Phil Spencer said in February 2024 that Xbox supported physical games and that its strategy did not depend on everyone switching to digital. He did not promise that every future Xbox would include a disc drive. In August 2026, Xbox announced a digital-entitlement feature for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, but eligibility varies by title and the feature does not guarantee disc hardware in future consoles.
What Phil Spencer said about physical Xbox games
In a February 20, 2024, Game File interview with Stephen Totilo, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said, “We are supportive of physical media, but we don’t have a need to drive that disproportionate to customer demand.” GameSpot and Windows Central reported the remarks. Spencer also said Xbox shipped games physically and digitally, and that a majority of its customers were buying games digitally at that time. He gave no percentage, so “a majority” should not be read as a specific market share.
Spencer’s clearest reassurance was that Xbox’s strategy did not hinge on people moving to all-digital, and that getting rid of physical media was not a strategic objective. Those were statements about Xbox’s approach in 2024, not a binding promise about every future console. GameSpot’s report and Windows Central’s report cover the interview.
Why those comments did not guarantee a disc drive in every Xbox
Spencer discussed the cost of including disc drives and the declining number of manufacturers making them as factors in console decisions. He also described consoles as among the last consumer-electronics devices still shipping with a drive. That was his explanation of the business context in 2024, not a current independent assessment of the disc-drive supply chain.

Support for physical games and a commitment to a particular hardware configuration are different things. Spencer said Xbox would respond to customer demand; he did not say every future Xbox model would have an optical drive. Whether you can use a game disc therefore depends on the exact console model, not just on the broader policy statement. Tom’s Hardware’s August 2026 report also describes a specific Xbox outage in which entitlement checks affected disc access; it is an example of license-check behavior, not a general guarantee about offline play.
What Xbox’s August 2026 disc entitlement feature changes
On August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire announced “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.” The feature lets owners of supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games insert the disc in a console and claim a digital entitlement for that title. Xbox said the physical disc continues to work as before after the entitlement is claimed. Where a game supports them, digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming may also apply. Xbox said the feature was starting with thousands of titles and that more would be added over time. It also explicitly said some games would not be available at launch. Xbox Insiders could begin testing it on August 31, 2026; the announcement does not establish that every player had access immediately. It applies to eligible games and consoles, not to every disc or every Xbox model.

What this means if you own or want to buy Xbox discs
- To play a disc the ordinary way: use an Xbox model with an optical drive and keep the disc available. Check the exact model rather than assuming all versions of a console include one.
- To claim the announced digital entitlement: confirm that the specific Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc-based game is supported and that the feature is available on your console. Xbox’s launch announcement did not list every eligible title as available from day one.
- To judge future hardware: treat Spencer’s 2024 comments as support for physical media at that time, not as assurance that the next Xbox will have a drive.
