- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for VideoSpin, Pinnacle, or another older Pinnacle product.
Reported messages include “pixietool-fra.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “failed to load,” and “The specified module could not be found.” A message that names another application does not necessarily mean that application is made by Microsoft.

The -fra suffix probably identifies a French-language resource variant, but Pinnacle documentation does not clearly establish that meaning. Do not substitute a similarly named -deu, -esp, or -ita file.
Fix 2: Repair the original Pinnacle installation
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely fix when VideoSpin fails immediately or the error points to the Pinnacle shared-files directory.
- Close the error message and any running Pinnacle programs.
- Find the original VideoSpin or Pinnacle installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- If the setup program offers Repair, select it.
- Allow setup to restore the complete application files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch VideoSpin or the Pinnacle program again.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected Pinnacle program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer again as administrator.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed a legitimate old application file, or the installation may have been damaged during a security cleanup.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.

- Review recent detections for the Pinnacle installation folder.

There is no need to obtain a random replacement DLL. Standalone DLL download sites files can be modified, mismatched with the application, built for the wrong architecture, or bundled with malware. They also frequently leave the underlying incomplete installation unresolved.
Use one of these safer sources instead:
- The original Pinnacle VideoSpin installer you already possess.
- Legitimate installation media supplied with the Pinnacle product.
- A trusted backup made from the same computer and installation.
- A legitimate vendor-provided installer or support archive, if one is available.
No current official Pinnacle download page for this individual DLL has been established. If the original installer cannot be found, replacing the obsolete application may be safer than placing an unverified DLL into a Windows directory.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is actually missing

The message “The specified module could not be found” can appear even when pixietool-fra.dll is present. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
- Browse to the Pinnacle installation folder named in the error.

Do not install Visual C++ or DirectX solely because the filename sounds like a runtime problem. Install a runtime only when the Pinnacle installer or the complete error message identifies that dependency.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 minutes
Public records disagree about this file’s architecture and metadata. Some records describe it inconsistently, while PE32 information generally points toward an older 32-bit application file. These third-party details are not a substitute for the file delivered by Pinnacle.
Use the DLL from the exact installer rather than choosing a file based on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not:
- Copy it to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Copy it to
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Rename another PixieTool language file.
- Replace it with a file from a different Pinnacle product build.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but the application’s own files still need to match one another. The expected location is the application’s Pinnacle directory, not a protected Windows system folder.
Fix 7: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE or ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing application files.
If you run a command such as:
regsvr32 "C:Program Files (x86)PinnacleShared FilesPixiepixietool-fra.dll"
and receive “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found,” that usually means the DLL is not designed to be registered. It does not mean you need another download.
Use the Pinnacle installer instead. Only register this file if official documentation for the exact Pinnacle product explicitly requires it.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is affected
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SFC and DISM normally repair protected Windows components. They will not usually recreate a third-party Pinnacle DLL, but they are reasonable if Windows has broader corruption, system tools are failing, or the file is being incorrectly reported as a system component.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the Pinnacle program again.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC repair procedure. If both commands complete successfully but VideoSpin still reports the DLL error, return to the Pinnacle repair or reinstall. That result means the Windows component store was not the main cause.
Repeatedly hunting through system files and rerunning SFC or DISM can make diagnosis slower when the missing file belongs to an old application. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain what the process changes. It is not a replacement for reinstalling VideoSpin, and it may not help if the original Pinnacle files were already absent from the selected restore point.
Fix 10: Update related drivers only for broader application failures

To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any capture-device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not remove a working device driver merely because pixietool-fra.dll is missing. Look for the original disc, a verified backup, or installation media kept with the computer. Avoid unofficial DLL repositories and unknown repackaged installers.
If the program is no longer needed, uninstall it from Settings > Apps and remove only leftover folders after confirming that no other Pinnacle product uses them. If another Pinnacle application still depends on Pixie5, reinstall that complete product instead.
