PHP Threads and Workers for a Busy WooCommerce Store

Busy WooCommerce stores should size PHP-FPM child processes from real memory, CPU, database, and latency measurements—not a universal worker formula. This guide explains safe limits, queue isolation, Action Scheduler defaults, monitoring, and tuning steps.

There is no universal PHP worker number for WooCommerce. A store is served by PHP-FPM child processes (often called “threads” in hosting dashboards), and the useful limit is the number of children your CPU, memory, database, and external services can sustain at the same time. Add workers only while those resources have measured headroom; beyond that point, queueing, database contention, and checkout latency get worse.

What “PHP threads” means on WooCommerce hosting

On conventional PHP hosting, WooCommerce requests are handled by PHP-FPM, the FastCGI process manager documented by the PHP Documentation Group as a primary PHP FastCGI implementation with features intended for heavily loaded sites. PHP-FPM uses child processes in one or more pools. A dashboard may label the setting “PHP threads,” but the unit you need to size is normally a PHP-FPM child process, not a thread inside one process.

Each child handles one request at a time. A child may be serving a product page, waiting on MySQL, running checkout logic, calling a payment gateway, or executing an administration request. When every child is busy, new requests wait in the web-server or PHP-FPM queue. Increasing the child limit can let more requests run concurrently, but it cannot create more CPU, memory bandwidth, database connections, disk I/O, or payment-provider capacity.

PHP-FPM pools can use static, dynamic, or ondemand child-spawning modes. The right mode and limits depend on traffic shape and available resources; the PHP manual also documents status reporting and slow logs, which are essential for sizing rather than optional diagnostics.

How to determine a worker ceiling

Use measurements from your own store. Documentation describes how PHP-FPM and WooCommerce queues work, but it does not publish a universal worker formula or a guaranteed requests-per-second figure.

  1. Measure a representative child. Observe memory used by PHP-FPM children while they process real WooCommerce requests. Include cart, checkout, account, REST, and administration traffic, not just a cached product page. A checkout request that loads several extensions can have a very different footprint from a front-page request.
  2. Reserve shared resources first. Keep memory and CPU available for the database, web server, object cache, operating system, monitoring, and other services. Also account for database connection limits, upstream APIs, and any queue runner that will execute on the same machine.
  3. Set a conservative pool limit. Configure the maximum number of children so that the machine retains headroom during normal peaks. A theoretical maximum based only on total RAM is unsafe because the database and the operating system also need memory, and PHP children do not all consume an identical amount.
  4. Observe saturation. Track active and idle children, “max children reached” events, request latency, slow-log entries, memory pressure, database CPU and locks, and HTTP 5xx responses. A pool that is constantly at its ceiling is a capacity signal; it is not proof that adding children will help.
  5. Change one limit at a time. Compare ordinary traffic and a sale-like burst after each change. Separate checkout, cart, account, administration, and API measurements so an improvement in one class of request does not hide a regression in another.

A practical ceiling is therefore an operational decision: the highest concurrency that leaves enough resources for the rest of the stack while keeping latency and errors within your store’s targets.

Why adding workers may not make checkout faster

More children help when requests are waiting for an available PHP process and the underlying services still have capacity. They do not help when requests are waiting on a saturated database, locked rows, slow disk, a payment gateway, an overloaded object cache, or CPU that is already fully used.

Once those resources are the bottleneck, additional children create contention. More PHP processes can compete for CPU, consume memory, open more database connections, and increase simultaneous calls to external services. The result can be longer p95 and p99 checkout latency even though the configured worker count is higher. If memory pressure causes swapping or the operating system kills processes, reliability gets worse as well.

Use PHP-FPM status and slow logs to distinguish these cases. If all children are busy but database CPU and locks are low, a cautious increase may remove a PHP queue. If database waits, memory pressure, or upstream delays dominate, raising the PHP limit only makes the queue move downstream.

Keep customer requests separate from background work

Understand WP-Cron’s visitor dependency

WooCommerce explains that WP-Cron is triggered when the site receives a request. A low-traffic store can therefore delay scheduled work, while a high-traffic store can perform frequent cron checks and add load to visitor requests. A real server cron can trigger WP-Cron independently of visitors, making scheduling predictable and removing that timing coupling.

Know what Action Scheduler does by default

Action Scheduler is the queue used by WooCommerce and many extensions. Its documented defaults are deliberately conservative:

  • It claims batches of 25 actions.
  • It processes a request for up to 30 seconds by default.
  • It runs one concurrent batch by default.
  • It stops when memory or time limits are reached and continues through later requests.

Those limits protect a general-purpose web request, but they also mean a large backlog drains gradually. Increasing loopback concurrency can substantially increase server load, and the Action Scheduler performance documentation identifies WP-CLI as the better method for higher throughput when it is available.

Protect interactive capacity

For a busy store, run due actions from a server cron or WP-CLI process and consider placing heavy queue work in a separate PHP-FPM pool or on a separate worker host. Keep checkout, cart, account, REST, and payment-callback capacity in a pool that background jobs cannot exhaust.

Typical candidates for the background pool include imports, email generation, webhooks, subscription renewals, image or feed processing, and other scheduled actions. Isolation does not make an expensive job cheaper; it prevents that job from taking every interactive worker during a traffic peak.

Architecture choices

Design Isolation Throughput Checkout latency during queue bursts Failure containment Operational cost
One shared PHP-FPM pool None; background and customer requests compete for the same children Simple, but bounded by interactive traffic Can rise sharply when long actions occupy children Retries and failed actions consume web capacity Lowest complexity
Separate web and queue pools on one host Worker limits are protected per workload Better control; both pools still share CPU, memory, database, and disk More stable if the queue pool has a strict ceiling Queue failures are less likely to block checkout, but can still exhaust host resources Moderate configuration and monitoring
Dedicated queue worker host or process Strongest separation from web PHP Can be tuned for sustained queue throughput Best protection when capacity is correctly reserved Failures are isolated from the web host, subject to database and API dependencies Highest infrastructure and operational complexity

Choose by measuring isolation, queue-drain speed, checkout p95/p99 latency, retry behavior, operator control, and the cost of another pool or host—not by choosing the largest advertised worker number.

A safe tuning sequence

1. Establish the bottleneck

Record PHP-FPM active and idle children, max-children reach events, slow-log traces, request latency, memory pressure, database CPU and locks, and Action Scheduler pending and failed counts. A worker ceiling is a limit to investigate, not a performance target.

2. Reserve interactive workers

Define the capacity that cart, checkout, account, REST, and payment callbacks must retain during a peak. Prevent imports, emails, webhooks, renewals, and other long-running actions from consuming that reserved capacity.

3. Start with conservative queue defaults

Leave the documented 25-action, 30-second, one-batch behavior in place while you establish a baseline. Increase batch size only when actions are short and their memory use is known. Increase concurrency only after measuring CPU, memory, database connections, and downstream API headroom. The project documentation warns that careless loopback concurrency can take down a site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Move high volume to explicit scheduling

Use a real server cron to invoke WP-CLI or another dedicated queue process when the backlog or schedule requires predictable execution. This removes dependence on visitor requests and lets you assign queue work to the pool or host intended for it.

5. Re-measure every change

After each adjustment, compare checkout p95 and p99 latency, PHP-FPM saturation, database load, queue age, failed actions, and HTTP error rates during normal traffic and sale-like bursts. Keep the change only if the interactive experience improves without creating an unhealthy queue or resource ceiling elsewhere.

Monitoring signals and what they mean

Signal What it tells you Useful response
Active children at the limit and max-children events Requests are competing for PHP-FPM slots Check database and memory headroom before cautiously raising the limit; otherwise isolate or reduce long requests
Many idle children with slow requests PHP worker count is not the immediate bottleneck Inspect slow logs, database waits, external APIs, and application code
Growing Action Scheduler pending age Due work is arriving faster than the queue runner drains it Use explicit server scheduling, inspect failed actions, and increase throughput only with measured headroom
Database CPU, locks, or connection saturation More PHP concurrency would push pressure into the database Address query and database capacity before adding workers
Memory pressure or swapping The process ceiling is too high for the host’s total workload Lower concurrency or add memory; do not treat swap as usable PHP capacity
5xx responses during queue bursts Background work is exhausting a shared dependency or timeout budget Separate pools, reduce batch/concurrency, and inspect the failing action and dependency

Common mistakes and recovery paths

Copying a worker number from another store

Two stores with the same product count can have different plugins, checkout paths, PHP versions, database sizes, and traffic patterns. Replace copied settings with a measurement of your own representative child and shared-resource headroom.

Counting cached page hits as PHP capacity

Full-page cache hits may not reach PHP at all, while cart, checkout, account, REST, and payment callbacks usually do. Size and test against the uncached requests that matter to revenue.

Raising Action Scheduler concurrency first

Loopback batches can multiply PHP, database, and API load. Restore the documented defaults if latency or errors rise, then move execution to controlled server scheduling and increase one variable only after measuring.

Letting retries share the checkout pool

Failed or repeatedly retried actions can occupy workers for long periods. Give queue processing its own ceiling and monitor failed counts and queue age so a retry storm cannot silently consume customer capacity.

Changing several limits at once

Changing PHP children, database connections, batch size, and queue concurrency together prevents you from identifying the cause of an improvement or regression. Roll back to the last known state and change a single limit with a defined observation window.

What Action Scheduler’s documented scale does—and does not—prove

The Action Scheduler project documentation reports that every month it processes millions of subscription payments, WooCommerce webhooks, emails, and other events across the project’s installed base. It also reports live sites with queues exceeding 50,000 jobs and resource-intensive workloads above 10,000 actions per hour in 10 concurrent queues.

Those are documented project capabilities observed on particular sites, not a promise that every hosting plan or store will achieve those rates. Your database schema, action cost, memory limit, external APIs, PHP-FPM pool, and scheduling method determine the result.

Practical deployment checklist

  • Identify the PHP-FPM pool and confirm whether the hosting dashboard’s “threads” label represents child processes.
  • Capture active, idle, and max-children metrics plus slow-log traces before changing limits.
  • Measure representative cart, checkout, account, REST, admin, and payment-callback memory use.
  • Reserve CPU, memory, database connections, object-cache capacity, and upstream API budget before setting a ceiling.
  • Keep Action Scheduler at 25 actions, 30 seconds, and one concurrent batch until a baseline exists.
  • Use server cron and WP-CLI or a dedicated queue process when visitor-triggered WP-Cron is too slow or couples background work to traffic.
  • Separate queue workers from interactive workers when long actions affect checkout p95/p99 latency.
  • Change one setting, test normal and burst traffic, and record latency, queue age, failures, and 5xx responses.

The decision in one sentence

Set PHP-FPM workers to the highest measured concurrency that your complete stack can sustain while preserving protected checkout capacity; then run WooCommerce background work with explicit scheduling and isolation instead of assuming that a larger worker count alone will make checkout faster.
