP archive for a legacy repair, or Microsoft’s official SQL Server PHP driver and ODBC packages for a current installation.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
DirectX, .NET, Windows Features, and unrelated Visual C++ packages do not make an obsolete PHP extension compatible with a newer PHP release. Enable Windows Features only when your application specifically requires a Windows component such as IIS or CGI.

Some older applications depend on PHP 5 behavior and cannot be moved immediately. In that case:
- Keep the legacy PHP installation isolated from current PHP versions.
- Use the exact matching architecture and TS/NTS build.
- Reinstall the complete official PHP package rather than individual DLLs.
- Restrict access to the old application where possible.
- Plan a migration to

Do not install PHP 5 extensions into a PHP 7 or PHP 8 directory. That combination will not become supported through configuration changes.
FAQ
Is php_pdo_mssql.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a historical PHP extension from the PHP Group. It is associated with the old DB-LIB PDO driver for Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase.
Which PHP versions contain it?
It belongs to PHP 5.x-era Windows builds. The exact binary depends on the PHP release, architecture, compiler, and thread-safety variant. There is no single universal version, file size, or checksum.
Can I use it with PHP 7 or PHP 8?
No. PHP 7 removed the old mssql extension family. Use Microsoft’s PDO_SQLSRV driver with the Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server, then update the application’s connection configuration if required.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
The file may have a missing dependency, such as a historical DB-LIB component or required compiler runtime. It can also be the wrong architecture or incompatible with the active PHP API.
Is php_pdo_sqlsrv.dll the same file?
No. php_pdo_sqlsrv.dll is Microsoft’s separate modern SQL Server PDO driver. It requires the matching Microsoft PHP driver package and Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server.
Will SFC restore this file?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while php_pdo_mssql.dll belongs to a third-party PHP installation.
