Obsidian announced the update as live on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and the Xbox PC App on April 6, 2026, and says players can switch combat modes during a playthrough.
Is Pillars of Eternity turn-based now?
Yes. The update adds a turn-based option to the original Pillars of Eternity; it does not replace Real-Time with Pause. Turn-based combat had previously appeared in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, but this update brings the option to the first game. Obsidian’s release announcement names Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and the Xbox PC App as platforms where the mode is live. Read Obsidian’s April 6, 2026 announcement.
Can you switch between turn-based and Real-Time with Pause?
Yes. Obsidian says players can change between the two combat modes during a playthrough, so choosing one at the outset does not lock the campaign to it. The studio described that flexibility as a way to let players decide how they want to play.
How does turn-based combat work in the original game?
Obsidian’s beta notes describe a turn system in which character speed influences turn order and pacing. The studio also said it adjusted combat lethality. Weapon swapping, drinking a potion, and enabling modal abilities count as free actions, but each has per-turn limits. These details come from the beta announcement, so they explain the design rather than serving as a complete account of every later balance change. See Obsidian’s beta announcement and notes.

#1 Best Overall
- Monster Taming Gameplay: Hunt and capture seventy mythical creatures from world mythology across strategic rounds, building a powerful collection that determines your path to victory
- Drafting Strategy Card Game: Make tactical decisions through card drafting and set collection mechanics that reward careful planning and clever positioning against two to four opponents
- Mythological Depth: Explore creatures and spirits from global mythology, each with unique effects and abilities that create fresh strategic opportunities in every playthrough
- Social Gaming Experience: Enjoy intense forty-minute sessions perfect for game nights with friends and family, balancing accessibility for ages fourteen and up with genuine strategic complexity
- Renegade Studios Craftsmanship: Premium card components and thematic artwork deliver quality gameplay that captures the epic adventure of taming fantastical beasts and dragons
The practical distinction is timing. Real-Time with Pause lets combat unfold continuously while you pause to issue orders; turn-based combat gives actions a more discrete sequence. The available official notes describe those design choices, but do not establish that either mode is faster, easier, or better for every player.
Which combat mode should you choose?
- Choose Real-Time with Pause if you prefer the original combat rhythm, with actions unfolding continuously and pauses used to direct the party.
- Choose Turn-Based Mode if you want combat organized into clearer turns and action sequences.
- Try both if you are unsure: Obsidian says you can change modes during a playthrough.
Speed still matters in the turn-based system because it influences turn order and pacing. The notes also describe limited free actions, so the mode is not simply a pause-based version of unrestricted action selection.

Has the turn-based mode received updates since release?
Obsidian’s July 6, 2026 patch 3.9.5.0 notes list fixes affecting Turn-Based Mode, including initiative, spell effects, accuracy, an encounter, UI messaging, and movement behavior. The patch was listed for Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and the Xbox PC platform. This shows that the mode continued to receive tuning through that patch; it does not establish what the newest patch is after that date. Read the patch 3.9.5.0 notes.
Is the update confirmed for console versions?
Obsidian’s April 6 announcement specifically names four PC storefronts: Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and the Xbox PC App. It does not confirm console availability, so that announcement alone cannot establish whether the update is available on PlayStation or other console editions. Check the relevant platform’s current update information before buying or returning to a console copy.

Does this make a replay worthwhile?
It gives returning players a genuinely different way to handle combat, particularly if they want to experience the same campaign through turn sequencing rather than Real-Time with Pause. But a replay is a matter of preference, not a requirement: the update adds an option, and players can also switch modes during an existing playthrough.
