“ The program can’t start because pkmres.dll is missing from your computer.” Errors mentioning pkmres.dll usually point to an old Microsoft application rather than a missing Windows runtime file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- An old Microsoft program, Office installation, or Web Folders component stopped starting: repair or reinstall the parent application first.
- The error appeared after antivirus software removed a file: check Windows Security Protection history, but prefer reinstalling the original application over restoring an unknown DLL.
- The message appears only during startup after an old program was uninstalled: investigate stale startup entries or file associations instead of replacing the file.
- An Office XP, Office 2000, Visio 2002, or SharePoint Portal Server installation is asking for a CD: use matching original installation media and repair the affected component.
- The error says “The specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing.
- Several unrelated Windows files are also failing: run DISM and SFC after checking the application installation.
- A modern game or current application is requesting this file: identify the calling executable before doing anything else. Do not assume that the file belongs to that program.
pkmres.dll is an obsolete Microsoft DLL associated with SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and its Web Folders or client integration. SharePoint Portal Server was an enterprise collaboration, document-management, WebDAV, and search product, not a normal Windows component or modern runtime. Microsoft describes the product and its Web Folders integration in its historical SharePoint Portal Server overview.
It is commonly reported under:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Folderspkmres.dll
Public file inventories identify it as a 32-bit or x86 file, but Microsoft does not appear to publish a current authoritative standalone record for it. Reported versions, sizes, dates, and hashes can differ between old installations. Treat those details as clues, not as a universal specification.

1. Identify the program requesting pkmres.dll
Do not begin by downloading a replacement. First determine which executable is requesting the file.
Capture the complete error
Write down:
- The exact error text.
- The name of the program shown in the title bar.
- When the error appears, such as at startup, while opening a document, or during installation.
- Any path shown in the message.
- Whether the problem began after uninstalling, repairing, updating, or restoring software.
A reported Office XP installation problem requested the installation CD and then showed Error 1304 while writing:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Folderspkmres.dll
That situation points to a damaged or incomplete Office or Web Folders installation. It does not call for copying a DLL into System32.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Visio, or another old Microsoft application.
- Note the exact product name and installation location.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the suspected parent application.
If you find an old application that was recently changed, it is the leading suspect. If no installed program needs the file and the only symptom is a registry-cleaner warning, the reference may simply be stale.
Find the calling executable when the message is vague
If the error appears during startup or without identifying a program, use Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer or Process Monitor from Microsoft’s official Process Explorer download page.
For Process Explorer:
- Download it from Microsoft.
- Extract the archive.
- Run the version appropriate for the Windows installation.
- Reproduce the error.
- Look for the process that starts immediately before the message appears.
- Open that process’s properties and record its executable path.
The path is often more useful than the filename. An executable under an old Office, SharePoint, or Web Folders directory supports an application-repair diagnosis. An executable in an unexpected temporary or user-writable directory requires an authenticity check before you trust it.
2. Repair the parent Microsoft application
Repairing the parent installation restores its files, registration, configuration, and dependencies together.
Repair a classic desktop program
For an application listed in Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Find the affected Microsoft program.
- Right-click it.
- Select Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the wizard.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Start the original program again.
If the repair asks for a CD or source location, use installation media that matches the installed product and edition. Do not point the installer at a random DLL file.
If the repair completes but the error remains, run the same installer again and choose a full reinstall or removal followed by a fresh installation. Back up any documents and application settings first.
Repair an Office installation
For a current desktop Office installation:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair.
- If Quick Repair does not solve the problem, use Online Repair when available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Office application that originally displayed the error.
You can also reach repair options through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then selecting the Office entry and its additional options. These controls apply to current Office releases and may not be available for Office XP or Office 2000.
For those older releases, use the original installation CD or a preserved installation source belonging to your organization. The goal is to repair the complete Office and shared Web Folders installation, not to supply one loose file.
Repair SharePoint Portal Server 2001
SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is obsolete software. Its historical cumulative SP3 release required five files named SPSFull1.exe through SPSFull5.exe and was installed through Launch.exe. The old package is no longer readily available through Microsoft’s download center, so original product media or a preserved, verifiable organizational source may be necessary.

- Confirm that the installation media matches the installed product.
- Back up the server and its data.
- Test the repair on an isolated system where possible.
- Run the original setup program.
- Choose the repair or reinstall option.
- Apply the final service level available for that installation.
- Restart the relevant services and test Web Folders access.
Do not obtain individual SPSFull files or pkmres.dll from an unknown download source.
Check whether the repair worked
A successful repair should do more than make the error message disappear. Confirm that:
- The original program opens normally.
- The operation that previously failed works again.
- The file is restored under the application’s own directory.
- No new missing-DLL messages appear.
- The application’s version and configuration remain appropriate for the old environment.
If the program starts only after manually copying a DLL, the installation is still incomplete.
3. Check Windows Security Protection history
Security software may have quarantined a legacy DLL because of its age, behavior, location, or reputation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that names
pkmres.dll. - Record the detected path and reason.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can expose the device. Restore it only if all of the following are trustworthy:
- The file came from matching Microsoft installation media.
- Its original path belongs to the expected application.
- The parent program is known and still required.
- The file’s signature and hash have been checked.
- You have ruled out a modified or substituted copy.
In most cases, reinstalling or repairing the parent application is safer than restoring a quarantined standalone file. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after a legitimate repair, stop and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.

4. Verify a suspicious copy before using it
A file named pkmres.dll is not automatically genuine. Check its location and metadata.
The expected historical location is commonly:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Folderspkmres.dll
A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary directory, or an unrelated program folder should not be treated as authentic merely because the filename matches.
Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck can display file version information, hashes, and certificate-chain details. After downloading it from Microsoft:
- Extract the tool.
- Open Command Prompt in its folder.
- Run Sigcheck against the suspected file, for example:
text
sigcheck64.exe -a -h -i "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Folderspkmres.dll"
- Review the reported path, version, hashes, and signature information.
Metadata from public file inventories may mention a version such as 10.145.3722.0 and a size of 671,744 bytes, but those values are not universal. Older installations can contain different builds. Use the parent product’s installation media as the authority for replacement.
5. Do not copy pkmres.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Generic DLL advice often says to copy a missing file into both Windows system directories. That is not appropriate here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchespkmres.dll is associated with legacy SharePoint and Web Folders software. It is not normally a Windows component stored in System32 or SysWOW64. Copying it there can:
- Put an old application file in a system search location.
- Create an architecture mismatch.
- Leave the application’s registry and dependencies damaged.
- Hide the real installation problem.
- Make later troubleshooting less clear.
A 32-bit application may load a 32-bit DLL from its own installation directories or shared application directories. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many 32-bit desktop applications, but that does not make every old 32-bit DLL interchangeable with a system file.
The correct location is determined by the parent installer. Let that installer restore the file.
6. Do not use regsvr32 just because the file ends in .dll
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point documented by Microsoft.

A resource or icon DLL such as pkmres.dll normally has no reason to be registered manually. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 pkmres.dll
can produce another error without repairing the original application.
Use regsvr32 only when the software’s official installation instructions specifically require it and the DLL is documented as self-registering. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the parent application.
7. Resolve architecture and dependency problems
The file is publicly identified as Win32 or x86. That matters when the calling program is 32-bit.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that pkmres.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it. Microsoft explains this distinction in its DLL troubleshooting guidance.
Use this order:
- Confirm the calling executable’s path.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether
pkmres.dllis present in the parent application’s expected directory. - Repair the complete application.
- Avoid guessing at Visual C++ packages or copying runtime DLLs from another computer.
- If the error persists, inspect the application’s dependency chain with a trusted diagnostic tool or contact the application administrator.
Do not assume that installing DirectX, .NET, a modern Visual C++ redistributable, or a driver will restore this file. There is no evidence that pkmres.dll belongs to those packages.
8. Repair broader Windows component corruption
Use SFC and DISM when Windows itself has several corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in tools, servicing failures, or multiple system files failing. These commands are not the primary fix for a missing SharePoint DLL that is outside the Windows component store.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

- Restart Windows.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected program.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, repeat the process only after reviewing the DISM result and Windows servicing health. Do not expect SFC to recreate a legacy SharePoint file that was never part of the Windows component store.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows versions and rerunning SFC/DISM is becoming impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is not required when repairing the original SharePoint or Office installation is possible.

Drivers are not a primary cause of pkmres.dll errors. Use Device Manager only if the calling program depends on a specific device and the failure began after a device, chipset, storage, or display change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the computer or device manufacturer.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, consider Roll Back Driver.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Do not install a driver merely because a generic DLL page recommends it. The file is not identified as a driver component.
When manually checking many hardware vendors and driver versions is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation is performed by the full version, and driver work remains unnecessary unless your diagnostic evidence connects the failure to hardware.
10. Handle stale registry and icon references
Older registry-cleaner reports show pkmres.dll used as an icon source for Web Folders file types. If the original software has been removed and Windows is not trying to launch an installed application, the reference may be harmless.
If the only symptom is a registry-cleaner warning:
- Confirm that the related SharePoint, Office, or Web Folders software is no longer needed.
- Uninstall the obsolete parent application through Apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the warning returns.
- Leave the reference alone if it causes no functional problem.
Avoid deleting registry entries manually unless you have a verified backup and know exactly which application owns them. Do not restore the DLL solely to provide an icon for an uninstalled program.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error appears at every boot, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler for entries belonging to the removed application. Disable or remove only entries you can positively identify.
11. Use System Restore only as a fallback
System Restore can reverse a recent application installation, repair, or removal without affecting personal files. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the correct Microsoft product.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the
pkmres.dllproblem began. - Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore process.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
If the problem began long ago or the parent application is already obsolete, restoring the correct installation media is usually more reliable.
When to stop repairing
Stop attempting repairs when:
- The parent product is no longer required.
- The software is unsupported and cannot be isolated safely.
- The only remaining symptom is a stale icon or registry reference.
- The installer source cannot be verified.
- The file repeatedly appears in an unexpected directory.
- The application cannot run correctly on the current Windows environment even after a complete repair.
For an essential legacy deployment, identify the calling executable, document the required product and architecture, and move the software to an isolated environment that your organization can maintain. For nonessential software, migrate the needed data and retire the old installation.

FAQ
Is pkmres.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and related legacy Web Folders integration. It is not normally a Windows 10 or Windows 11 component stored in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is pkmres.dll malware?
The filename alone does not answer that. A legitimate copy should come from the relevant Microsoft installation and appear in an expected application directory. Check its path, metadata, signature, and hash before trusting it.
Can I download pkmres.dll separately?
Do not use random DLL download sites. A downloaded file can contain malware, belong to the wrong build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the application’s installation and dependencies are also damaged. Repair or reinstall the parent Microsoft application from matching original media.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first response. No evidence identifies pkmres.dll as part of those runtimes. First determine which application is requesting it and repair that application.
Why does the error say the module could not be found when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of pkmres.dll. Reinstall the complete parent product and investigate the dependency chain rather than copying another DLL into a Windows folder.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. A DLL must provide DllRegisterServer for regsvr32 registration to apply. Repairing the parent installation is the appropriate fix for this legacy application file.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the calling program, then repair or reinstall its original SharePoint, Office, Visio, or Web Folders component using matching Microsoft media. If no installed program needs the file, remove or ignore the stale reference instead of restoring it.
