Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire has four continuing romance routes with the Watcher: Aloth, Maia Rua, Tekēhu, and Xoti. Serafen has a limited casual encounter rather than a full continuing romance. Eder and Pallegina are not Watcher romance options, and sidekicks cannot be romanced.
Relationships are shaped by choices and events, and companions can develop relationships with one another as well as with the Watcher. The ending slides can reflect those relationship states; specific examples are marked as spoilers below.

Who can you romance in Pillars of Eternity II?
| Character | Relationship with the Watcher |
|---|---|
| Aloth | Continuing romance route |
| Maia Rua | Continuing romance route |
| Tekēhu | Continuing romance route |
| Xoti | Continuing romance route |
| Serafen | Limited one-off casual encounter, not a continuing romance route |
| Eder | Not romanceable by the Watcher |
| Pallegina | Not romanceable by the Watcher |
| Sidekicks | Not romanceable |
That distinction explains why character lists sometimes differ: RPG Site includes Serafen in its romance roster summary, while the more precise description is a limited encounter rather than a continuing relationship. RPG Site’s 2018 guide also identifies Eder and Pallegina as unavailable romance options. RPG Site’s romance guide and the Pillars of Eternity Wiki romance overview cover these distinctions.
How Deadfire’s relationship system works
Romance is part of a wider companion relationship system, not a separate affection meter that operates independently of the story. Obsidian describes it this way: “New to Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is the companion relationships system, where companions will not only engage with you, but each other, depending on the decisions you make and events they experience in the world.” See Obsidian’s official game page.

Companions have backstories, quests, dialogue, and reputations; the official Deadfire game manual distinguishes companions from sidekicks and adventurers. In practice, choices and events shape how characters respond. The sources establish the available routes and some relationship outcomes, but do not provide a fully verified, patch-specific set of dialogue gates or thresholds for every romance. A single response or universal approval score should not be treated as a guaranteed trigger.
Companion relationships that can affect your party
Maia and Xoti
Maia and Xoti can develop a relationship with each other. RPG Site says they need time together in the active party for it to develop, so leaving either character out may mean missing this companion storyline. Their relationship is separate from choosing either one as a Watcher romance.

Xoti and Eder
Xoti can have a one-sided crush on Eder, but the guide describes it as not developing into a relationship. This is not an additional romance route.
These companion-to-companion possibilities make party composition relevant beyond combat: who travels together can affect which interactions and relationship developments you see.

Romance triggers: what is and is not established
The available sources confirm the four continuing romance options but do not establish a complete, dependable walkthrough of every dialogue choice, quest milestone, or trigger for each route. They also do not support ranking the routes by difficulty. Treat individual character interactions as story-dependent, and avoid relying on an alleged universal approval threshold as a guarantee.

Relationship flags can be reflected in companion ending slides, but romance is only one part of a character’s ending. Personal quest decisions and faction-related conditions can determine adjacent outcomes as well.
- Maia: her relationship outcome can depend in part on whether she remains in the Rauatai navy.
- Xoti and Maia: the endings reference relationship and breakup outcomes for their relationship with each other.
- Tekēhu: the endings distinguish an active Watcher romance from an unfinished relationship, as well as breakup or positive and negative relationship outcomes.
These are conditional distinctions, not a promise that a romance alone determines a character’s final slide. See the Deadfire endings reference for the documented outcomes.
