Yes. An original Nintendo Switch can use a microSD Express card, but it will read and write data at standard microSD-card speed—not Express speed. Nintendo says Express cards are supported up to 2TB and require an internet system update the first time you use one.

What happens when you use an Express card in the original Switch?

The card is compatible, but the original Switch does not gain a speed boost from its Express interface. Nintendo says that on a Nintendo Switch console, a microSD Express card’s data reading and writing speed is equivalent to that of a microSD card. The card’s faster standard therefore does not make games load or install faster on this console.

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. The first time you use an Express card, the console needs an internet system update.

Should you buy Express or standard microSD?

What you need Suitable card What to know
Extra storage for an original Switch only Standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC Express is not a speed upgrade on the original Switch. Nintendo recommends UHS-I cards with transfer speeds of 60–95 MB/sec for standard microSD use; its microSD Card FAQ says higher transfer speed is better for gameplay experience.
One card to use with both an original Switch and Switch 2 microSD Express Nintendo lists Express cards as compatible with the original Switch, while Switch 2 requires microSD Express. On the original Switch, the card operates at standard microSD speed.

Choose based on whether you need Switch 2 compatibility, along with the capacity and price you find. Nintendo’s pages do not establish a current price comparison, so check current retailer listings if cost is a deciding factor. Nintendo lists a Samsung microSD Express Card 256GB for Switch 2; the listing gives June 5, 2025 as its release date.

What can the card store—and what can’t it store?
