Pilotwings 64 is a Nintendo 64 flying-skills game, not a combat flight campaign. First released in 1996, it asks you to master a Hang Glider, Rocket Belt and Gyrocopter through increasingly difficult flight tests. You can play it on original Nintendo 64 hardware or through the Nintendo 64 library included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, subject to current regional availability.

What is Pilotwings 64?

Pilotwings 64 is a flight challenge game built around learning to control different aircraft and completing specific objectives. Nintendo describes players choosing from six pilots and taking on tests intended to prove their flying ability. The game’s appeal is its varied handling and open environments, rather than a conventional story campaign.

Nintendo’s October 12, 2022 announcement described the premise as: “Take to the skies and master a Hang Glider, Rocket Belt, and Gyrocopter in a journey to become an ace pilot.” Nintendo’s announcement also confirms the game’s 1996 Nintendo 64 release.

How do you play Pilotwings 64?

You select a pilot and attempt flight tests using three very different craft: the Hang Glider, Rocket Belt and Gyrocopter. Objectives vary by test; Nintendo UK describes tasks involving takeoffs, landings, staying aloft, fuel, altitude, wind and navigating routes. Success depends on managing each craft’s distinct movement rather than simply reaching a destination.

License progression

The license path advances through Beginner’s Class, Class A and Class B before Pilot Class. Nintendo UK lists 24 tests in Pilot Class. The sequence gives the game a clear progression: early tests introduce basic control, while later ones ask for more precise flight and route management.

Bonus activities

Outside the main flight-test framework, four bonus games add variety: Sky Diving, Birdman, Jumble Hopper and human Cannonball. These activities broaden the kinds of challenges on offer, but they do not turn the game into a large narrative campaign.

What aircraft are in Pilotwings 64?

Craft Role in the game
Hang Glider One of the three principal craft used for flight tests.
Rocket Belt A powered flight option with handling distinct from the glider.
Gyrocopter A third aircraft type used in the game’s flying challenges.

Nintendo identifies these three craft, but the available official descriptions do not provide a complete technical breakdown of their controls. The important practical point is that each handles differently, so mastering one does not automatically solve tests using another.

Can you play Pilotwings 64 on Nintendo Switch?

Yes. Nintendo announced that Pilotwings 64 is available through the Nintendo 64 game library for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. The announcement is dated October 12, 2022; check Nintendo’s announcement and the current Nintendo Switch Online page for your region to confirm present availability and subscription terms.

Option What you need Best fit
Original cartridge A Nintendo 64 console and a cartridge in working condition. Players who want original hardware or are collecting Nintendo 64 games. Check the cartridge’s region, condition and tested status; verify whether a listing is cartridge-only or complete in box.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack An eligible membership and access to the Nintendo 64 library in your region. Players who already use the service and prefer to play on Switch without sourcing original hardware.

Which route makes sense depends on the hardware you own and whether original-hardware play or subscription access matters more to you. Cartridge prices and seller inventory vary, so compare current listings rather than relying on a fixed price.

Is Pilotwings 64 worth playing?

Nintendo Life’s retrospective review praises the large environments and flight controls, while noting that the measured pace may not suit every player. That is one outlet’s critical assessment, not a consensus or a measure of player opinion. If you enjoy skill-based challenges and learning nuanced controls, the structure has a clear appeal; if you want fast combat or a story-led campaign, its focus is different.
