Before changing Windows, confirm what is actually failing:
- Program: Does the error appear when opening Ulead DVD MovieFactory, rather than a newer application or game?
- Timing: Did it begin after reinstalling MovieFactory, removing antivirus detections, cleaning an old disk, migrating to a new PC, or restoring an older backup?
- Windows type: Is Windows 11 or Windows 10 64-bit? That does not prove MovieFactory or
u32zlib.dllis 64-bit. The file’s architecture has not been publicly verified. - Exact message: Record the complete wording. Common Windows loader messages include “
u32zlib.dllwas not found,” “cannot findu32zlib.dll,” or “the file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.”
If the error appears in Ulead DVD MovieFactory, treat u32zlib.dll as an application file first. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying files into C:WindowsSystem32.
What is u32zlib.dll?
u32zlib.dll is reported as an application DLL associated with Ulead DVD MovieFactory. Its reported description or internal name is Image Editor.
Ulead Systems originally developed DVD MovieFactory, an older Windows DVD-authoring product later maintained under Corel branding. The reported association identifies u32zlib.dll with MovieFactory, but no authoritative public file manifest verifies a particular version, file size, hash, digital signature, or CPU architecture.

That distinction matters. The filename alone does not prove that every file with this name is genuine, compatible, or safe.
There is no verified evidence that u32zlib.dll is:
- A Windows system component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
- A graphics-driver file
- A DirectX or .NET component
- A file that belongs in
System32orSysWOW64
The normal location, if the file is genuine, is the MovieFactory installation directory selected by its installer.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the exact MovieFactory edition
This is the most reliable fix because the missing file belongs with the complete application, not as an independent Windows component.
Try Windows’ repair option first
Some desktop applications expose a Repair command. Microsoft notes that this option is not available for every program. To check:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find Ulead DVD MovieFactory or the Corel-branded MovieFactory entry.
- Select the three-dot menu, if present.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if Windows provides it.
- Restart Windows.
- Open MovieFactory again.
If MovieFactory starts normally, the application files were repaired. If the Repair button is missing or the error remains, continue with a complete reinstall.
Remove the existing installation cleanly
Use the edition already installed rather than mixing files from different MovieFactory releases.
- Save any project files and note where they are stored.
- Close MovieFactory and any related background process.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate MovieFactory and select Uninstall.
You can also use the older Control Panel route:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the MovieFactory entry.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the computer.
Corel’s documentation for MovieFactory 7 describes removing the program and leftover product data before reinstalling. Follow the cleanup instructions for your own edition when they are available. Do not delete unrelated Ulead or Corel folders merely because their names look old.
Reinstall from safe original media
Use the original installation disc, a legitimate installer supplied with the product, or trusted OEM recovery media. If the installer has a repair or custom-installation choice, allow it to install the complete MovieFactory package.

Avoid copying u32zlib.dll from another computer. Even if the filename matches, the file may belong to another edition, may be damaged, or may not match the executable that is loading it.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the MovieFactory installation folder.
- Confirm that the installer created its normal application files.
- Launch MovieFactory from its Start menu shortcut.
- Test the operation that previously produced the error.
If the program starts, the reinstall worked. If the same message returns immediately, check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling again.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
Security software may remove or quarantine an old application DLL. This is especially relevant after a disk cleanup, antivirus update, or fresh installation.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an event involving MovieFactory or
u32zlib.dll. - Open the detection to inspect its path and action.
Compare the reported path with the MovieFactory installation directory. A file removed from an expected MovieFactory folder is different from a file found in a temporary folder or an unrelated directory.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The file came from verified original MovieFactory installation media.
- The detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- The application edition and installation path are known.
- You have checked the file with current security software.
Microsoft warns that restoring an unsafe file can expose the computer again. If the detection is uncertain, do not restore it. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall MovieFactory from clean, legitimate media instead.
After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and test MovieFactory. If Defender immediately quarantines it again, stop restoring it and investigate the detection or use a clean installer.
Fix 3: Confirm that the correct edition is installed
MovieFactory existed in multiple editions. A missing file can result from combining remnants of one release with an executable from another.

Check the edition in these places:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Read the complete product name.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features if the Settings entry is incomplete.
- Right-click the MovieFactory shortcut and choose Properties.
- Inspect the Target path and the Details tab where available.
- Check the label on the original disc, download receipt, OEM recovery media, or product documentation.
Do not copy u32zlib.dll from MovieFactory 2, 4, 5, 6, or 7 into another release. A matching filename does not establish binary compatibility.
The cleanest approach is to uninstall the incomplete installation, restart Windows, and install one complete matching package. If the original edition cannot be identified, preserve your project files before trying multiple installers.
Fix 4: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine solution
regsvr32 registers certain self-registering DLLs and ActiveX controls. Microsoft explains that a DLL must expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer for this operation to work.
A normal private application support DLL may not support registration. Running this command:

can produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found, or that the module is not compatible with the version of Windows.
That result does not mean Windows needs another copy of the file. It usually means registration is not part of this DLL’s design.

Only use regsvr32 when the MovieFactory installer or an authoritative vendor instruction specifically requires it. Otherwise, repair the complete application instead. Registering a file from an unknown source can create additional problems and does not fix a missing dependency or mismatched MovieFactory build.
Fix 5: Treat Visual C++ as a dependency check, not the first fix
The .dll extension does not mean that u32zlib.dll is part of Visual C++. Microsoft’s current redistributable packages use names including VC_redist.x86.exe, VC_redist.x64.exe, and VC_redist.arm64.exe.

It will not normally recreate an absent MovieFactory DLL.
If you have evidence of a runtime problem:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Note the installed architectures and years.
- Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ download documentation to obtain the required package.
- Install the architecture required by the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MovieFactory.
A 32-bit application commonly requires the x86 redistributable even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not infer the architecture of u32zlib.dll from that rule. Its architecture remains unverified until an authentic copy is inspected.
If MovieFactory still reports that u32zlib.dll is missing, return to the application reinstall. Do not keep installing unrelated runtime packages.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair Windows component files. They do not normally restore third-party files installed by Ulead DVD MovieFactory.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test MovieFactory.
Microsoft provides the relevant System File Checker and DISM guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, that confirms Windows had system-file problems, not that it restored u32zlib.dll. Reinstall MovieFactory afterward if its DLL is still absent.

Fix 7: Test compatibility settings on Windows 10 or 11
An old MovieFactory installation can fail even when all of its files are present. Compatibility settings may help the program launch, but they cannot recreate a missing DLL.
- Locate the MovieFactory executable or shortcut.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version offered by Windows.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the application requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch MovieFactory.
If the program starts, the issue may involve legacy permissions or compatibility behavior. If the same u32zlib.dll message appears, compatibility mode did not repair the installation.

You can also test with a clean local administrator account:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch MovieFactory.
If it works only in the new account, the original Windows profile or its permissions may be damaged. If it fails in both accounts, focus on the MovieFactory installation and its compatibility with the current Windows release.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the symptom points to graphics or media hardware
u32zlib.dll is not verified as a graphics-driver file. Device Manager will not replace it. Driver work is appropriate when MovieFactory also shows display corruption, capture-device failures, crashes during video preview, or missing hardware.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any capture-device category.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status message and Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only with a compatible driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall a working display or capture driver merely because MovieFactory reports a missing application DLL.
Manually identifying old hardware drivers can involve checking many device models and architecture requirements. Fix 9: Investigate installer failures
If the original installer will not remove or reinstall MovieFactory:

- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
- Copy the installer to a local folder.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Temporarily close unrelated setup programs.
- Try Control Panel > Programs and Features if Settings cannot uninstall the program.
- Restart again after removal.
Microsoft provides a Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for blocked installation and removal tasks.
Do not manually delete every folder or registry entry associated with MovieFactory unless the product’s own removal instructions tell you exactly what to remove. Incorrect cleanup can make a later reinstall harder.
Fix 10: Use recovery tools only after identifying a recent change
If MovieFactory worked until a particular update, cleanup operation, or software installation, System Restore may help.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore only if the restore point is suitable.
- Restart Windows and test MovieFactory.
Microsoft explains the available recovery options in Windows. System Restore does not guarantee recovery of a particular application file and should not be used without a suitable restore point.

If all repairs fail, identify the executable that raises the message:
- Read the title bar and complete error text.
- Open the MovieFactory shortcut’s Properties.
- Record the executable path.
- Open Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the failed launch.
- Note the faulting application and module names.
A dependency-analysis utility can help identify a missing supporting component, but use it for diagnosis only. Do not replace files based on similar names.

A “bad image” message may indicate corruption or a mismatched build rather than simple absence. In that case, reinstall the complete matching MovieFactory package instead of copying a replacement DLL.

Is the file malware?
The filename alone proves nothing. Check its location, provenance, digital signature where available, and any Windows Security detection. A file from verified original installation media is more trustworthy than a file copied from an unknown download.
What if I no longer have the installer?
Preserve your MovieFactory projects and search your original discs, OEM recovery media, archived legitimate installers, and product records. If no trustworthy installer exists, the obsolete application may not be reliably restorable on the current Windows version. A supported replacement may be safer than using an unverified DLL.
What is the final fix?
