Choose physical Nintendo games if you want a removable game card, a box for your shelf, or a straightforward way to lend a copy. Choose digital if you want to download games, switch between installed titles without changing cards, and keep your library with your account. For Switch 2, check the packaging: a Game-Key Card is physical, but it does not contain the full game data.
How to choose between physical and digital Nintendo games
The best format depends on how you play and share—not on a different version of the game. Nintendo says Switch 2 games offer the same experience in packaged and digital formats. The practical differences are access, storage, lending, price, and whether a physical release contains the game data or only an activation key.

- Pick physical if you value a card you can hand to someone else, want a boxed copy, or prefer not to make every game dependent on a download.
- Pick digital if you want to move between installed games without swapping cards and prefer purchases associated with your Nintendo Account.
- Check the specific release if buying a boxed Switch 2 game: confirm whether it is a full game card or a Game-Key Card, and compare the current price and storage requirements.
Neither format guarantees resale value or perpetual access. Nintendo’s current account and service terms determine how digital purchases can be accessed; a physical copy still depends on having the card and compatible hardware.
What does a physical Switch 2 game card contain?
Full game cards
A full game card contains game data on the card, which can reduce the initial download needed to start playing. Updates or title-specific requirements may still require downloads, so do not assume every physical release is playable entirely offline from the moment you open the box.

Game-Key Cards
A Game-Key Card is a physical item, but it does not hold the full game. Nintendo said in its 2025 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A that a Game-Key Card “does not contain the full game data for the game itself; instead, it stores a key to activate the software.” The game must be downloaded, so you need an internet connection for the download and enough available storage. Nintendo says Switch 2 storage can be internal or on a microSD Express card; the amount required varies by title.
Before buying a boxed Switch 2 release, check its listing and packaging for the release type. If downloading the full game is a problem—or you specifically want game data on the card—do not treat “physical” as proof that the card contains the complete game.

How digital game access and sharing work
Virtual Game Cards on up to two consoles
Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card system lets an account load or eject digital purchases between consoles. An account can have up to two consoles that load its Virtual Game Cards. Once a card is loaded on a console, any user on that console can play the game. This is a useful household option, but it is not a blanket promise that one purchase can be played simultaneously by two people on any two consoles.
Online licensing on another console
Nintendo also supports playing digital purchases on consoles that cannot load the Virtual Game Card. That access uses an online license and requires the console to be connected to the internet; under this mode, other users on that console cannot play the games. The two access methods have different conditions, so check Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide and multi-console instructions before planning shared or simultaneous play.

Lending to family group members
Digital lending is possible through Virtual Game Cards, but it is limited to members of your Nintendo Account family group. Play Nintendo describes a lending period of 14 days unless the borrower returns the card sooner. Consult Play Nintendo’s sharing guidance for the current conditions before relying on a loan for a particular game.
Handing over a physical card
A physical card can be handed to someone else, but only the person with access to the card can use that copy at a time. That makes lending simple, but it also means you cannot play from the same card while someone else has it.

Does physical or digital cost less?
There is no universal format winner on price. Nintendo’s policy says that beginning in May 2026, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, newly released Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 have a different MSRP from their physical versions. This is a scoped pricing policy, not a promise that digital will always be cheaper: Nintendo also says retail partners set their own prices and individual title pricing may vary.
Compare the exact game, edition, country, retailer, and current sale price before choosing. A retailer’s physical price and an eShop price can differ, and prices can change. Nintendo says the different MSRPs reflect the costs associated with producing and distributing each format; it also says the packaged and digital versions offer the same experience. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 game pricing guidance.

Storage, downloads, and internet needs
Digital purchases require downloading the software and keeping enough available storage on the console or supported storage card. Nintendo’s download guidance lists a compatible Switch or Switch 2 console, Nintendo Account/eShop access, an internet connection, and adequate storage as requirements. Game-Key Card software also needs a download. A full-data game card may reduce the initial download, but updates and individual game requirements can still involve downloads.
There is no one storage figure that applies to every Nintendo game. Check the specific title’s listing for download size and requirements, and ensure any storage card you buy is supported by your console. Nintendo’s Digital Game Purchases FAQ and Virtual Game Card guide explain download and storage basics.
Save data is separate from the game card
Your save is not stored on the game card, so choosing physical does not mean your progress travels with the cartridge. Nintendo describes save transfer between consoles and Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud Backup as options, but cloud backup is available only for supported games and requires an active membership. Check whether a particular title supports cloud saves before counting on that route. Nintendo’s multi-console instructions cover transfer and cloud-backup options.
