Pix the Cat is a reflex-driven arcade game about collecting eggs, guiding the ducklings that hatch from them, and routing their trailing line into target zones without crashing. Its appeal rests on quick score-chasing runs, distinct solo modes, and local competition—not a story campaign. If you enjoy compact arcade challenges or same-screen play with friends, it is worth a closer look.

What do you do in Pix the Cat?

You steer Pix around compact grids, collecting eggs that hatch into ducklings. The ducklings follow behind in a line, and you must lead that growing trail to target circles or safe zones while avoiding walls and obstacles. The challenge is planning a route that leaves room for the whole line to turn and move without colliding.

Pastagames described Arcade as a “hectic 2D level-based scoring game” built around “constant flow without any kind of scrolling” in its 2014 PlayStation Blog announcement. That description captures the game’s focus: keep moving, make quick decisions, and improve your score through repeated attempts.

What modes are available?

Arcade

Arcade is the score-focused mode, built around routing the duckling trail through levels while maintaining momentum. Its structure suits short runs and repeat attempts at improving a result.

Nostalgia

Steam lists 70 levels in Nostalgia mode. It gives solo players a level-based alternative to Arcade’s score-chasing loop.

Laboratory

Laboratory evaluates how many moves you use, adding a measure of route efficiency to the central navigation challenge. Steam lists it as one of the game’s modes.

Arena and local battle

Nintendo highlights Arena competition, while Steam lists a local battle mode with up to four PixBots. Both store descriptions point to same-system competition as a major part of the game’s appeal.

Can you play Pix the Cat with friends?

Yes. Nintendo’s US listing supports one to four players on a single system and describes sharing Joy-Con controllers for Arena mode. The Switch version also supports a Pro Controller, but Nintendo’s listing does not make an additional controller a requirement. Steam describes local battle for up to four PixBots.

Its simplicity and speed ensure everyone stays engaged and laughing.
  • Simple Rules, Wild Gameplay: Players take turns playing cards while chanting the game's title in order. Add in surprise action cards and it becomes a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud competition that's easy to learn but hard to stop playing.
  • Card Games for Families and Social Events: Whether it's a holiday gathering, birthday party, or casual get-together, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is a go-to choice. Players must stay alert and think quickly, making it both a fun and mentally stimulating activity for all ages.

For Switch, the practical appeal is being able to pass around shared Joy-Con controllers for a local session, with a Pro Controller as an optional supported alternative. Nintendo frames Arena as the competitive option and solo modes as a way to practise independently.

Is Pix the Cat worth playing?

Pix the Cat is a reasonable fit if you want a compact arcade game centered on reflexes, route planning, and improving scores. The modes give the core movement challenge different aims: Arcade emphasizes scoring, Nostalgia offers a listed 70-level progression, and Laboratory focuses on move count. Local Arena or battle play adds a clear reason to play with friends.

SmartGames Cats & Boxes – The Feline Fun Travel Puzzle Game, Ages 7+
  • BUILDS PLANNING & SEQUENTIAL THINKING — Cats & Boxes develops five STEM-connected cognitive skills with every puzzle: planning, logic, spatial insight, problem solving and concentration. Because you move the box pieces one at a time — and each must fit back on the board before the next move — you have to think several moves ahead and picture the whole sequence, the multi-step reasoning that underpins mathematics, coding and logical thinking. It's so much fun to play, you'll forget you're building real skills.
  • DESIGNED FOR AGES 7 TO ADULT — 60 CHALLENGES TO WIZARD LEVEL — Starter challenges solve in just a few moves; Wizard challenges make you cover a cat with a box only to move it again later, and genuinely test adults. Early challenges welcome a 7-year-old; the hardest push seasoned puzzlers. One game the whole family puzzles through together, each at their own level.
  • MOVE THE BOXES, HIDE THE CATS — These cats are dying to get into a box! Choose a challenge and place the cats and box pieces on the board as shown. Then move the box pieces around — one at a time, each fitting back onto the board before you move the next — until every cat is tucked snugly inside a cardboard box. Plan the order carefully, because you'll often need to cover one cat, then shift that box later. One solution every time.
  • THE PERFECT TRAVEL BRAIN GAME FOR EVERY GENERATION — Everything packs into the compact case with a lid — just close it and go. It's ideal for planes, road trips, restaurants and grandparents' houses, with no loose pieces to lose. The same puzzle that builds a child's planning gives adults a satisfying screen-free challenge and offers older adults an engaging mental workout that helps keep the mind sharp and active — a purr-fect, thoughtful gift across generations.
  • AWARD-WINNING BELGIAN DESIGN — Cats & Boxes comes from Raf Peeters, one of SmartGames' most celebrated designers, who set out to create something complex from very simple rules. From SmartGames, the worldwide leader in multi-level logic games, with 30+ years of award-winning design from Belgium, trusted by families, educators and puzzle lovers in 80+ countries. What do players and critics say?

Steam’s store snapshot recorded 85% positive ratings from 204 user reviews, labeled “Very Positive.” That is a changing user-review snapshot, not a critic score, and it may differ when you check the page. Metacritic’s results vary by platform, so there is no single platform-independent critic score to report here.
